Congratulations Ghodlur.

I was about to start this thread. I'm from Chennai and I might be transferred to Bengaluru starting Sep 1st week and my office will be in Adarsh Palm Retreat, Bellandur. I'm looking for a place around the area.
I'm fine with travelling 30-45 minutes one way. My wife and myself will be staying. We need a 2 bedroom apartment at a calm secure place. Any suggestions on where we should look for would be grately appreciated!

Also, I'm planning to take my motorcycle with me - it's not in my name. Should I get it registered in my name with KA? This assignment is currently for a year and it may extend.

Welcome to Bangalore.
About your bike, it is advisable to change it to KA registration. It will save anxious moments when cops are out looking for non KA vehicles.

Welcome to Bangalore.

Most of the advice/suggestions are good.
I do recommend you to make a choice based on your kids time schedule. We often tend to ignore the amount of time they have to commute. As your kid is moving to 8th grade, i am confident (s)he is also interested in other hobbies and stuff. So do look for larger apartment communities as they tend to have already many such things going on.

A 2 hour commute daily for kid is much bigger impact than a professional person commuting same amount of time.

Trust me that will not be a constraint. There are people from all over the country here in Bangalore. They get along fine without knowing any Kannada. Its of course helpful to know the local language, but your wife will not be restricted any way.

I moved from Mumbai to B'lore in June and chose HSR Layout. The decision was driven by a) proximity to school (did not find public transport as reliable and cheap compared with Mumbai) b) outdoor activities for my son since we don't have much of a social circle here c) daily commute time for me

It's been a good experience so far and language has not been an issue either. Only problem is the cool pleasant weather here, it's been making us Mumbaikars quite lazy

I work for Shell too and I live in Jakkur. The office is a 15mins drive with just two signals (interior route). If you are considering staying in Bangalore long term then for your childís education the best school around is Vidya Shilp. Itís quite a challenge though to secure a seat in Vidyashilp and hence got my sonís admission done at DPS North. Aster and Columbia Asia are two good hospitals in the vicinity.

Starting next year Vidyashilp relocates to a new campus off Doddaballapur Road near Nitte College at Yelahanka due to which a friend of mine is now relocating from RT Nagar to Yelahanka.

Default Relocating to Bangalore

Hello to my fellow Bhpians,
I am relocating to Bangalore from Chandigarh. Having done my MBBS and MS from Chandigarh, I recently got admission into Mch Urology at Institute of Nephro Urology at Victoria Hospital, Tharagupet, KR road. Have a few queries regarding relocating there.

1. I would like to stay as near to the hospital as possible considering my working hours. I searched a few places in areas like Chamarajpet and Chickpet but wasn't able to find any suitable place. Can you suggest any places in good locality for a 1 or 2 BHK apartment? Also I find 10 months rent as advance absolutely absurd. Is it the norm in Bangalore?

2. I have a 2013 registered diesel i20. My wife and parents can utilise the car here in Chandigarh but it is not absolutely necessary for them to have the car here in Chandigarh. Should I get a used car here in Bangalore? Any i10 or swift would work fine. The purpose of the car would just be utilitarian.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Bangalore.

Chamarajpet and Chickpet are very old areas of Bangalore. Why not look for areas around Jayanagar, Lalbagh, South end circle etc? I suggest these because they are not only good areas but have metro connectivity too. You can have metro till Chickpet and walk down to hospital.

If you ask me I would not suggest car in Bangalore if you are using it only for utilitarian purpose. You can try out for a few days various options to travel and maybe later think about the car.

Regarding the 10 month advance - yes it is the norm in Bangalore. Also when you vacate, the owners usually deduct a month's equivalent for painting / repairs.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
Will start searching in the areas suggested by you. Being a new person, I didn't know where to look and hence the futile search in those areas.

Basavanagudi, VV Puram, Gandhi bazaar, Shankarpuram are the areas adjacent to Victoria Hospital/BMC & pleasant to live in and can be considered as walking distance from Victoria/BMC/KIMS.

The area around the "National College Metro stop" (covers the above mentioned areas except Gandhibazaar) is your reference point for easy identification of decent places to stay close to your workplace IMO.

Also, you can consider buying a car after some time and depend on auto (or Ola/Uber) initially as they are pretty convenient.

Thank you Sir.
Finally found a great place in Jayanagar 1st Block. It's just 4.5 km from my workplace. Thanks to fellow Bhpians.

Next on the list, some high speed broadband. ACT/GCN/Hathway or Airtel V fiber?

On a side note, compared to Chandigarh, I see a lot of cars with Team Bhp stickers.

@D4d-maniac : welcome to Bangalore. Don't want to disappoint, but covering every km here takes lot more time to cover with the roads and jams. Maybe one reason you got to see more stickers. As the joke goes, you dress up little ones and board bus for kindergarten, they will reach school in time to write the 10th board exams.
Jokes apart, let us know if any queries. Pick up couple of kannada words.

I would stick to ACT (in general) compared to others listed even though it might be a tad expensive. I am not aware of the customer experience in that part of the city though.
