You may try Hotel Siddharta. The tariff should suit your budget. Hotel Sandesh, The Prince may be a tad expensive.
You can check the hotel website at http://www.hotelsiddharta.com/

One more option is Hotel Dasaprakash. The website is http://www.mysoredasaprakashgroup.com/demo/dasaprakash/

I remember this absolutely fantastic pre 4 lane road. Sparse traffic, very cool even in the hottest summer, it was a joy to drive, but now all has changed. those were the good old days

re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

Thank you all for your invaluable suggestions. I completed the trip last weekend as planned. It was Bangalore - Mysore - Bandipur - Bangalore.
Didn't go for safari in Bandipur since our Grandma wouldn't have been able to handle that. But we had fun.

Here are some pics -

New Eating Joint on Bangalore - Mysore highway (atleast I didn't see it in August while on the way to Coorg). It's located on the left while on the way to Mysore. Top class food. Up-South has always been my favourite joint for South Indian delicacies, however, Veg By Nature was fantastic as well. We ordered a palak paneer sans onion & garlic for our Grandma, and believe me it was just yummy. The Laccha Paratha was butter smooth as well.

Mylari - While I didn't notice a sign outside, there was one definitely inside saying "We don't have other branches". And the dosas were unbelievable. 25/- per masala dosa, every penny was worth it!

All pics after entering Bandipur taken from the car, without halting at un- designated places.

We did take a halt at the Tourist Reception Center in Bandipur where I washed the front and rear windshields and also inquired about the Safaris available.

Total Distance Travelled - 525 kms

Mileage - 21.8 kmpl

Congratulations on completing the trip with your grandmother. Glad that she loved the food. . By the way, where is this new food joint? Is it after Srirangapatna? Also which hotel did you stay in Mysore?

This new joint is 110 kms from Bangalore, and is on the left-hand side while heading to Mysore. If you are coming from Mysore, there is a gap in the divider bang opposite to this food court. This is a very well thought out gap since there is no requirement to drive on the wrong-side of the road.

There are ample signs on either sides of the road indicating the distance to this joint.

To the best of my knowledge, below is the address -

Right O' Food Hub, Plot # 7, Tubinkere Industrial area, Bangalore – Mysore highway, 10kms after Mandya town.

The options available are -

UpSouth, Vegbynature, Subway, ammi's Biryani, Cafe Coffee Day Lounge, Shanghai Times, Marhaba, Polar Bear Ice Creams, Coco Stop.

Couple of the ones in the list mentioned above are yet to be operational. Subway and Coffee Day were for sure not in service.

Parking facilities at the Right O' food court -

On a side note, I also came across Corner-House for the first time on this highway. May be I didn't notice it in my trips prior to the last one.

We stayed in Ginger, Mysore, and I am happy that I chose that hotel (location-wise).

Sunny's dusted windshield below. Finally cleaned it in Bandipur Tiger Reserve reception center in order to avoid inferior quality snaps being taken from the car.

Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries-20131201_125007.jpg

Mylari hotel is 5 mins walking distance from Ginger. The Palace, Zoo, etc. are also within 10 mins drive of the Hotel. Hotel Siddhartha, where we had our lunch is close by too. Access to roads heading outside the city of Mysore is a cake walk.

Sunday Breakfast -> Kamat on Bangalore - Mysore highway

Sunday Lunch -> Hotel Siddhartha, Mysore. Very good vegetarian hotel. Paneer Butter Masala sans garlic-onion for my grandmother was promptly served.

Sunday Evening Brinner (when there is Brunch, then why not Brinner) -> GTR

Monday Breakfast -> Mylari (sirf naam hi kaafi hai!!) Should my wife agree, we will pretty soon head to Mysore just for having these dosas again!

Monday late lunch -> Up-South and Veg By Nature

I would recommend Hotel Siddharta and Dasaprakash Paradise (Dasaprakash group has two hotels, paradise is better one). Any day they are better than otehrs both interms of VFM and quality of service and food.

Hotel Siddharta is near to palace, zoo and also in city center. Having said that travel time between Dasaprakash Paradise and the palace is also less than 15 minutes. So it should not matter. Both of them have excellent restaurant.

Dosa at GTR (Gayatri Tiffin Room) is any day great. While Mylari is good, it is congested. I would prefer GTR any day...

Is this Dasaprakash Paradise in the same compound? I have been there once for food and the building looked very old.

Dasaprakash is not in the same compound as Siddartha if that's what you meant.
Dasaprakash group has 2 hotels in Mysore - the newer Hotel Paradise (aka Dasaprakash Paradise) in Yadavagiri and the older Hotel Dasaprakash (Modern Cafe) in the heart of the city at Gandhi Square.

re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

Guys which is the fastest route (good road surface/less speed breakers and potholes) to reach Ooty from Bangalore? Can it be done in 5hrs

I am planning BLR>Kanakpura>Malavalli>Kollegal>Chamrajanagar>Gun dulpet>Masinagudi>Ooty

Any other route/deviations etc which is better?

The route which you mentioned is the quickest to Ooty.
Reaching Ooty in 5 hours I feel is bit of stretch, though possible with some aggressive driving and based on time of your journey.
Kanakpura road NICE road junction to Gundulpet takes around 3.5 hours.

5 hrs seem like a hot rod drive. You might lose out on enjoying the drive. The above said route is fine though.

re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

Anybody traveled the Theppakadu-Gudalur stretch recently? How is the road condition? When I traveled in September, this stretch was in pretty bad condition with several broken stretches with large pot holes? Has this section been patched?
