Would appreciate further comparison of Vcross's abilities as well. It's the one which is well priced and that leaves one with a spare cash to invest in further upgrading it's abilities. How does it perform compared to old gen Fortuner, new gen Fort, Endeavour and Pajero Sport. How is it's performance with and without difflocks especially when compared to others. I'm shooting questions here, just bear with another one. How does new gen Fortuner perform in comparison to old gen Fortuner given that the new Fortuner doesnt have a full time AWD and are diff locks available for new one as well, front and rear. Thank you
Thanks for your post, appreciate your words. It will be too long a post if I start comparing these cars all together.

Let's focus on common things between all the vehicles you have named:

- Ladder on Frame construction
- Solid Axle in back, IFS in front
- Low Range Transfer Case / Proper 4WD
- Ample Power on tap; good reliability overall
- Comfortable for daily driving / Good FE overall

These points make these SUVs what they are. At the end of the day, it will remain at buyer's discretion what are their needs and attracts them most?

Buying decisions will be based on:

- Brand Pull (or Loyality) based on past experiences / hearsay
- Body Style: Station Wagon Vs Pickup Truck
- Usable Space: 5 Seats / 7 Seats and available boot space
- Utility: Daily Drive / Jack of all trades / Adventure usages / Social Status

Regarding your queries:

- No major differences between all three vehicles in question. All are reliable and performance is good enough whether it is on or off-road. Let's be honest, 99% of the buyers won't do what we do with these and will never be exposed to a lot of minute details we get into while using these vehicles. Each vehicle has it's own set of advantages and disadvantages and buyer will either 1) get used to what is on offer Or 2) will tweak the vehicle according to their needs. Price wise, I think Isuzu V Cross is the clear winner because for the price of a brand new Toyota or Ford or Mitsubishi, you can get a top end D Max and deck it up to the limit! If that's your thing, nothing even comes close to a D Max when you look at VFM preposition!

- New Fortuner Vs Old Fortuner: Old one is surely good with fulltime 4WD setup, centre diff lock etc; but that doesn't make the new one inferior in any given way. It's just smart marketing on Toyota's front. It's their way to differentiate between Fortuner and Prado platform. Remember even the old Fortuner didn't come with centre diff in start of its life cycle, it was only after backlash it faced due to stability issues on gravel roads when Toyota decided to put in what basically was a Prado 4wd setup in Fortuner for it's mid-life facelift. New Fortuner doesn't suffer from any stability related issues because Toyota has worked on its chassis and other construction elements; it is a fine package in it's current form. With new electronic gadgetry on offer, superbly tuned TC and A-Trac etc, it outperforms the old one in a few departments and if one wants to extract even more performance, full range of aftermarket products are available for new gen Fortuner as well including front and rear differential locks. But remember a lot of these modifications are expensive and there will be only a few who will actuially do justice to all that extra $$$ spent on vehicle. India, unfortunately, still is a market in infancy when it comes to four wheeling; posers rule the roost!

I hope that answers your set of questions...

Stumbled upon some old Fortuner posts on TBHP... lo and behold! Official to say that Atlantis has been doing what he does best since 2010 and has lived quite a social life all along!

Here is the post by rhandle in 2010, putting Atlantis through his paces.

rhandle's old post from 2010

Attaching 2 of the pics from the same post hereby... Brought a smile on my face today! Younger Gajraj!!!

Quick question - Have you faced any issues with cops regarding the off road bumper? I'm in a dilemma whether to go for it or not with the recent case regarding bull bars.

My personal recommendation, cops or no cops, is not to have add on bull bars or nudge guards.

I have seen some older Prados (J90) with nudge guards but not sure if they are add ons or stock.

re: My Pre-Worshipped Toyota Fortuner 3.0L 4x4 MT - 225,000 km crunched. EDIT: Sold!

Hi,
I just bought a pre owned fortuner and have been loving it. However, there is one issue. When at low rpm, there is a “tuck -tuck” sound that comes from the engine. Got it diagnosed to alternator pulley fault by the service centre. They say it has to be changed . I have been quoted a price of Rs 6k for the same. The sound is only heard at low rpm and not at high rpm. Some guidance please.
Thanks

re: My Pre-Worshipped Toyota Fortuner 3.0L 4x4 MT - 225,000 km crunched. EDIT: Sold!

Well, time for another update... an annual phenomena I guess.

A lot has happened in past year or so, Gajraj aka Atlantis has been munching miles although a bit slowly since I was in Mumbai for most of 2018.

