Toyota is recalling 466k cars/ minivans across globe for different issues.
Around 16k 2013 Lexus GS sedans are being recalled doe faulty brakes. Basically, there is a fautly switch on the braking systems of these cars, which could cause the system to activate on its own when the vehicle is in motion, thereby causing unexpected deceleration of the vehicle.
Another 450k 2004-2011 Sienna minivans sold in cold weather states that use road salt to melt snow & ice, are being recalled. The fautly part in this case is the cable holding the spare tyre under the vehicle, which can corrode due to rock salt, possibly causing the spare tyre to fall off.

Ford is recalling more than 1.3 million vehicles for steering wheel problem, fire risk & unintended acceleration.

Around 1.1 million 2011-2013 Explorer & 2008-2011 Escape and Mercury Mariner SUVs have power steering that can be disabled while driving.

As per the company:
Quote:
The electric power steering in Explorer SUVs system can receive "intermittent" signals due to bad cables and misaligned connectors. If that happens, the system automatically disables the power steering and the driver will be alerted with a chime and a dashboard message - and manual steering.

On the Escape and Mariner models, a "poor signal to noise ratio" on the steering wheel torque sensor can disable the power steering
Additionally, 183,425 2010-2014 Ford Taurus has license plate lamp terminals that can corrode & cause a short, smoke & a small fire.

Finally, Ford is recalling more than 82,000 accessory all-weather floormats originally sold for 2006-2011 Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr & Lincoln MKZ models that can trap the accelerator pedal if they are installed incorrectly. This can lead to unintended acceleration of the vehicle.

Yet another recall announced by GM - this time 474000 vehicles. Totals to 20 million freaking vehicles this year!!! Is the company management wondering why they are even in business still? Makes me wonder.

Source link: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/b...w/41213344.cms

Quote:
FRANKFURT: Volkswagen's premium brand Audi will recall 70,000 cars world wide because of a potential fault with the brake booster, a spokesman for the company said on Friday.

Audi's A4, A5, A6, A7 and Q7 models equipped with the three litre diesel engine and which were built between March and December 2012 are being recalled, the company said.

The brakes will still function but the brake enhancing function from the booster may fail because of a potential leak in a membrane, Audi said.

Mercedes-Benz to Recall 2015 C-Class Sedan

2015 C-Class Sedan Recall - US

Quote:
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which has received critical acclaim from across the globe, might be in trouble. Well, kind of, at least in the United States. International reports claim that the Stuttgart-based luxury car maker is recalling 10,500 units of the C-Class sedan in the US because the steering wheels - don't do what they are meant to do, i.e. turn.

Mercedes says it is a production fault with the steering coupling interlock. The company accepts the issue was first reported on a pair of European models, when the interlock was found to be not 'in the correct locked position'.

That was for the European models; Merc doesn't believe the US models suffer the same affliction, but will recall the 10,500 units as a measure of 'caution'. The company is said to have notified the concerned authorities and is in the process of notifying customers.
Guys from the US can confirm is this is true.

One think that always baffles, is the horrible naming conventions in the auto industry.
How can they recall a car that is to be launched in the future - 2015 ?
Or am I missing some news ?

Anyways, they seem to have predicted the future, that the steering will not do what it should do in 2015. So lets fix it. Instills good faith in the customer that a Merc can never go bad.

2015 refers to the Model Year (MY 2015 and not the calendar year) which was sold during this year after the second quarter. Must be the latest iteration of the C Class sold in the US.

Hmmm, understood your point.
Model Year - Should be equal to Calendar Year. Isn't it ?
If they are doing Quarter based year calculation - It should be as per financial year then.
So if they launched this model in 2014 4th quarter, I would (reluctantly) accept it as a 2015 model. But anytime before that, it is should be called a 2014 model.

But still makes nonsense for auto companies to put such nomenclature.

Model year can be past, not future. Simple.

I own a Chevy Beat 2011 Model, or a 2014 Model.
You own a VW Polo 2011 Model (or whenever the model was launched).
But you cannot own a Polo 2015 Model ? Right

Anyways, before the mods slap us for discussing OT stuff, let me just sneak out of this forum.

Model year can be past, not future. Simple.
Manufacturing year is the same as calender year.
When they refer to a 2015 merc, it does not imply a 2015 manufactured merc. On the other hand it refers to the model the car manufacturer has launched in year 2014(usually around the middle of the year) called the 2015 model. Unlike the Indian market wherein yearly updates/face-lifts seldom happen, in the American and European market, yearly updates are brought out(as part of planned obsolescence). The model year is to distinguish each model which is different from the previous one and also to make the consumer aware of how outdated/updated car he is using. Complete revamps to the design or mechanicals dont usually happen yearly, but rather cosmetic updates and addition of features.

Manufacturers dont follow calender year as model year, this is the practice. The 2015 models(Model Year) would be available in the market now.

Hope things are clear now.

9,000 Units of Nissan Micra & Sunny to be Recalled in India

Quote:
Japanese auto major Nissan is recalling 9,000 units of its compact car Micra and mid-sized sedan Sunny in India to replace defective airbags as part of a global recall.

The recall will cover cars manufactured between 2008 to 2012 that use safety airbags made by its supplier Takata.

"Nissan plans to begin notifying customers soon. Nissan dealers will replace the driver Airbag inflator with a correctly manufactured part at no cost to the customers for parts or labour," a Nissan India spokesperson said.

The global recall of 2,60,000 units by the Japanese auto major affects models, including Note, March/Micra, Sunny/Almera/Versa, Patrol and Cube. These are affected by a driver airbag concern that Takata reported to Nissan, the company said.

Honda to Recall 2338 Cars in India

Quote:
Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) today announced that it would carry out preventive replacement of Driver Side Air Bag Inflator on a total of 2338 cars manufactured between September 2011 to July 2014.

The affected cars include 1040 units of the Honda Brio, 1235 units of the Honda Amaze and 63 units of the Honda CR-V. This exercise is part of Honda's global recall regarding a possible incorrect assembly of the Baffle Plate in the Inflator.

HCIL is carrying out the part replacement as part of a global exercise but there has been no reporting of any incident related to this part in India. In case of certain vehicles, due to incorrect assembly of Baffle Plate, the pressure within the Inflator may rise excessively when the Driver Side Airbag deploys in an accident or other situation, causing damage to the container.

The replacement would be carried out free of cost at HCIL dealerships across India, and the owners will be contacted individually. The customers can also check whether their car will be covered under this campaign by submitting their 17 character alpha-numeric Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the special microsite which has been created on the company's website.
