The guys I asked said Kalpetta is the best area to stay in; so booked a cottage there.

Any suggestions?
Vythiri is an option.

I guess SH17 (BLR-MYS) will be having considerable traffic due to Christmas holidays. An early start, if possible, will help you keep a cool mind on this highway. Usually this highway (towards BLR side) becomes like a city road on Sunday evenings.

I am planning to visit Wayanad with my family on 31 Dec to 2 Jan
Would be taking following route
Bangalore -> Mysore -> Guldalpet -> Sultan battery -> Wayanad
Folks anyone recently visited Wayanad to get the feeling of road conditions and climate
Also i heard Eddekal Caves are closed. Is it true

I just got back 2 days ago.
Why don't you take a look at the travelogue I just posted. You'd have all the answers!

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

One word though, the trip will be worth it!

Re: Route query to Wayanad

Hi,
This route "Bangalore -> Mysore -> Guldalpet -> Sultan battery -> Wayanad " is OK. Mysore Gudalpet road is little rough, pot holes etc.
Suggest drive down to Coimbatore from Bangalore & try this route.
BLR-CJB-Mettupalayam-OOty-SultanBathery-Wayanad.
On return, probably you can drive down via Mysore.
I stayed in Green Gates HOtel.
Decent stay, good food, & good hospitality.
Have a nice trip!safe trip.
cheers
Velu

You mean the BLR-Krishnagiri-Salem-CBE-mettupalayam-Ooty-Bathery?.

Driving close to 600kms in place of just 250kms, so that you can avoid 20kms of bad stretch is not logical.

Re: Route query to Wayanad

was looking for road conditions towayanad but didnt really get recent update. So thought if anyone else needs to know the condition, this would be helpful.

The route i took to go to Wayanad was the Blr-Mysore-Gundalpet-Sultan bathery-Kalpetta. The entire route is very good and hence good to travel. I travelled in a Figo, completely loaded and didnt have any problems anywhere. Just need to be careful of the Mysore road 'Invisible' speed breakers (if you travel in the day, they should not be an issue)

I traveled to Vythiri a month back and found the roads to be very good. Even the Mysore-Nanjangud stretch has been patched-up and its a lot better compared to what it was 2-3 months ago. There are fair amount of invisible speed breakers, especially in the Mandya-Mysore stretch and some police zig-zag.

We came back via Manthawadi and Kabini. There is one horrible stretch near Kabini and otherwise this route too is very good.

If you are driving very early, pl. be ultra careful near "undabattikere" (not sure of the exact spelling), a lake about 10kms from Mysore, towards Nanjangud. This lake is notorious for early morning accidents for some reason.

Re: Route query to Wayanad

Did Bangalore - Srirangapatnam - Hunsur - Nagerhole - Kutta - Toalpetty - Tirunelly. Roads are not so good betwen Srirangapatnam - Yelwale and Tirunelly temple stretch (road work is going on here). Came back through kattikulam - Kabini (horrible stretch as mentioned by Prasad) - Mysore - Malavalli (bad stretches for close to 20 kms) - Kanakpura - Bangalore.

Re: Route query to Wayanad

Not exactly a route query, but here goes.
What would be the best place to catch sunrise and sunset in Wayanad?

Re: Route query to Wayanad

Sunset - no second thoughts, it must be the view point near Vythiri.
Since Wayanad is on the western slopes of the Western Ghats, there are no clear sunrise points - Banasura Sagar Dam can be given a try

Well, there is a place called Sunrise Valley, on the way from Bathery to Mepadi. I have not been to the place, so not sure about how it is. Though, if you stay some place near, you might wanna check it out.

Re: Route query to Wayanad

Vyithri view point and sunrise valley. Noted. Thanks mallumowgli and dhanushs. In the present scheme of things, I might be staying in Kalpetta.

Bangalore-Mysore : Nice 4 lane highway except for the speed breakers that seem to sprout like mushrooms at every other place, high traffic and slow passage through towns (Ramanagara,Channapatna,Maddur,Mandya and Srirangapatna).

Mysore-Nanjangud : Road is back in good shape, but traffic is heavy, and overtaking opportunities limited. Add the odd speed breaker here and there and the slaloms created by traffic police, and this still ends up being the slowest stretch. (The one just after Mysore Ring Road is terrible - the last 2 or 3 times I passed this way, had to wait in queue for almost 5 minutes to get through this one)

Nanjangud-Gundlupet : Good road, reasonably sparse traffic.

Gundlupet to Batheri : Good road most of the way except for the occasional speedbreaker here and there and the odd pothole. One bad ditch just after Ponkuzhi temple (the first village after you cross over to Kerala) - Has been filled up now, but watch out for sharp stones projecting out.

Batheri - Kalpetta : Reasonable roads, occasional bad stretches (but pretty short ones)

Overall one should be able to do Kengeri to Kalpetta in about 4.5 hours or so.
