Re: Formula1 - PreSeason Discussion Thread 2011

Ferrari's KERS unit is located INSIDE the fuel tank.
Very innovative.

Re: Formula1 - PreSeason Discussion Thread 2011

^^ That was a misinterpretation by some press sources I guess. The KERS as I understand is located right above the fuel tank!

Any faults in the KERS unit would mean danger from leaked curren and that will be worst disaster ever if its going to be placed inside a fuel tank.

Formula 1

Quote:

Q: As far as consumption is concerned, what has been done?
Luca Marmorini: The consumption remains one of the most important aspects regarding the performance. This year we also have to consider that the KERS is positioned inside the fuel tank. If you don’t want to create a much longer and much wider car, keeping the consumption under control is one of the most important issues during the development in winter. Here it is an advantage that Ferrari has such a long-serving partner like Shell in the area of fuels.

Ferrari F150 « Scarbsf1's Blog

Quote:
The KERS battery pack is mounted inside the monocoque under the fuel tank (not within the actual tank and petrol!). As the batteries are denser than fuel this keeps a low CofG, already most teams have several centimeters of space under the fuel taken up by blocks of ballast, rising the fuel tank by an equal amount. One area Ferrari were clear that they have improved KERS on this year is the way the MGU charges when the car brakes. Marmorini stated this was improving the “dragging” of the system.

Here's what Alonso had to say about the timings..

Quote:
I remember that last year at the last test in Barcelona we were sixth fastest with Sauber and Force India ahead of us. At Sakhir we lapped them. I think that this question mark will remain right up to the first race.

McLaren to feature innovative exhaust similar to Renault | Formula 1 | Formula 1 news, live F1 | ESPN F1

Quote:
With the innovative new Renault exhaust system the talk of the paddock in Valencia on Wednesday, it has emerged that McLaren's 2011 challenger also features a novel exhaust system.

The Lotus Renault R31 hit the circuit on Tuesday with Vitaly Petrov behind the wheel, the car's exhaust exiting at the bottom of the sidepod area. And, according to Auto Motor und Sport, the new McLaren has a similar design. "The MP4-26 apparently has the same trick," said the German report.

The new system is aimed at generating more downforce through the flow of air to the now mandatory single diffuser.

"I'm not going to talk too much about it, I will let our competitors find out by themselves," Renault boss Eric Boullier told ESPNF1. "Yes, we have decided to go a little bit brave in this design and this area to make the car a bit different.

"If you are too conservative you will stay at the back of the queue and we do not want to spend our time copying the others. If you want to be at the front you have to be creative and you also need to bring this creativeness in the team spirit."

And it seems likely that other teams may follow suit, including Mercedes. "Renault's thinking is in the right direction," said team boss Ross Brawn. "We are working on a similar solution."

The McLaren MP4-26 will launch in Berlin on Friday.

Re: Formula1 - PreSeason Discussion Thread 2011

Surprisingly, Force India drivers are not doing too bad, considering it is last year's car, but with Pirelli instead of Bridgestone tyres. FI drivers had reported problems with tyres in quite a few races in 2010. Hopefully the Pirelli tyres will suit them better.

Sutil will get the car today. FI are using last year's car which should normally be faster than the current cars due to the F-ducts, double diffusers, lesser weight etc (although i suspect, FI must have altered the car to be close to this year's regulations. In case of Mclaren, they have modified their old car to simulate this year's regulations ) .
