As an international student in Finland, my home work/gaming setup is very simple.
HP Omen 15 and a Xbox controller along with a Sweden beer mug (to drink water) . Right now I am playing some simulator games like X-Plane 11 and Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Yes its QHD. Its the LG 34WK500 with a resolution of 2560 x 1080 so two normal width windows can fit side by side very comfortably. Perfect for people who want to refer one window and work on another window.

While in Germany we started strict Work from Home starting Tuesday (17th March), this is how my Desk in one of my Bedroom look like:



I will get 24 Inch Monitor from my Office tomorrow.

Aaahh... I wish this thread had popped up a few months down the line when I think I would have a better setup!

Anyway here is my remote outpost right now. Has got the basics covered.



I dont usually work from home other than the evening calls stuff. But since recently have been working continuously like this.
Only then I realized why office chairs are called so. They are designed for longer duration sit-ins. This chair is comfortable for maybe 2hrs but nothing longer than that. I now have a pillow for additional bolstering.
Depending on how the situation changes, I probably have to make more refinements to this setup for the short-term.

Digressing from the topic. I work in the IT industry, have worked in the same for ~15yrs now though in advisory roles.
My observation is ~80% of the responses here seem to be from the IT folks in various roles. Never though, have I been able to comprehend the rationale for multiple monitors and laptops. Does it help and why? I've never owned a personal laptop because i don't have personal stuff to do save for making my resume and applying for jobs.
Majority of my browsing, reading is all done on my phone or on the iPad. Much of my life has involved traveling on work or work from home when around so never got accustomed to using speakers for calls, a dedicated workstation, etc. Just lie on the bed in a rather awkward position with stand up knees and laptop supported on my thighs. Does the work, saves the space, gives you comfort. Simply put.

Multiple Laptops: Company provided laptops usually have limitations on what sites you can access etc - social media / personal mail sites (gmail / yahoo etc) are typically blocked, so you need a 'personal' laptop.

Multiple Monitors: In office, I have seen this makes a lot of difference. Have a small 12.5 inch screen laptop, use it because the small size makes for easier carrying around. But the small screens mean strain on the eyes, having the supplemental monitors helps in better readability plus having extended desktop mode allows you to work on 2 screens - once you get the hang of using extended desktop, it becomes really useful

Nice thread. I have had an office at home for many years as I work long hours and western hours since we service International clients and I am in the office working as late as 10 - 11 PM and sometimes also as early as 6 AM onwards. Something that would not be possible if I rented or brought premises outside my house.

Also we have a large house in a very central commercial location and years ago we made the ground floor as an office and moved upstairs in a modern setup.

This new COVID threat has just messed up everything and is a nightmare but the WFH is not new and is the least of my concerns.

Could not resist putting up a pic of my latest buy ( The Bike and hence the deliberate picture however I have the privilege of literally staring at it from where I type )

There are trees and greenery and hence the view is good.

Also I do have a Map fetish and there are many all over my house. Pictured on the wall are two which I see all day long.

I think it depends on the nature of work being performed and the number of different windows/applications you have to work with simultaneously. In my case, I normally work with 4 applications open at the same time. 3 are for writing/debugging the code and the browser to look at the result and also to browse. Some applications may have multiple sub-windows or sub-sections open inside them.
Having only the (tiny) laptop screen means you are not only unable to see all the information in the sub-windows at the same time which means lots of scrolling - both vertically (easy with the mouse) and horizontally (not so easy because mouse scroll wheel only works vertically) and also you have to keep switching between multiple applications. Add email and instant messenger applications in the mix and you start losing focus.

Instead having multiple screens which can display different applications always helps. Also, unlike a laptop, a monitor can even be set-up in a portrait orientation if you have to look at long lines of information at a glance.

Once you get used to a multi-monitor setup you just can't go back to a single screen.

Does the work and is comfy for maybe 1hr at a stretch. Anything longer and you start shifting and readjusting your posture, sometimes, subconsciously. Before long you realize you have been subjecting your body to an unnatural posture for a long time and you need to take action or deal with aches

Here's my temporary setup in my study;
Personal Laptop, office laptop, printer, NAS drive, Bluetooth speaker and a bunch of my model kits to keep me company.

I don't usually work from home and this is only for the duration of the isolation period so the table is kinda cramped.

Well a lot depends on the pattern of the content. If you are primarily consuming the content like reading, watching videos then tablets, smartphones or a single monitor will suffice. However if you are creating content like writing material, researching or coding then multiple focus views aid in enhancing your productivity immensely.

To provide a very specific example, while coding we restrict the maximum column width to be used. So that the code readability doesn't suffer due to horizontal scrolling required .

In 19 years and I have never used more than 1 screen. Initially it was CRT monitor and later laptop screen. Started using LCD monitor few years back (Did not ask, manager got it for me). I don't use external keyboard and use laptop keyboard+monitor combo. I use mouse very minimum and prefer laptop track pad instead. I am right handed person but for mouse I use my left hand. In office I am surrounded by people who use 2 or more monitors.

A little unorthodox setup since most of my work is done at home, I tend to spend a lot of time in front of the computer so instead of a chair, I preferred getting a recliner which makes it much more comfortable for me to spend hours in front of the PC.
Instead of two monitors, I decided to hook up a 51" plasma and a 43" LED TV, which is pretty helpful for my nature of work and a 12.9 2nd gen iPad Pro for reference reading. The Nintendo Switch is also hooked to the plasma so when I'm waiting for an asset to download or some rendering to complete, I game a little bit on the switch.

Other accessories include:

• Razer Orbweaver Chroma for macros
• Anne Pro 2 RGB as the primary keyboard
• Logitech G910 Orion Spark as the secondary keyboard
• Logitech M570 as the secondary mouse
• Logitech G604 as the primary mouse

I can't work without a dual monitor setup. When I'm proof-reading Official Reviews, the image is on the left monitor and I'm editing the caption on the right monitor.

With reference to multiple laptops, corporate laptops come with a lot of restrictions. My best friend worked with a bank and his laptop didn't allow ANY software installation.

I have a sexy LazyBoy recliner too, but get a bit slow / too relaxed on it . Hence, I prefer to spend the full working day on the Herman-Miller Aeron only! Overpriced chair, but totally worth the investment considering I spend 9 - 10 hours on it everyday.
