Roads across Manali sector are still in shambles.

Request Team members for suggestions advise on what to expect in each route, especially for motorcycle riders (motorcycle banned roads / hostile places / bad roads/ not to go places, if any). Thanks in advance.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

Planning to drive to Leh from Hyderabad. Are there any restrictions on timings (other than weather/traffic/maintenance situations) for private vehicles between Jammu and Kargil? Like are we able to drive 24x7 on this route?

Since we are planning to start our journey in next 10 days, can someone please help with details of petrol bunks in below routes. My plan is to avoid bringing jerry cans, if possible.

Hunder - Turtak
Nubra - Pangong
Pangong- Hanle
Hanle - TSO Moriri
TSO Moriri - Leh
Leh - Kargil

Leave by 630 AM from Jammu and should be able to reach Kargil but prepare to stay at Sonmarg. Traffic between Sonmarg and Zozila is highly regulated based on weather, traffic as well as road- blockage. You can’t predict in advance. Fridays to be avoided as they close for maintenance but still they end up opening for sometime in evening. Most likely you would reach Sonmarg around 4 PM if everything is normal they might allow you. Follow Twitter handle of JnK traffic police for update but still they are free to do what they want. I would suggest keep moving hoping for best but being prepared to stay back in Srinagar if you get stuck as Sonmarg has limited stay options and become expensive in last moment. Still you want to take chance go and keep trying at check-post. I know that they have even allowed people after 7 PM.

Leh - Hunder

Plenty of petrol pumps in Leh but remember they are in center or other side of town and none on as you come out towards Khardung La or Hunder as the climb start from Leh itself.

You have two petrol pumps before you reach Hunder. One after Khalsar ( after Go Karting) and another in Diskit town. None in Hunder.

Hunder - Turtak

None, but you don’t need as to and fro from Petrol pump at Diskit is approx 200 km.

Nubra - Pangong

Fill at Diskit or Khalsar previous evening and don’t wait for morning as there are queue in morning. 170 Km.

Pangong- Hanle

None. You do get petrol diesel from locals in Hanle at slightly higher rate. Quality is questionable.

Hanle - TSO Moriri

None. You have to do something in Hanle itself.

TSO Moriri - Leh

Petrol pump at Karu, which is approx 30 km before Leh.

You have to carry Jerry can if you are planning above circuit.

Leh - Kargil
You have Petrol Pump in Kargil town but none enroute.

Google maps shows a new pump at Tangste.

Would be helpful for Hanle runs.

This is indeed very good news. Will surely help bikers but not greatly to four wheelers as their tank would be more than 3/4 full on way to Pangong or Hanle (either from Nubra or Leh via Pangong)

A pump at Hanle is badly needed. May be it will be now be easy for locals in Hanle to source fuel and sale from Tangste which is still be 200 km away from Hanle.

I came from Spiti to Chandigarh with a stop in Manali last week. The roads around Kullu-Mandi section are severed. The authorities are trying their best to provide alternate routes and have carved out single lanes. But these are only minimal and they are bound by time constraints. Follow DCKullu and a few other HP road update handles on Twitter. They send our restrictions for the day.

From what I saw, it should be ok to travel back in case absolutely needed. But do keep a lot of buffer time. We took around 10 hours for Manali Chandigarh on 28th August.

Did Patnitop-Kargil on Monday. There was no checking or restriction of any kind between Jammu-Srinagar or Srinagar-Kargil. There was no checking at Zoji La pass either. Traffic was flowing freely in both the directions. Just a routine check post near Ramban. The road in Ramban area is in pretty bad shape. But once you cross Banihal-Qazigund tunnel, the road is like super smooth till Zoji La. The road at Zoji La pass is in pretty bad shape in parts. Zoji La to Kargil is one of the most amazing two lane asphalt!

Guys, need a help please. I’m currently in Hunder and planning to ride to Pangong tomorrow early morning. Any leads on the road conditions would be very helpful.

Just completed my ride last week, its like 60% off-road, few water crossings. hopefully not much land-slide. we encountered one in between but BRO cleared it quickly, this was one of that roads.

Did the 34 days 9331 kms ride to Ladakh and back from 1st September to 4th October with my two friends

Refilled at Tangste pump and also carried 8 litres of petrol in cans from there.

