Any idea how to get Mobil 1 5W-30?
As per my post, clarified by Gansan 0W40 is perfect. You can get Idemitsu 0W30. Castrol Edge may also be available in 0W30.

IMHO you may safely use 10W-40 grade semi synthetic oil, as it is better than and exceeds the specifications of 20W-40 grade mineral oils.
Difference of opinion is solicited.

Mobil Delvac 1 is the most preferred one here.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

I was staring at my oil filter today and just realized it is recommended to change every 10K kms. But since I switched to synth, and plan to keep it for 20k kms, should I keep the oil filter for 20k? Can we change an oil filter at 10k without draining the oil? I doubt it but curious if anyone has any novel ideas.

@Ragul; Normally 20k is not recommended. But you may be a high mileage motorist. Change the filter when you change the oil. However, for your information the filter can be unscrewed, and a new one spun on, loss of oil is about 250ml.

Even if you use synth 20K is way too high. If you do a lot of highway driving, say , if 15K out of this 20K is on highways then its fine. But if your driving is in city bumper to bumper traffic i suggest changing at 10K kms, max at 15K, nothing beyond that for sure!!

I think the Gypsy service manual service interval has a gap of 20K after the 1st 3 free services at 1K, 5K, 10K and the 4th at 20k. Lemme check again ...

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

@Ragul; Often the car vendors fail to mention the time scale. I will say 12 months (15 max). Oil oxidises just sitting in the sump.

Yes even mahindra recommends 20k interval between oil changes with mineral oil. We know that this is not feasible with the driving condition present in our country.

You can experiment with 20k change interval . Your engine Will go for a toss. If you are sticking to mineral oil then recommended is 5k max sustainable till 7.5 . In case of synthetic 10k max sustainable till 15k.

Yes the time scale is also mentioned in the table.

Clearly my Engine performance improved around 18K when the oil was 8K kms old. It became more peppy and I was able to go zig-zag and get ahead of the traffic because my car became racy. I was in two minds whether to change the engine oil @20K because of this. so 5K is definitely too early to change even with semi-synth. I think I agree on the 5K for normal mineral oil because I felt the engine was "sufferring" after 4.5K kms on the 1st oil change.

The new fully synth oil did not appear to improve on the peppiness except on the noise slightly - engine is quieter but the Gypsy is not a loud car like a Mahindra diesel in any case. The racy and peppy feel only came back to what was @18K kms - some 1K kms after the 20k kms oil change - it seemed to go away when the oil was fresh.

Probably, the increased performance is because of the thin oil which had lost its viscosity over the period of 8K kms hence offering less resistance to movement translating into better peppiness. Well finally if the manufacturer says change interval as 20K then no issues. I just suggested based on personal experience after experimenting with different drain intervals of oils.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

My experience is that the engine seems to get run in, at some point in a hurry. So maybe yours got run in around the 18k point. Do not ask me why but I have found this fully done point comes on fast.
