Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

One quick question....
Do you require ILP to go to Hanle and umlingla pass?
The Google search threw out confusing answers.
Also do you require any interaction with any local agents at all?

Yes. You apply online and show that permit at Loma bridge.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

This year it is mentioned on the POP UP that Indian Nationals do not need any Permit. The Payment Receipt can be shown in Physical or Digital format at the check posts.
Folks arriving by flight need to retain the boarding pass.

This includes Hanle (and as I have read elsewhere), Umlingla Pass too.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

Hey folks, me and the wife and dabbling in the idea of doing Leh in September this year. We intend to fly into Leh, acclimatise and then move onwards on a rented motorcycle.

Hanle is a must do for us. From what I found out, heading to Hanle from Leh, there are no petrol pumps till you return back to Leh. So we'll have to carry jerry cans and then get petrol from the locals. Is this the way to do this route?

Still trying to finalise the itinerary. Any pointers are appreciated.

Friends, need some inputs here,

1. When is the Kaza to Manali road expected to open for bikers?
2. Any good bike rental tbhpians recommend ex-Chandigarh?
I'm planning a quick solo spiti circuit ride in mid May 23 provided roads open.

1. I just came back from Kaza and the word on the street is that Kunzum should open by the second week of May.

2. Northern Riders or Himalayan Bike Rental

According to the order of Deputy Commissioner, Lahaul and Spiti, Rahul Kumar, the movement of 4x4 vehicles would be allowed from May 16 beyond Darcha in Lahaul and Spiti towards Leh via Baralacha pass for the locals between 8 am and 11 am. However, the tourist vehicles will be allowed only up to Patsio, a few km ahead of Darcha.

You can call Lahual and Spiti DC office (01900202501) / DDMA office (01900202509) to get the latest info.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

Hello all,

We have planned an impromptu roadtrip to Leh from Chennai, starting this monday just to elude from Chennai's heat.

Any specific rules/permits that has to be taken before visiting?

Can you guys share a quick overview of the itinerary? also the essentials required for such a roadtrip.

We are planning to stay there for 5 days and could manage the route till Delhi, but beyond that, we need some clarifications/suggestions on the roads to be taken for Leh.

Since its an unplanned one, we don't mind losing few checkpoints over the journey.

Thank you in advance

Hey Guys,

After days of planning, finalized the following, and all the hotel bookings enroute are done.

Day 1 - NCR to Patnitop
Day 2 - Patnitop to Sonmarg
Day 3 - Sonmarg to Kargil
Day 4 - Kargil to Leh
Day 5 - Leh Local
Day 6 - Leh Local
Day 7 - Leh Local
Day 8 - Leh to Diskit/Hunder
Day 9 - Turtuk
Day 10 - Hunder to Tangste ( Pangong )
Day 11 - Tangste to Hanle
Day 12 - Hanle to Umling La and back
Day 13 - Hanle to Tso Moriri
Day 14 - Tso Moriri to Jispa
Day 15 - Jispa to Manali
Day 16 - Manali Local
Day 17 - Manali to NCR
Day 18 - Buffer Day

Note -
Right now traffic from Srinagar to Kargil is being let go in odd-even fashion - if this continues till my departure days, then will have to extend Sonmarg by 1 day, and reduce Leh by 1 day.

Hey !
Itinerary which i'll be following is shared just above this post - you can modify if as per your available days.

Online Permit is needed - apply it, and remember that the start date on the permit is +2 days from your mentioned journey start date. For instance, if you are entering Leh on 5th June, enter the start date as 2nd June.

Leh to Hanle is approx 250 kms from the normal Leh > Hemis > Chumathang > Nyoma > Rhongo route.
Last petrol pump coming from Leh is at Karu which is about 30 kms from Leh.
So your total travel will be - 230 kms + 230 kms = 460 kms
Based on bike you would rent, calculate the mileage - if its rented bike, go with minus 25% from normal mileage figure.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

Sonmarg to Kargil was not allowed today. And it was raining heavily for 30 mins around 6pm in Sonmarg. But somehow our driver managed to get the permission around 6:50pm and we had an excellent drive through empty roads. Reached Kargil around 10pm.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

I have read contradictory statements and need some clarity.

I am planning to reach Sonmarg on 1st June and move to Kargil on 2nd June ( Friday )

Few have told me that Friday is closed for traffic.
Others have told me that Friday is closed only for heavy vehicles and normal passenger vehicles are allowed.

Can someone please help in this ?
It will be ruining all my plans, as missing 2nd June would mean that next allowed trip would be on 4th June ( because of ongoing Odd/Even traffic rule )

Just back from a road trip to Ladakh. Started from Hyderabad on 13th May and back home on 26th May.

Since you will be travelling from Sonmarg to Kargil, it is suggested that you check with the Police Control Room (dial 112) on the previous day on the road condition and movement of traffic i.e. from Sonmarg to Kargil or the other way. I learnt it the hard way as I too had to spend a day in Sonmarg instead of Kargil. Also, please reach the entry point check post at the earliest. Traffic gets piled up pretty quickly and you should enter the climb before heavy vehicles are allowed.

Yes, Zojilla Pass is shut on Friday for all traffic (for preventive maintenance) barring Army convoy.

Similarly, Leh- Manali highway route is open for traffic on alternate days. Hence please check with the Police Control Room before proceeding. In my case, after speaking with the control room team, fortunately it was open for traffic from Leh to Manali on the the day I was travelling.

Even on this route, reach the Upshi Check post at the earliest.
