Miller's Crossing

#2 is a great rise-and-fall story, spanning about 60 years. It takes its time to build. But the characters are all built very very well, and it keeps giving you enjoyment in repeated viewing. Starring Robert DeNiro & James Woods, Joe Pesci.

I forgot LA Confidential in the earlier list. It is not a 'Mafia'ish story per se, but it very much the quintessential good vs. bad movie about cops and gangsters. Russel Crowe is great in it. Also stars Kevin Spacey, Guy Pierce, Kim Basinger, Danny DeVito and quite a few others.

Neither of the three are full-blooded tommy-gun wielding gangster movies. For that, watch Scarface (DePalma movie starring Al Pacino & Michelle Pffiefer). One of the best rise-and-fall movies ever.

Road to Perdition starring Tom Hanks is another good movie set in the gangster era about a hitman on the run with his young son. Also Stars Paul Newman, Jude Law and Daniel Craig (for a bit).

Thanks Hydra!!

I will watch one of the above tommorow.

Hitman - Based on the game. Nice movie with lots of gun play. Some nice cars too (notably the S5 & G-Wagon).

We Own The Night - Robert Duvall, Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes. Really good!

movies I saw after subscribing to this thread

Hitman- not so great, good action sequences but nothing to write home about.

michael clayton- brilliant movie, george clooney's da man! must watch for legal thriller lovers, and for evryone else.

Three- plenty of luscious kelly brooke, but thats about it.

Mongol- the damn voiceover was in russian, and the subtitles in someother language, but I'm a sucker for historical movies, and a rabid admirer of genghis khan, so i sat and saw the whole thing, if you get the english subtitles, please watch it.

the last legion- complete let down, even aishwarya was a let down. swordplay was tolerable. historically, wildly innaccurate, with plenty of wishful thinking.

saw 'there will be blood' last night.
awesome acting but a very dull and confusing movie. I had lot of expectations from this movie but i was genuinely dissapointed. Ending was terrible. Background music is also very annoying. Direction was very weak, maybe director was thinking that everyone is a film expert.
The film tries hard to achieve character development but fails miserably in that department. I was not able to be emotionally connect with any character and thus i cant tolerate this movie as a mature movie.
i would rate it 6/10(because of the acting)

In pursuit of happyness
I didnt see the point of this movie. fate kept kicking will smith's character in nuts so long and so hard that it was painful to watch.

and...I must add, entirely predictable.
box office trash for pansies, and I feel like one for sitting down to watch it.

did this movie do well at the box office?

Miller's crossing
amazing movie. the sets, the acting, the plot, the background score, the razor sharp dialogues and one liners! simply brilliant.
Gabriel byrne's talent is not appreciated enough by the regular joe public.
thanks for the tip Hydrashok! I want more!

Black & White

Went for this movie as there was no other release today. Subhash "SHOWMAN" Ghai directs this one.

A story about how a suicide bomber comes to Delhi (15 days in advance to plan) to blow himself up on 15th August and the relations and emotions he goes through in those 15 days.

The lead pair is new and have done a pretty ok job. The guy has hardly a few lines in the movie while the girl is bubbly. Anil Kapoor delivers a rock star performance as the peace loving professor with his chirpy wife. Assorted characters abound in Chandni Chowk.

A lot of scenes of the Metro have been incorporated alongwith the busy life of Chandni Chowk.

A well meaning movie trying to deliver a message I would say but I am not too sure whether the message will be indeed understood. The end seems half baked.

Rating - 2.25 / 5.

Verdict - If you have nothing else to watch, go and check it out.

Pretty good watch. About the Russian Mob, set in London. Typical Cronenberg -- very, very, explicit and hardhitting violence. And quite a bit of explicit (for a mainstream movie) sex and male nudity. The movie has a very simple theme, but it has been presented well. Naomi Watts is her sweet self

If it is the con theme you're looking for:
- The Sting (Paul Newman, Robert Redford) This is the BEST of THE BEST. No other con movie can touch this!
- The Sting 2 (Jackie Gleason)
- The Grifters (John Cusack, Annette Bening, Anjelica Huston)
- Confidence (I-forgot-his-name, Dustin Hoffman, Rachel Weisz)
- Ladykillers (the 1950s original starring Peter Sellers, Alec Guinness, & others, and the 2004 remake with Tom Hanks)
- Matchstick Men (Nicholas Cage, Sam Rockwell)
- Ocean's 11, 12, 13 (but you knew that already, right?)
- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Michael Caine, Steve Martin)

There are more, but can't think of them off the top of my head
Saw Ladykillers yesterday. Was pretty good.

Wanted to watch "The Sting" but unfortunately the DVD rental guy did not have it.

Thanks Hydra.