Current odometer is slightly over 225,000 kms... here is an odo reading I had clicked during one of the recent OTRs.
My Pre-Worshipped Toyota Fortuner 3.0L 4x4 MT - 225,000 km crunched. EDIT: Sold!-img_20190303_131952.jpg

Let me start by reinstating the fact that Gajraj has been super-reliable and the mile munching has been business as usual for him. It just gives me immense pleasure to say this again and again. All the normal services have been taken care from Toyota and nothing seems out of place in the vehicle. The drive belt and all the pulleys accompanying the drive belt are the only regular wear-and-tear things that have been replaced in past year.

Another item that was replaced out of it's regular maintenance schedule was the brake booster. Quite a story, my OEM booster's inner diaphragm got busted during one of the trips in December, leaving me without brakes deep into the mountains. Once back in Delhi, I thought it was an excellent opportunity to get my brake booster upgraded to the better one that is on offer from Toyota. So, I got the booster upgraded, the same upgraded booster that our beloved Guderian and D-BHPian Karan561 had got in their Fortuners. Cost me some 12k... a fitting upgrade if you ask me. I do find the brake bite better with the new booster.

Other than this, I have got Gajraj a pair of Maxxis Bighorn M/T rubber on dark grey alloys of 2015 vintage Fortuner... Why M/Ts is a story for another day; in short, we are not happy with Yokohama G015 ATs that many of my friends are running in their SUVs because of random tire cuts and punctures. I have run these Maxxis earlier as well and I am aware of their advantages and disadvantages and decided to get them another shot... so! I think they suit my use case well although an AT tire with stronger sidewall would been absolutely ideal.

Apart from this, Gajraj has been doing what he does best. Let me share a few memories from past one year in a sort of photologue.

We also were a part of team marshalling during 2019 Royal Rajasthan Rally in Jaipur and Ultimate Desert Challenge in Bikaner. A friend, Ankit, participated in both events and brought home trophies in his respective SUV categories.

Maxxis Bighorns in fresh snow were very good, however gave me some jitters when driving over icy patches. However, nothing of that sort that I hadn't predicted, although all in all I would recommend all terrain tires in these conditions over MTs.

Nothing yet. More than bullbars, my nervousness has been high with recent NGT's ruling of not allowing diesel vehicles older than 10 years of age into NCR. Atlantis is in absolutely ship shape and came out with flying colors in a PUC test that I got done in Feb, however with our judiciary's arbitrary (and stupid if you ask me) decision to ban the vehicles not on their actual polluting status but based on their age, I don't know how the next year is going to be. I am still thinking over it whether to keep the vehicle or sell it (as most people in my circle are suggesting me). I honestly believe that there are plenty healthy life remaining in my car, but if the court is going to be hell bent on enforcing their decision on us, then there is very little that we can do. And it just makes me sad!

The sound is only heard at low rpm and not at high rpm. Some guidance please.

Hi Victor-whiskey, congratulations on your new purchase. I have generally found Toyota's diagnosis process to be very good and to the point, if they recommend you to replace the pulley, I think you should replace it. Enjoy your time in your Fortuner. Cheers.

Woah! Quite an update Ace.

It's great to see how Atlantis has been munching miles effortlessly even after being subjected to offroad trails since Day 1.

One question since you are in Delhi, do you have any upgrade plans when Atlantis turns 10? (or is it already past 10 year mark?) In that case which car would you consider as a replacement?

Thanks self_driven. Atlantis will turn 10 in Dec 2019, hence thinking on alternatives available at my disposal. Honestly I will not sell if I had a choice . Replacement of this vehicle will be very hard to decide, it is such a high benchmark, may be another Fortuner, or an new gen Endeavour, or a V Cross, or may be even a Gypsy. I have no clue, but will see what can I do.

Adding a few more pics that I think are worth sharing...

Kudos to you for using your Fortuner as it's supposed be man!

I sometimes envy you guys up north, so many different terrains at your disposal in a day's driving distance. It pains me to think of what you must be going through at this point of time. It's like putting down your own pet dog, just that this one is hale and hearty.

All the best in taking a decision.

I've been following this thread for the past one year, and have gone through it in its entirety, multiple times. You have a brilliant vehicle, and kudos to you for using it the way it's meant to be used! The YouTube videos of your clan (on moderator .anshuman's channel) taking on all types of terrain are droolworthy, to say the least.

It pains me to know that you'll have to let go of Gajraj so soon, especially when it's still in the pink of its health and has not even lived 1/2 of its life, but alas, that's exactly what the Govt. and the NGT want. I'm sure it'll be quite some time before the new vehicle you buy is able to occupy Gajraj's place in your heart.

Looking forward to further updates on the situation.

Regards,
boniver.

Thanks for sharing the updates. Atlantis would have served you for the entire lifetime if it weren't for the stupid NGT hoopla. I can understand what you are going through, Hope he finds a good home.

God, you drove a stake through my heart by bringing up that pet dog analogy!

Yes, it is sad to let go out of pure legal compulsion. I have been seeing a few members here going through this - its hell for sure!
