Given what I learnt from this discussion, I will have to change my plans a little bit. Currently, the car is undergoing body work with the Mark II grill getting fitted. The grill, the bumper guards and the decals on the side are the only differences between Mark I and Mark II ambassadors as far as I know. For now I will let the restoration proceed while I search for a Mark I grill and the bumper guards. This could take a while from what I have been told.

In the photo, you can see the car with its paint removed. The elderly gentleman on the passenger side front seat is my father's body shop person. He has worked on this car for more than 30 years. He was a bit grumpy when I first asked him to restore to Mark I/II - "I only cut that out in 1980".

Spotted this Mark2 at a traffic signal. The front looked neat too, lots of bling-bling, but unfortunately I couldn't snap a pic as the light turned green and he zoomed away.

Pleasantly surprised that you had the pic! The car looked much more 'shiny' now; lots of chrome.
The landscape appears to be Mysore.. Dhanvantri road, probably?

Can you or anyone confirm if Mark I & II came with the chrome beading in windshield ? Any closeup photo would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure that the trim did come from the Landmaster to the Mark 3 100%, for the Mark 4 maybe it was optional? For reference see the green Mark 2 posted above.

Karl,

If I remember correctly, the rubber beading profile was changed in the mark 4 making it not possible to fit a chrome beading.

The usual HM cost cutting exercise

I think maybe they could also be ordered in some sort of a deluxe (?) version? Ram had posted an older picture of his 1982 car showing the trim. Or maybe it was deleted later on...

Premier too deleted the trim around 1967, but reintroduced it with the first Padmini around 1975. Atleast the rubber with the groove was reintroduced, trim deleted from the Economy models. Ironically the original rubbers without the groove for trim for 1100 Delight cars is now impossible to find.

Dear Karl - I am conforming that I had gone to the National Garage workshop at Khira Nagar in Santacruz to take delivery of a brand new Ambassador petrol car in white color with floor shift transmission for converting to diesel with the XDP4.90 engine in Kandivli. This car was registered as MMH7432. It did not have the trims on the fenders as delivered brand new. This was in mid 1981.

Just for your records, the three project cars were MMB7342, MMH3679 (vertical engine) and MMH7432 (10 degrees inclined engine). .

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar
