Well IMD has forecasted a yellow alert for Bangalore; citing rains from Wednesday (today) onwards. Over the next two days, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds will occur by evening or night. They are forecasting a normal May month with decent amount of rainfall.

Let's see how correct they turn out to be this time.

Close to 3 hours of rain in North Bangalore! And quite heavy. Hope no major traffic jams in the city.

Friends from Cochin and southwards. The news reports do not look good. All good there? All safe?

I read that SW monsoon is hitting Kerala today. A couple of days earlier than its nominal arrival date.

Re: The "It's raining in my city" Thread!

Grey cloudy skies in Bengaluru for the past 3-4 weeks now but hardly any rain! The last time it rained heavily was on 2nd June as the above post also shows. I hope IMDs above average monsoon prediction this year doesn't go the way of the exit poll predictions .

Ground water level hasn't improved an inch. Apartments still depend on tankers, with borewells dry. This doesn't bode well.

This has a couple of aspects to it. Just some rain will not raise ground water levels for a specific area. I think there has to be planned ground water recharge for a period of time. (People with more knowledge, please post in.)

Do these apartments have a BWSSB connection? Hopefully, with more rains, that situation will improve. But if these are like so many apartments in Bangalore where the builder hasn't bothered to get things in place, then the best option is for residents to self-organize, consult with a professional, and start implementing rainwater harvesting, waste-water reuse and things like that on a large scale. Will pay off for the even harder decades to come, with the water situation in Bangalore.

Re: The "It's raining in my city" Thread!

Govt spends crores on IMD, with dedicated satellites to their disposal, they still can't get the weather reports right. What a shame.

How do the BBC and other channels get it spot on?

Re: The "It's raining in my city" Thread!

For short term predictions you need doppler radars. I read that IMD in Bengaluru is getting those. You cannot predict near term and variations based just on satellite data. Don't think BBC or others are predicting our rains accurately! On my weather app, I see it's going to stop raining in next 2 hours when it's not even raining.

For last 2 days, it's raining more in Kodagu and other regions. Central Malnadu is still not getting heavy rains needed to flood streams and rivers. Hope it picks up and we don't see a repeat of last year.

Touching history, the BBC used to be closely allied with the British Meteorological Office, and that is where the forecasts came from. Then everything gets privatised: BBC has to buy it's forecasts, from Met office or other providers. Leaving that aside, forecasting for Northern Atlantic and Europe is child's play compared with forecasting for India. Relatively, that is: they are still using supercomputer modelling to do it.

Re: The "It's raining in my city" Thread!

Finally New Delhi gets its first proper shower. Started raining in the wee hours with a strong wind. Woke up to a pleasant morning and cold water in the taps

All was good until I saw this:
Delhi Airport roof collapse: 1 killed, 5 injured; flight operations at Terminal-1 severely hit
