4x4 is needed when you are trying to do offbeat tracks in Ladakh. If you are going to do the typical circuit, any car would do. I did Ladakh 12 years back in my humble Ford Figo.

The only suggestion I'd like to give is, take a car that has good space for all your luggage since 4 of you are traveling together.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

Was curious, do these "6L oxygen Can" being sold around actually work ?
Or a proper cylinder is the only way to go ? If so what size should be taken ?

I understand that if we see AMS symptoms the only right thing to do is to descend.

I am still thinking of pursuing with the original plan, and take a call after hitting Ambala. If situation look right, we may push further on to Ladakh, else we would fork out to Himachal. Just wanted to get your views as well please.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

@mikepapa my Leh journey was a part of the longer 28day road trip to Tuljapur, Ujjain, Ranthambore, Mathura, Dehradun, Kashmir,& Leh. We had already started with the journey when this happened.

With the changes in the valley i was not comfortable driving though Srinagar. Also we dont know when the roads will close for whatever reasons. So to do away with all these uncertainties (if ,then, else) we have decided to not do the Kashmir Leh part for this year. We are going to be doing off the grid Himalayan hikes and villages in the Chamba areas .

I have dropped this plan as well. It is not worth the risk according to me.
I will be driving to Delhi on 1st and then take a call on where to go. Currently thinking of turning towards Spiti via Shimla. Will update if I am able to make and concrete plan.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

I’ve planned a trip from Chennai to Leh in mid-May. The original itinerary was to travel via Srinagar to Leh and return through Manali. However, due to the recent developments following the Pahalgam attack, I’m uncertain whether it will be safe to stick to this route or if I’ll need to take the Manali route to reach Leh instead. I’m scheduled to arrive in Srinagar on 17 May. Any updates on the current status or expected opening of the Manali-Leh highway around that time?

Folks, Please do some more research and check with the appropriate authorities and destination sources before leaving. There are reports of lots of closures of various spots across J&K by the govt. as a precautionary measure. Additionally many sections of the roads are also reportedly closed intermittently. You do not want to be stranded half-way unable to proceed.

Initially we planned to leave on 1st May, early morning. As everything got locked and loaded before time, so we reconsidered and started the drive on 30th April, 8:30 PM. Now we have crossed Dhule on 1st May, 2:30 PM. We are targetting to hit Ratlam today. These drive stats should pretty much speak for itself on the conditions of NH48-NH50-NH52. But the toll plazas are messed up. Most lanes do not work, manual scanners added to wait times. Silver lining in hindsight, was starting on the eve of Labour Day - added compounding effects in ditching highway traffic.

I think we would meet at Leh (or somewhere!).

+1.

While the western half of Jammu, and areas along the border are most likely closed - things can expand when ever there is military action. The roads would be prioritized for military traffic. And security agencies would not want to spending precious time dealing with tourists.

RE Himalyan Odessey'25 Ride- Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar

Hello Brothers,

I need your views about upcoming Royal Enfield Himalyan Odessey'25 route.
This time they are going to Spiti, in Leh only Hanle& Umlingla , and then Zanskar, not covering Leh circuit this time, as in no Zojila Pass, Kargil or Pangong Lake.

My query is : Would the tour be worth it going to Spiti/Zanskar and not to Kargil/Pangong.

I haven't been to Spiti or Zanskar, but i've been to Leh twice.

How's the spiti/Zanskar valleys as they would be main places this year, will it be worth the time of 18 days
