Anybody who asks me whether they should buy an RD, i would advise them not to go. Over and above money, it takes a lot of passion, dedication, blood and sweat to get a bike running like the way it should be running.

Most people I see are looking to own just the fastest bike produced in India and just want it for the bragging rights. I would say save up and buy a more modern bike. Its sensible in the long run.

If you actually yearn for an RD you would not make this post and would just go and buy it. You cant argue with the heart.

There is not a MotorBike like the RD350 it's a dream machine. Like speedster said you'll need some dough to make sure she stays with you. But what the heck it's still a RD, go ahead and pick it up, run it by your mechanic get a verdict on the engine and so on.. But remember an RD is an RD!

you are so true on this. I wanted a bull, i got one even when i did not know how to ride a BIKE. Learn't riding on my bull.

So yes if want to buy it. . buy it. Do not think about it.

0verhyped bike . im an RD owner myself but todays quoted prices are just INSANE. ur better off with a latest edition gsxr600 or if u got bigger male organs a 1000 . more speed , more handling , more poser points and simple put simbly bleedy phaaast . and ironically even with the price of these sbk ull still spend less on them in the long run then a 1lac plus RD built by a supposed indian TUNER who is just another grease monkey.

The reason I say this is that I have a very old version of this bike which is undergoing its first rebuild in about 7 years now. The bike has always started on the 4th or 5th kick everytime I came back home (which is not very often) till we removed the engine late last year for the rebuild, has never left me stranded on long journeys (even when it misfired occassionally with the older CB points) and has never had a mechanical failure.

As for maintenance, I've done very little other than the regular oil top-ups and transmission fluid changes. Yes I've spent some money securing spares, but these have mostly been old bike parts bought at scrap rates - none of which have cost anything significant.

The engine is now being rebuilt at quite some cost, but I'm quite okay with that kind of money being spent after nearly 7-8 years. Rebuilds are costly basically because the spares arent available (they are available out here in the middle east at reasonable prices as most engine bits are swappable with the Banshee's) and there are very few people who know the bike well enough to work on it.

However, you should be looking at an RD only if you were looking for one in the first place. If you just want a fast motorcycle, you can find quite a few used imports of later dates at reasonable prices.

I second that. I have been using one for 7 months now ( I am 3rd owner ) and I haven't spent a penny on anything other than petrol.

its tough to find a hassle free RD. If it is hassle free then the cost will be nearing a lac. Its a general myth that RD is like maintaining a car. Not true at all.

Saw sm1 write that take it to ur mechanic. Just an advice, there are a handful of people who are capable of getting an RD to all the right settings etc etc. General mechanics are known to give gyan as if they are pros & then try to figure out what to do with the bike once the owner is convinced & has given the bike.
My Blue Rd can be ridden on a daily basis, not a fact that it has to be your weekend bike or somethin.

More difficult than finding a good RD is finding a good n honest mechanic to work on this machine. Back when I was in college (early 90s), my very first bike was an RD 350 and what a bike it was, a year down the line and half a dozen mechanics later I sold it and bought myself an jap engine Bajaj RTZ, which goes for a service once a yr, can be fixed by a roadside mechanic and is reliable as hell....ha ha ha and most important doesn't need a battery to start. I remember the days when I was left stranded due to dead battery, stolen battery, roaming the Gujri for spare parts (that still happens I'm sure) But trust me the sound of a well tuned RD is like music to the ears, and cannot be mistaken for ANY other bike.
A passion for the die-hard RD fan, not so for the daily urban commuter.......I assure you.

Things have changed alot buddy. Specially in your city. Not only does ur city have a good mechanic, but has the specialists. Daily Commuting, no stalling issues, perfectly timed, CDI's etc etc, enough to make an old RD rider scared of the full potential that it churns out.
