If that is the new City that is coming, I am sure it would be a tough time for the competition esp. for the SX4, unless MUL comes out with a diesel version of SX-4.

I think you mentioning about the June Autocar India Edition. The red pic?
Other than diesel SX4 they need to upgrade the interiors IMO.

Yes, the red pic on the cover.

Well, it might be good to upgrade the interiors, but IMO not really a necessity from sales point of view. For sales, the magic word in India is 'diesel'. :-)

Mid-size car market clocking negative growth

Tata Indigo sold 17,539 units to retain top spot

Suzuki Dzire clocked 15,766 units during the April-June quarter

The only other entry-level mid segment car that gained ground in the first quarter was Hyundai Accent with a 129% jump in sales, thanks to the new CNG variant and a lower benchmark last year.

Honda city - 11% at 9795

Pulsar, thanks a ton for your file. Have you combined Lancer and Cedia into one category?. I am asking this since the above ET article mentions Cedia sales for 3 months as 627 separately.

The Q1 figure as per the spreadsheet is adding upto 1115 cars. Even if i add the lance & cedia figures in TOI, it comes to only 737. Does it mean the spreadsheet includes the Amby as well in the Mitsu figures??

I think the TOI shows 3 months sales( Apr-Jun) while the spreadsheet shows Jan-Jun.
Anyway, let us wait for Pulsar to enlighten us.

No way, Amby is an entirely different segment like Alto & 800, which no one will consider in this industry.

People who use Amby are the real Influential people . You may check the preferences of elite in Bihar ministers want Ambassadors, not SUVs

Unfortunate that in India, ministers are considered elite and the real influential people, and not servants of the people. Have you considered that Amby still sells with the Govt. but not for the first tier politicians. I think Amby has been downgraded to 2nd rank pols. and bureaucrats.

Sales of cars, SUVs crash

MUMBAI: For the first time since 2005, passenger vehicle sales, including cars and utility vehicles, are registering an absolute decline. Although the rate of growth has been falling since April 2008, its only in July that sales were 3% less than the previous comparable period.

Sales grew by a robust 19.8% in April, fell to 14.5% in May and in June it was a single-digit growth rate at 6%. Small cars, which account for more than 65% of the passenger car industry, are the main culprit, and what is worse is that the outlook for August-September looks bleak.

“The going really looks tough. In August 2007, passenger vehicle sales stood at 1.24 lakh and after recording a negative growth rate in July, it is unlikely that sales will cross the August sales figure of last year,” said an official from a Mumbai-based car manufacturer. July sales were 1.11 lakh. High interest rates, non-availability of finance, higher fuel prices and the recent increase in car prices have triggered the current slowdown in the industry.

Analysts say that car manufacturers are offering discounts and incentives and launching new models in a bid to pep up the slowing market “Shelf life of new launches have been reducing over the last few years. It doesn’t last beyond a year,” said a car manufacturer. Recently launched vehicles like the Chevrolet Spark, Renault Logan, Suzuki SX4 and the Honda Civic are all available off the shelf, sources said. Last year, when the mid-size car market saw the launch of Logan and SX4, volumes initially surged.

Though small cars account for the slowdown in July, sales are slowing across the board. Auto analysts say the recent increase in excise duty on bigger cars plus the rise in fuel prices have hit car sales as consumers are looking at small cars or postponing purchases. Even the premium-car segment, considered price inelastic, is also witnessing a slowdown. Companies are being forced to shut down lines of production or operate below capacity.

Vendors say that car companies are forcing them to cut prices, bringing their already wafer-thin margins under pressure. The slowdown has also led to inventory piling up at the dealer end. Auto industry sources say car manufacturers are concerned about the gloomy scenario, which may not improve even during the October-November festival season.

Official data upto July 2008 car sales is now posted here:

Sales have now declined for 2nd consecutive month.
Even on year on year (yoy) basis, sales down 1.4%. Cars were already down, but now the slowdown in BPO has affected MUVs also.
You can only flog a flop product through price cuts and that too temporarily: Palio is now down to ~400. Another (and not the last) round of price cuts has enabled GM to clear some old Spark stock (production of 2686 in 7/08 and sales of 3866). Fiat though has enough inventory so bargains can be had. So is the case with Fabia, where production exceeded sales by 379 in 7/08. Indica is selling a lot less now, with competition from Swift Diesel. Apparently around 3500 excess Indicas/Indigo Cs produced in 7/08. Hyundai has experienced domestic decline, but higher exports have softened the blow.
Fiesta Sports added some sales in 6/08, but back to decline in 7/08. Maruti is now the clear leader in mid size. Logan is posting record lows nearly every month. City is again back up. Tata is clearing old Indigo stock (underproduction of 3000 in 7/08).
Typical of GM to not match production with demand (underproduction for Spark in 7/08 and clearance sale; overproduction for Aveo and Optra. Can we expect some `celebration offer’ soon).
Civic now in its 13th straight month of yoy decline. Sales at their lowest since launch. 1 Elantra of 2006 vintage sold in 7/08!. Only 74 Corolla’s produced in 7/08, and 71 sold. A lot (+400) of Octavias at dealers (see many more Octavia ads now with 50% insurance).
Skoda sold 118 Laura in 7/08 compared with 19 in 6/08. Going by past experience, could be dealer stuffing. Accord back to reasonable levels, but still creaming all.
Scorpio is declining sharply, and so is Safari, Sumo, and Tavera (lesser declines). Innova is also down.
Some minor reclassification for Tata (Safari, Sumo, Winger) in 7/08 (reason for 0 in some places for 7/08).

Thanks Vasudeva!
Interesting to see 3-series overtaking C-class (new huh) and E-Class overtaking 5-series in numbers. In fact 5 series numbers are almost 50% down despite model revision :(
