The roads from Mangalore to Bangalore are in excellent condition. So much so that I came across 2 fresh accidents on my way to Bangalore yesterday

Even the ghat roads are in good condition and I could do a steady 60 - 80 kmph. Left Mangalore (Pumpwell circle) at 5 PM and reached Bangalore Yeswanthpur at 10.30PM. The last 100 kms upto Nelamangala can be done in less than an hour.

Yes, returning via Horanadu is definitely possible. The drives both from Tirthahalli to Horanadu via Sringeri and Kudremukh is beautiful. With summer rains in the region, it will be green and nice. Again the journey from Horanadu till Kottigehara is lovely. Suggest return via Kalasa - Kottigehara - Mudigere - Gendehalli - Belur - Hassan.

I can't PM as you are a Newbie. Give me a call at 98450 44486 and we can talk.
Dear Fauji,

Thanks for the information and suggestions for my trip. We had a wonderful time around Tirthahalli. We managed to see only few places than that was originally planned (problem with the age group and fitness levels). We could not do Kavale Durga, Sigandur, Hornadu. We look at this as an opportunity to visit this area again (post monsoon). The stay at Bananki was good, but the food and hospitality was outstanding.

@MaverikMahesh : Even we went to Thirthahalli area 2 weeks back. Stayed at Kolavara Heritage, about 10 kms from Bananki. Excellent place with superb food and hospitality. Our group also consisted of age groups 4-70 years and our outing was limited to a visit to Kuppalli & kavishyla.

Udupi to bangalore via kudremukh - 05/04/12

Udupi to karkala via manipal - very good road condition
Karkala to kalasa - very good road
Kalasa to kottigehara - good roads with few potholes .. But very few. And some irregular easily motorable roads.
Kottigehara to mudigere to belur - fresh tarmac in excellent condition
Belur to hassan - fantastic roads
Hassan to bangalore - everyone knows.

What about driving through the tunnel the next time you drive to Mangalore!

Business Line : Industry & Economy / Logistics : Karnataka exploring high-speed rail connectivity with Japanese help

Looks like a very interesting proposal.

@MCR; As far as I know the biggest problem in High Speed Trains is to have corridors which are totally fenced off. Once you tray and go about 160kph they become necessary. This is politically unacceptable.

Doc :
Mudigere to Belur - is this via Gonibeedu? is the road fully asphalted? Last heard it was done only from Belur upto Jannapura.

Any idea how is charmadi ghat road condition from Ujire to Kottigehara?

Yes was vis gonibeedu. Road completed upto the belur town.

I initially had planned to come down from kudremukh and then take charmadi road as last time i had gone through mudigere to belur , was nightmare. So spoke to local drivers they said the road via mudigere to belur was new , hence took that road.

Also spoke about the condition of charmadi., they said it is a bit irregular but decent condition and certainly motorable.

This is a very good news. Makes life easy for anyone who has to travel from Bangalore to Horanadu or Charmadi or Kudremukh.

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi Everyone,

Posting in the forum after a long time. I am planning on doing some tirtha yatre to the temple belt of South Canara(Samurai and Others might be very familiar with most of these temples). I will be the Sole driver with wife and two young kids.

a) I would like to post my route here and ask for some feedback on how difficult/tiring it is to do it/ more optimum way/route to do it. Am I biting off more than I can chew ?

b) I also would like to know where to stay along this route.

ROUTE:

c) Not sure how Mangalore and it's beaches fit into the trip, but would like to try

1) On Saturday morning, 5 am start, and I will be going from Bangalore to Kukke, kukke to Dharmasthala (maybe halt here , accomodation ideas most welcome).

2) Next day Dharmasthala to Horanadu and horanadu to kateel. Halt at suratkal. Red rock maybe not sure.

3) Kateel to bangalore. back to pavilion on Monday. I am taking the day off

Here's the route I plan to take:

Directions from Bangalore to Kateel via Subrahmanya, Dharmasthala, Horanadu

Thanks in advance to all replies. Any reply is most welcome ! You will be doing me a favor.

Why not go to Kateel/Surathkal from Dharmsthala and visit Horanadu on the return journey to Bangalore? You'd save about 75-80kms.

I know places, but not temples. Not very religious, I gotta confess.

I too back prasad14's recommendation. You could cover Sringeri/Udupi within this trip, not interested?

You could do Kukke, Dharmasthala & a Mangalore beach on the first day. Then do Kateel-Udupi-Sringeri on the second day. Horanadu on the way back to Bangalore on the third day.

Tunnel b/w Sakleshpur and Gundya

CM announces 20km tunnel between Sakleshpur and Gundya.

Very interesting. Will have to see how fast this would be done. We perhaps have more interesting things to discuss on this thread once the tunnel is done.

@prasad14 Thank you very much for your suggestion. I am taking it.

@Samurai

Thank you even more for suggesting to hit up Udupi. Is there any chance of meeting you ? Considering that you live in/around Udupi ?

Places are also good. Please suggest some good beaches/ places around the general area of my visit. Not sure if I can spend more than a few hours on any of them though honestly considering my packed schedule.
