Re: Bodybuilding - Exercises and Supplements

Customs in India has come a long way. I wouldn't worry about a single tub of whey being subjected to duty. In any case, if you would like to be cautious, just open it beforehand and in the unlikely event of being questioned (a very very low chance) say you take it for medicinal reasons!

This video will make most of us, who lift weights get a funny smile on face and a tiny tear on the edge of our eyes.

Keep lifting brothers for as they say, "Weights dont lift themselves."

Manohar Aich, Mr. Hercules in 1950 at an unbelievably short height of 4.11.

A book on bodybuilding written by two Indian bodybuilders in 1930.

Interestingly, the early stories on Indian bodybuilding (not wrestling) that I have heard are all from Bengal. Aich and the two men writing the book are also from Bengal. Was it British influence? Definitely, a subject worth exploring.

Any leads please?

Absolutely a British influence, who in turn were influenced by the mainland European preferences regarding aesthetics (you may check Rennaissance art); the renaissance artists in turn were influenced by the Greek aesthetics.

Barring the Ancient Greeks, none of the other ancient civilization-cultures deified the lean muscular aesthetics!

What leads are you looking into? Tips on how they looked that way? What they trained or ate?

Sorry I should have been specific. Say, if I want to write an article on the genesis of bodybuilding in India, what resources or pointers you would suggest? Was it just confined in the early period to Bengal or was it prevalent in other parts of the country? Pointers to some authentic resources, etc.

Thanks.

Re: Bodybuilding - Exercises and Supplements

Hi all. I am currently 30 years old and recently have been promoted to be a father!

With my wife at my in-laws place for the past 2.5 months, I tried cut down my weight. In a bid to do so, I got myself a smart watch capable of reading the distance I cover (it's 90% accurate). I have tried doing 10 Kms walk/small runs(only when I am fresh) in a day. So far it's been working great and I am seeing visible changes.

Do you recommend stepping this up, or is a 10Km walk per day enough to cut down the small belly I still have?

Consistency is more important than the length. What you are doing is pretty much good. Cut off carbs - mostly sugars - it will work wonders. All the best!

Il start with the not so so good news: the remaining belly fat can be very stubborn to remove depending on your genetics. For me, I'll have to dip into underweight BMI to get rid of the abdominal fat, which remains even at a 28" waist.

If you have a lot of time and patience, walking is a great low intensity exercise. I would however recommend considering
Swimming, running, HIIT etc which will burn 2x calories for the same time and give you benefits due to training in zone 4/5 (walking usually is in zone 1/2)

Also there's a slightly simplified saying "you can't outrun your fork" - From a calorific and weight perspective, one hour of the most intense workout can be undone by one minute of gluttony

Thanks for the advice. My daily walk starts with a 3.2-3.4 Km morning walk. Of this distance I run for around 0.8 km. Then during the daytime I ensure I cover the remaining 4.6-4.8 kms with small bursts of 10-15 min walks or a long evening walk or combine both and then my total day's walk is about 10-11 kms. All these readings are through a smartwatch which shows about 20% lesser distance covered than the actual. So in effect I manage anywhere between actual 10 & 12-13 kms per day.

With your advice I will try to increase my morning run to atleast 2 kms from current 0.8 kms. Swimming is little difficult at the moment. I hope the increase in running helps me bit more.

All the best , running might feel horrible in the beginning, but it will feel addictively good soon.

Ps: might be worthwhile to check/ be on the lookout for any underlying risk factors - heart, joints etc as you ramp up your duration and intensity

Quoting my Sept 2024 post.

Recently, after loosing another 2 inches from my tummy circumference, I asked ChatGPT to estimate my body fat percentage. As the "before" photo I had uploaded the pic on the above post (I think my girth was 33 inch then and I weighed 68-69 kgs) and posted the below (current) photo (31 inch and 66 kg).

ChatGPT's comments were really flattering.

But more than everything, it's the diet that has turned into a highlight. Eating normal food, chicken 2 days at the most in 15 days, not many eggs (have only started taking one egg regularly may be 5 days a week). No protein supplementation.

Not calorie counting. Managing my calories on the basis of my perception of metabolic rate. For example, after reaching 31 inch stomach have slightly increased the food intake, which I again plan to lower a few days after Holi. This yoyoing has been an intrinsic part of my weight loss journey.

Yes, I am slightly more regular with weight training and hitting the gym at least 5 days a week from Feb onwards.

I am 54 years old, 5 foot 6 inches. To reinforce, this journey is entirely bookish and based on most accepted notions, such as protein intake at 1 gm per kg body weight (but I am not sure that I am getting even that), yet my muscle and strength loss has been marginal.

Also BTW, what do I think ChatGPT's body fat estimation power? I think when it is mentioning 13-15%, I should take it between 15 and 18%.

If you mean whey, you can look at Whole Truth whey isolate with 30gm protein per serving. I use it and it dissolves cleanly and taste is not bad given that it does not have any flavouring.
