Hope all folks are safe and have moved to safer, higher ground.
Yes it has been pretty heavy in city center and couple of other areas. Major lakes are full and they have started releasing some water already to not repeat 2015.

Hope rain stops a bit to give breather. Worried about people in ground floor, water has already inundated in many low areas.

Re: The "It's raining in my city" Thread!

Not at all sure that we are safe here. Water nearly came in this morning. We managed to secure the gate. Have just received a whole load of sand which is going to be bagged.

Wife is fed up with stress (we were flooded in 2015) and if she could find a suitable rental she wants to move out immediately. I can understand. Not sure that the cats would

People in Chennai - Stay safe. The rains are quite heavy I heard. The forecast is not encouraging as well. Hope the government machinery and corporation bodies act between now and the next day to ensure previous disaster isn’t repeated.

Getting ready for very bad weather. Locked in with sandbags, which will hopefully help to lock out the water, when if it rises outside the gate.

If not, we have moved a lot of stuff to our terrace from, and are prepared to evacuate to there. Which is what we built it for.

It's so disheartening to know that water levels have gone up and flooding inside the house (half a feet) while you can do nothing but just wait from afar.

Today's situation at out home in Chennai (Mandaveli)

Sympathy! We were lucky/prepared this time and kept the water out. An exhausting time with little sleep.

I wonder why administration is never prepared. Few more days and everything is forgotten. And the situation revisits next year. It's not just Chennai, even in Bangalore we are caught napping.

Yes, it's a farce. Monsoon preparations should be ongoing, not announced the previous month that storm drains and canals will be deleted.

It's also always said that road digging will stop: it never does

Both of your points are pertinent & absolutely in agreement with you

There's also one more side to add...
  • Every year there're 100's, if not 1000's, of new apartments popping
  • With that comes lesser & lesser land & more concrete
  • And the elevation & add to that, the roads are also getting higher & higher

With all these factors, the water has nowhere to go other than the newfound low level places that were once elevated. Like Thad says, I strongly agree that, no matter there's rain or not, just clear the Sembarambakkam, Poondi & Puzhal reservoirs along with so many other small lakes in ECR/OMR during the NEM season.

The administration has been preparing for decades. Sorry if I sound pessimistic, but many of the measures taken by governments around the world have led to this. They were fully aware of the consequences. Ancient tanks have slowly been encroached upon, forests and mountains denuded, basic civil engineering principles flouted. Why? You can draw your own conclusions.

Re: The "It's raining in my city" Thread!

Trying to avoid party stuff, but, one administration has succeeded in letting water out of lakes without submerging part of the city; another administration failed. It is a feather in the cap of those who got it right. Just one thing I do wonder is why this is in the hands of politicians at all, rather than qualified engineers!

But I do agree with aargee that so much more needs to be done, to prevent encroachment, maintain existing water bodies, and control development.

Apparently this city one had hundreds of lakes. Almost all of them built over now. That is history, but more thought should be given to future.

CHIKKAMAGALURU, KARNATAKA

Rains are never a problem for us in this part of the country. We have got used to incessant wet spells and have learnt to manage our lives around it.

However, unseasonal and unconventional rains put us off, like everywhere. The past week has been one of rains, chills and chaos. Of particular concern to me is the rainfall that started yesterday night and is refusing to stop. It came with a few strikes of thunder and lightning and martyred a transformer responsible for the power supply in my neighborhood. This happened around 10.30pm. With no solution in sight till now, I am gearing up for another night of darkness.
