Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

With all the discussion on Thar's fuel economy, what's the situation like with the Petrol MT on Thar 3D and Scorpio N?
The Thar 5D base model is very appealing for my family - looks like an excellent tourer!

Wondering how did they assess the demand even before the booking starts or is it another PR stunt just like the ‘huge backlogs’ for Mahindra vehicles ?

I think there is enough room for an AX7 4x4 only variant without ADAS & Sunroof/Moonroof and of course with dark interiors.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

As per brochure, AX3L has digital instrument cluster whereas in advertisement, digital cluster is shown first and later analog cluster is shown. Also AX3L and MX5 are priced same but MX5 vs AX3L main differences are below.

MX5

+ sunroof
+ TPMS
+ alloys
+ leather upholstery
+ foglamp
+ DRL
+ leather wrapped steering wheel
+ footwell lighting
+ tweeters
+ front parking sensor
- ADAS
- electric parking brake
- rear disc (not available in RWD variant)
- DTS sound staging
- auto climate control

You forgot to mention the royal blunder in XUV 700’s Rear Camera integration in top models and Mahindra Logo!

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

I like the straight lines of Scorpio better than the curvy XUV 700. But don't like the rear of both. I find the rear of Defender such an ugly one even when I like its all other sides. At the same time I like the rear of Thar and Jimny.

So let it be like that

Completely agree with you and all examples you mentioned above. Just look at new age Safari/Harrier/Nexon and then look at pre facelift models. Newer versions looks 15 years into the future.

Guenter Butschek's decision to let Bose go and onboard a visionary like Martin Ulharik was one of the best thing happened for Tata motors in recent years.

Goto Mahindra site , select your preference for tentative booking when bookings open. Hence, this allows for them to assess market demand.

That being said, I also agree with the post above. Best decision of Tata was to let go of Bose. But till date Tata portfolio is without 4x4 they have super efficient awesome MPVs Safari terrain modes works wonders, I recently went to interior himachal link roads just after rain which are mainly just markers. The vehicle was able to evade through them with ease. Stunning the locals.

Coming back to Thar Roxx, they cannot give us everything. A decent name, sober interiors, bottle holders. That being said if priced right I.e. The 4xplorer version I might just buy, will use to white interiors till they remain white, and then get it dark themed.

I presently have ScorpioN and Safari, engine and drive wise Safari is awesome. ScorpioN is no less and 4xplorer is a charm. Gurkha xtreme needs to be replaced and Roxx might just might takes it's place.

Thar design is based on CRDe, M38A1 and CJ5 etc, done by Kripa who is no longer with M&M. The 5 door vehicle was already running around in disguise before Mr Bose joined Mahindra. The first 5 door in camouflage was snapped on the road in December of 2021 just 6 months of him joining Mahindra. So I don't think Mr Bose has anything to do with the ground up design of any Mahindra vehicle so far. There maybe some bits and pieces here and there of course .

Maybe his job is to supervise and perhaps create new design language for their BEVs.

Tata may not have lost anything after the exit of Mr Bose , Perhaps just another employee.

Apologies for the noobish question but how are you supposed to get them dark themed? (Considering seat covers being out of question due to seat airbags and ventilated seats).

Using diesel exclusively for city traffic exclusively in a city like Bangalore, is almost a sureshot way to kill it.
I would not say this type of use "stresses" the diesel engine. I have a Thar 3D Diesel AT and use it in stop-start traffic every day on my short office commute which is all of 2 km each way. It takes 20 minutes to navigate these 2 kilometers. The diesel is very well suited for this kind of use, as the torque kicks in low in the rev band as compared to most petrols, totally eliminating any turbo lag. The smooth torque converter AT ensures the car can move along without any jerks in such traffic. If you see most taxis in the last 15 years have been diesels (Etios, Swift Desire, Innova and the like) which mostly di short runs all day in crowded city traffic and these engines are just as fit as when they were new, even after a decade. It is only the bodies of these cars that have become aged and creaky.

I agree such short runs do kill the FE of big desels, but not as much as they kill the FE of a similar petrol. My Thar's FE indicator is stuck at 7 KPL, the lowest it would show on the Thar, until I do a long drive. M&M cleverly made the FE display start at 7 kpl, and it will never display anything below that, probably for fear of backlash from the petrol Thar owners. Tank to tank methods show an actual FE just below 7.kpl, may be 6.75 kpl or so. If I had a petrol Thar, and used it for such commutes, FE would be even worse, probably 4 - 5 kpl.

I also agree this type of use is not good for the DPF, as it can get clogged sooner. But I do mix in a long drive once in a while, which burns the soot off and I also pour in a bottle of Mannol DPF cleaner once a year or so, which has effectively nullified the DPF issues.

I think the dealer must give the dark themed seat cars free in case ROXX OEM gives white option only. For my Jimny the dealer gave the seat covers free without asking. Jimny has 6 airbags.

I am not sure if Bose or someone else who was designing ROXX before him in Mahindra was instrumental in having raised roof at back in 2024. So they want to give a retro style? What is the thought process of the designer? When I was abroad in 1970s, I used to see a lot of French cars especially with quirky style of having a raised roof at back making the back windshield bigger than front windshield. It was fashionable in those days and also have a good utility and convenience to the back seat occupants. Going forward, aerodynamics and advances in design made all the roofs to be lowered at back to the extent that it becomes claustrophobic to the back seat occupants with a very small back windshield which makes the cars behind not visible in IRVM to the driver. I am not sure if the new or old design is better wrt roof slope.

I have seen similar black leatherette covers that dealer fitted on a facelifted Harrier. These are more like seat wraps where side of the seats are open so as not to interfere with airbags operation. Mahindra provides white and black seat cover options on 3XO and 3XO comes with 6 airbags standard. The dealers did not have any picture how black seat cover would look on 3XO AX7 white seats or white seat cover look on AX5 variant with black seats.
If Mahindra can provide good fit and finish black seat cover as official accessory, then may become one of the most sought after accessory after the front grille for Roxx.