One more Indian Oil pump was under construction at Nyoma. So no more jerry cans required for Hanle rides.

Reconstruction of roads in the Manali sector were going on pedal to the metal. However we were stuck in a half an hour traffic block since traffic was allowed only on one direction at a time.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

No action on this thread for more than a month!

Requesting travel gurus to comment on the below mentioned itinerary (Ex-Delhi). Tentative plan is June second week. Vehicle is Scorpio-N AT 4WD.

Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide-leh2024.jpeg

Specifically:
1. Is Day 11 doable considering the approach road to Tso Moriri?

2. Any idea about how bad the road is between Sumdo-Puga-Tsokar-Thukje-Meroo and how much time would it take? Just contemplating if it would make sense to trace back to Upshi/Karu and stay at Upshi overnight? Or (preferred option) stay overnight at Tso Moriri and head to Manali through Sumdo-Puga-Tsokar-Thukje-Meroo route by carrying extra fuel?

3. Assuming tankful range of Scorpio-N to be around 400KM considering the terrain, Tangste Bunk-Pangong-Hanle-Umlingla-Hanle-Tsomoriri-Upshi-Karu Bunk is 740 Km so I'm planning to carry 40L (2 jerry cans of 20L each) diesel from Tansgte. Would that be sufficient?

4. Also, Tangste Bunk-Pangong-Hanle-Umlingla-Hanle-Tsomoriri-Tsokar-Thukje-Tandi (H.P.) Bunk is 880 Km. Would extra 50L diesel be sufficient?

5. Any other optimizations (route/days schedule) possible?

6. What should be carried from vehicle perspective-Air pump, puncture repair kit, engine/brake oils, coolants. Anything else? Would be helpful if someone can point to any thread/post which has these details.

7. Would AT tyres be required? Existing tyres are factory fitted A/S.

8. Any recommendations for Hygienic and family friendly accommodations at Hunder, Pangong and Tsomoriri?

9. Lastly, is this too much for kids (age 10 and 7)? Would they be able to cope with the routes/schedules?

Thanks in advance.

Instead of going from Sonamarg to Leh in one shot, I would recommend one night stay @ Kargil.
Reason, you should take Kargil to Leh route at your leisure and with multiple photo breaks in between.
From Hanle, if you leave early in the morning for Umling la, you can reach Tso Moriri by evening.

#1 - Hanle to Tso Moriri is doable. Route is pretty nice till 35-40 Km before Tso Moriri.
Stay Options @ Tso Moriri are good. We stayed at a homestay (in front of some Govt. building Health Center sort of thing) at the start of the main village.
Very Decent rooms and nice food too.

#2 - Stay @ Tso Moriri and Start Early in the morning to Manali on this route.
Dirt tracks are from Sumdo-Puga-Tsokar-Thukje-Meroo. Construction is going on, traffic is low and roads are enjoyable and its shorter as well. Highly Recommended route.
You can get diesel in Tso Moriri market (from Jerry Cans). Please use a good piece of cotton cloth as a filter while filling the fuel.

#3 - At Leh - Get a 15-20 litre reserve can filled + Tankful.
Get a tankful at 'Siachen Turtuk More' while coming back from Hundar.
Get a top-up @ Tangste bunk.
Get a 20 liter fill 2 Tso Moriri.
This should be enough for you till Manali.

#6 - Just keep Air pump, puncture repair kit, Basic Tool kit.
#7 - I think ATs are not required. Just keep your tyres in good health.
#8 - Hunder - there are a lot of options there. You can search travel portals or if you are landing there early, just go and check the rooms on-the-spot and decide.
@ Pangong - we stayed at Merak at a nie Homestay. Multiple options there.
#9 - I think it won't be that much for kids. They will enjoy. Just keep them properly hydrated and have a lot of healthy snacks. Don’t forget to buy a lot of fruits enroute.
Consult with your doctor for medication in case they get motion sickness and Diamox for altitude sickness.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

Hi Members!

We are a group of 10, planning for a trip to Leh-Ladakh region in mid April this year (April 15-30). We wish to go on a bike trip circuit in Leh, starting from Leh and exploring the valley for 5-6 days before returning back to Leh.

We wanted to know if it is a good time to visit the region, the general condition of the roads, major routes open/closed, and other key information. Possible circuits to cover and explore are also much appreciated!

Thanks!
