Dealer is quoting me 110806 for insurance (1 yr comp. + 3 yr third party). Wondering how can I get a better deal.
I took quotation from policybazaar(Kotak insurance) for insurance and it was half of the price that dealer quoted, it is cheaper than Acko as well. Dealer will certainly try to match when you share the quotation with them.

Black looks smashing! Your car just needs a bigger set of rims to complement the overall aesthetics is what I personally feel

I didn't go with showroom insurance. I took insurance from United India insurance. Find attached breakup.

So I look to your advice, have you been using Thar for your city runs and more importantly if your partner drives the Thar how comfortable it is for them or their views regarding it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers !
I have a Thar Diesel AT and it is very practical inside the city if using it as a second car. There will be occasions when you will need to seat 4-5 people and you need to have a second vehicle that can do this.

I use it as my daily driver, commute to office in it, go shopping in it and go to concerts etc. in it. Very short people may find climbing in and out difficult, but as a tall family, we have no problems at all. My 73 year old mom is able to get in fairly easily as she is tall!

My wife likes to drive the Thar off and on when her driver is not around, especially Sundays. In fact, she finds it easier to drive and park in the city than her own Camry Hybrid, and prefers the Thar if she is driving herself.

The traffic kind of parts and other people don't play too many games on the road with the Thar. Many an occasion, auto would stop and make way for the Thar, while this never happens when driving the other cars.

So, now that you already have a Harrier in the garage for occasions where the entire family travels, the Thar is a very practical second car. Only thing I would think if I were in your shoes would be, if you have large SUV already, is it not better to get a fast petrol sedan as a second car, such as the Virtus DSG? The pleasure of driving a petrol sedan with good power on that smooth highway on your long distance trips is something else, which a heavy SUV can never replicate.

Thank you so much for your reply. It gives me the insight I was looking for.

There are two problems with it. First, we really aren’t looking for a vehicle more than 4 m in length and second, I have adapted myself to the SUV life Harrier has a really capable ride quality where it can take on bad patches without breaking a sweat plus kryotec engine has a satisfactory enough performance to keep me happy. Yes, it isn’t a corner carver but I mostly travel with my dog or I drive solo at night on highways in both cases Harrier suits my needs better on highways.

Booking Update :

I have booked Thar LX RWD Petrol AT - Napoli black today and now I eagerly await its delivery. Tentative wait period is 3 weeks.

Congratulations man.

Once you understand how this Jeep likes to be driven , you will enjoy it more than pretty much any other vehicle you will come across, even on the highway you'd be grinning ear to ear.

List of Mods Done:
7. Earlier was a Convertible top - purchased the OEM Hard top.
That's quite a bit of modifications done. It looks smashing.
BTW how much did the OEM Hardtop cost?
I am planning the reverse, change from OEM HARD TOP to Convertible Top.

@owners, how do you manage ?
First sight yes it's. But you will slowly get used to it.

On a serious note,

Many times this has been discussed as 2nd gen Thar has comparison with only first gen, Gurkha and Gypsy. But there many other great things and sometimes there is no perfect one car. Thar is not a single car option. But can be easily lived with if there are even 4 passengers. This thing is a marvel.

FYI, I straight away rejected it in 2020 when I first sat on Thar because of the both driver side and passenger side space as I compared it with Wrangler. I'm also 5.11 and now I found the way to manage it in Thar. Always wear normal sized footwear which won't fiddle with the other pedal. Once you are used to the space then it's manageable. Actually just came back from a 1000 kms trip to GOC, 3 people on board. Did some serious offroading of 15 kms inside jungle in Nelliampathi area (stayed in KFDC and in a private resort). The beauty of this thing is that you get that confidence once sit up right there. And I was wearing Columbia trekking shoe size of 44 (they are wide and big usually) and I managed to find the sweet spot in the driving position. Travel log comes soon. With AVO suspension all around 85-90% of the ride is well sorted. Frankly, I thought I am more confident with Thar now with its 2.2 engine and the silent ride than my X1 (worrying of scrapping) in highways. There are few small sacrifices you have to make and it's worth it. X1 can touch slightly higher speeds without sweating while Thar I can't imagine doing that but 100 kmph is more than enough in most of the Indian conditions.

Will be watching this space since am in the same boat. Last time I checked with Mahindra, they didn't offer to do it. Seems like a lot of folks have gone through the after market route.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Two days ago my Thar was unable to start. Starter seemed okay but vehicle was not starting, took uber and then after returning some 2-3 hours later it did start on first crank with check engine lamp. Next morning again it did start with first crank with check engine lamp, took it to the service center and magically check engine lamp was gone. Obd scan reported problematic crank position sensor, they have now cleaned it up and returned the car after keeping under observation for one day. I wonder why would a sensor like this will go bad in 5-6 month new car.

Looking for daily use experience from owners in Metro cities. How has been your experience in terms of

- Daily drive experience in city traffice for auto or manual transmission.
- FE in city conditions for both Petrol and Diesel.
- Any fatigue observed due to typical BOF architecture.

I drive a stock Petrol Manual Thar to office at least 3 days a week. Rest of the days i take my Ciaz Petrol Manual. The commute is 25km one direction that involves 80% empty stretches and 20% Bangalore city traffic. Roads are typical Bangalore outskirt type = undulated and uneven.

-I get around 8-11kmpl average FE.

-It is not as easy as driving a 'car'. Fatigue depends on your stamina and driving style. Steering is heavy, gear shifts are notchy, and there will be lot of side to side movement and nose dive on braking. If you are driving without load in the back seats, brace for the 'kick' from the rear suspension when you go over speed barkers.

BUT, i am enjoying every bit of the Thar ownership.

-Simply put if you are not passionate about driving and owning a Jeep and if you are comparing the comfort level to other CSVUs you may not like the experience.

I've been driving a diesel automatic in Hyderabad and Mumbai. The gearbox has been really smooth and is always in the right gear.
In Hyderabad with smooth traffic I got 12kmpl and in Mumbai bumper to bumper slow traffic I would get around 9kmpl.

Fatigue depends on the roads you travel, on bumpy and uneven roads of mumbai the bouncy and body roll nature of the car shows, but then that can be managed by driving over uneven surfaces at slower speeds. I've done long traffic drives and interstate drives of 10 hrs in a day and both have been comfortable.

Haha apparently everyone wants change. Convertible top folks looking for hardtop and hardtop folks converting to convertible top. Only if there was a hardtop convertible
