Re: Bad Drivers - How do you spot 'em

How to spot bad drivers? For me, impatience is the first sign.

There is no problem with persons who try to drive faster than the others. The problem starts when they want to pass ahead regardless of the traffic conditions. Impatient drivers start bullying, and worse, try to weave their way ahead in a zig-zag manner.

This applies to vehicles of all sizes starting from a two-wheeler.

Overloaded truck, an accident waiting to happen given how much its tilting! And the truck was carrying considerable speed as well.

This petty greed of piling on a few extra bags is going to cost someone their life. It often does in the North with overloaded trolleys already.

This sight is quite common in this western part of Maharashtra, but usually it's tractor trolleys filled up with sugarcane and sluge, molasses going to and fro from n number of sugarcane factories. Folks doing Pune - Solapur route will be very well known with these. They're total menace on the roads, no working lights, no reflectors, loaded beyond their capacity and the tractor drivers are absolute morons. They drive on wrong side, overtake from left, right and center, blast loud music on those speakers, bullying cars and bikes off of road. Their stupidity is not limited to highway only, these guys are pain in city as well. You'll find atleast one tractor stranded right at the starting of the bridges in city. And due to the loads these guys pull, the front wheels of tractors get lifted up in the air, and these guys do it quite recklessly.
You name every trait of a bad driver and these guys have it !

It horrifies that such pictures are used in the media without a moment's hesitation. It helps normalise and encourage such behaviour. The media should have some responsibility and behave accordingly, but they do not. Probably written and edited by people who do this themselves.

(Nearly) ran into this idiot a few days back somewhere near Guruvayur. The moron enters the main road without looking and even fails to fully correct the steering wheel!

Idiots like these prove that rear-endings are not always the fault of the vehicle behind!

In those days most roads had a single lane in each direction so one would change lanes only while overtaking. Drivers used to honk while overtaking and the probability of yourself being overtaken while you are starting to overtake was rare. With more than one lane going in the same direction lane changes are much more frequent and side mirrors are a must on such roads.

One additional thing to look out for is vehicles coming in the opposite direction in such multi-lane roads. Earlier they used to drive on the shoulder or the left-most lane, but occasionally they come even on the right-most lane.

Why does it say 2018 in the footage though? I'd have thought setting the date and time correctly would be important in a dashcam. Does it reset itself by any chance?

It has reset itself many times, havent exactly figured out the root cause yet. Might be due to the battery running out after not being in use for a week or so.
