Re: Question about Indian Customs and your experience

Now the Customs duty for personal use got hiked.

The fresh tax rate stands at 41.49% on the items worth more than Rs. 2000 INR. On the other hand, items having a price under Rs. 2000 will be charged with a customs duty of 14.7%. When it comes to the goods that have been priced at Rs. 50,000, then the customs duty percentage stands at 41.492%, the item has to comply with the CTH 9804 policy as well.

But Though i bought an item for Rs.1100, i got duty for Rs.426. I sent Re assesment, But still they had not lowered the duty. Though i had sent all supporting documents like Credit card statement, original screen shot while transaction, and present price of product with my car RC, DL, UIDAI card etc.

As per my documents , since it is less than Rs.2000, They should charge 14.7% only. But still they had used 42% slab. I dont want to wait much and go to wall by wall. So going to pay Rs.426 plus Rs.30 postal charge. tomorrow. Is there any option to get refund or open this issue of slabs at higher authority?

For the purpose of calculating duty, the value of the item would not be what you paid for it, but what rates they have in their list. This could be the reason for the higher rate.

Yes, May be initially they could have quoted the duty as per their assessment or with their list of certain goods. But even if i send the supporting documents, which i paid for and current price screenshot and links, it seems they are bit lazy to look into it. Just returned as it is. Just came to know why people smuggle

Bought an Rear Camera for car with Dynamic trajectory. Only the camera, not bought additional display.

Same happened to me a few weeks ago. Bought a dash cam for 1800/- from AE and seller quoted $20 and still I was charged customs and postal charges.

Re: Question about Indian Customs and your experience

My sister sent personal stuff (doll, dress, toy) for my daughter's first birthday by USPS along with some vitamins for my mom. Some are used items.
Total value was about 150$ max even if items are all considered new. Got a call stating RS. 6500 tax has been charged! Quite shocked

Orders From alibaba stuck with customs

India, MUMBAI FOREIGN POST OFFICE, Record item customs information (Inb), Air, MUMBAI AIR, Retention Reason : Retained by customs for unspecified reason

This is the update I was getting on the tracking website since a week. The order in concern, 3 Bluetooth headphones, purchase value of $42.54.

This is the first time my order has been stuck with customs since past 3 years of monthly orders from Aliexpress. The reason being. I placed the order for 3 pieces of headphones together as I wanted them to be delivered together.

Irrespective of the order cost, the issue here is the 3 pairs of in ear Bluetooth phones which made for a noticeable sized package.

Since the package was stuck for 8 days, I went to the Mumbai Foreign post office at Ballard pier to enquiry about the same.

I was told that the parcel is under scrutiny, it will be opened, checked and then delivered to my place along with the customs duty ( which they were unaware of) in next 7-8 days. it’s going to be a LONG wait.

Looks like many parcels are stuck under clearing process. I have 2 parcels of mine and couple of my friends. same status since 8th of August. Probably they will be clearing FIFO type. Mine are still not cleared so yours which has line up since 19th August (considering you have posted your reply on this date) will take some more time i guess. Would mind sharing the tracking number over private msg.

One more thing to add, last month onwards there have formalized the evaluation process, I had ordered a jacket from Ali which has value 45USD and i was charged 10% Duty and 28% IGST .Total 38% , and it came on a formal printed document with my name and parcel content and value and all other xyz information.

Looks like there is a delay on assessment due to shortage of staff.

I was checking most of the parcels clearing date since retention on Google. After tracking most of the parcels mentioned in complaint forums, what i have discovered is mumbai and chennai customs take almost 15 days for clearing.
My two parcels have been retained on 14th & 18th august respectively.i guess two many holidays too making things difficult.

What is the declared value of the packages? Both my packages though cost more, I got them to declare it as $15 so no duty is attracted.

I've got delivery of 3 packages within 24 days from the order date. Customs cleared the packages in 2 days in my case.

Re: Question about Indian Customs and your experience

Just a general note for others - If your parcel is marked Gift and the total value of goods is less than Rs. 10,000, (excluding shipping), you don't have to pay any duty. I have ordered stuff ranging from Rs. 60 to Rs. 11,000 and never had to pay any duty as long as the parcel was marked gift. However, I ordered 2 dash cams worth $79 and they are now held up in customs. This time though, I forgot to remind the seller to send as a gift, lets see how much duty is charged.

My package value declared is $30 and this is the status of the product.

Actually i have ordered almost 10 parcels from AliExpress
I have received two parcels above $50 without any duties as seller undervalued them and packaging was compact.
I am surprised as parcel which costs $10 is retained, may be bacause $5 Price tag along with medium size package created some doubts in their mind
Another parcel is around $50 which is of Reverse camera and sensors. I am sure seller have undervalued it too.
