Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

My children (aged 4 and 6) are not getting much time in sunlight due to the current Covid related restrictions. Is it safe to give them Vitamin-D supplements without checking, or are there any problems associated with having too much Vitamin D? If there are no significant risks, I would like to avoid the hassle/risk of drawing blood.

Hello
My office boy seems to have some kidney stones, is there anyone here who could have a look at his reports and suggest ? All my doctor friends are Ortho/Cardio hence the query here.

Hi Folks, I am a dermatologist based in Hyderabad. Am a second gen dermatologist, my father too was an eminent dermatologist of the state. I will be happy to give any skin related advice to forum members. Please feel free to ask.
Best wishes

I need some information on aortic aneurysm surgery. If there are cardiologists and related surgeons, please do let me know.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

So I broke off lower left second last molar (chipped off) mid-to-end December. Due to Omicron fear, did not visit a dentist (did not know of any good ones in Chandigarh either). Everything was fine but since yesterday it has started paining and I could not sleep yesterday night (slept for 2 hours). Had a throbbing pain and the bottom of the tooth (bottom of jaw / cheekbone) also felt sensitive when touched from outside the face. Today morning called up an old dentist doctor I knew from Delhi and he said most likely there is infection below the tooth. Asked me to get started with Augmentin 625 and Zerodol-SP twice day, along with Pantocid once before meal. During the day, there was gradual swelling and now the side of the face has a slight swell as if I am holding a piece of toffee inside the mouth. Looks like an abscess. I was planning to visit Delhi next week and consult with the dentist but he is not available. And google says that abscess should be treated as early as possible.

So am looking for inputs here from fellow dentist BHPians:
1) Any recommendation for a good dentist in Chandigarh
2) I have heard about incision being made to drain out the abscess. Is this a must (am scared of incision & stitches) or could it be done via a root canal treatment (fix the tooth and drain out the liquid build-up)
3) Should I complete the 5 day course and then consult the dentist in Delhi (once he is available) or that could cause more damage and I should get RCT done immediately

Don't have any fever and swelling is limited to lower left side of the face only.

At the moment there is no pain, just a slight discomfort which I am attributing to the stretching of the cheek skin tissue (maybe the painkiller and antibiotic is working). Apart from the medicine I am doing warm water saline gargles.

Thanks,
S

Go to Dr. Gaurav Malik in CHD> you can google his info. You may give my ref. Dr. Tejas Kothari, ex Straumann, India.

Can be done. But please don't dictate treatment plans to a doctor. He has more knowledge and experience.

It's common sense. Why would you want to have an infectious abscess in your body? Get it out immediately.

Thank you for your inputs and reference Dr. Tejas. Would help for future and to other BHPians in Chandigarh.

Today morning when I got up, the swelling was more than last night. Had not had a chance to check TBHP yet, but got a dentist recommendation from a colleague on WhatsApp. Got an appointment for evening, doctor did x-ray and told that it is going to need root canal treatment to drain out some of the infection (pus) and repair the tooth. Would require 3-4 sittings since it is involving infection. I asked for the option of incision (had kind of mentally prepared myself that if it is needed, it is needed) but doctor said it would not be needed, we would drain most out through the root canal and rest would be cleansed by the body internally. He cleaned it out and packed it lightly with some medicine paste (which he told me to remove if it gets painful during the night).

In a surprising turn of events, the doctor said I would not need anesthesia since it (the infected tooth) was dead. I was surprised to hear it that I would get RCT done without anesthesia but there was absolutely no pain during the first session I had today. The fact that I was already on painkiller and antibiotic might have helped but I was surprised/impressed that we got an RCT done without anesthesia.

Cheers,
S

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Went to a dentist for filling some cavities for our 7 year old (minor ones on the outside). The Doc insisted on administering a local Anesthetic. Is it really needed? We had a more tough procedure done last week and it was done without using one. Our son is very co-operative and goes through the ordeal without any fuss so its not as if the anesthetic helps. But this time around, the doc insisted.

Wife feels its just to extract insurance money (this is in Canada btw) and is seriously considering switching the dentist. I don't think this is such a big deal and the doc seems to be competent otherwise. Hearing an opinion from an expert would really help?

PS: Our son also seems to encounter a lot of cavities, although mostly in the milk teeth. He has good/healthy home food 99% of the time, and very few sweets. And yet the cavities somehow seem to crop up every few months. Any tips or suggestions ?

If your son suffers from pain during the procedure, you may sue the doctor. If your son moves because of the pain, and the instrument hits somewhere else, you will still sue the doctor. So, the doctor, who would want to stay clear of all possible medicolegal aspects, would want to administer a local anaesthetic like Lignocaine, so your son remains pain free.

You will need a Lignocaine Test dose to be administered prior to the procedure.

In India, most insurance companies do not consider procedures under local anaesthesia eligible for claim. They are all minor procedures.

I recall the horror and agony of fillings without anaesthesia. I don't wish it on anyone.

My lower right molar tooth has a crack on the top. I don't experience much pain except when chewing where I feel some pain (due to the upper molar touching the lower molar). I visited the dentist and he has suggested either to go for a dental implant or bridge (with 3 teeth).

Is there any alternate method to save my tooth ? I would like to go for the implant or bridge only as the last option. In that case, which is the safer method ?

Your suggestions would be very much helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Is it safe to take ketoconazole 200mg tablets for ten days? I went to a derma yesterday for my dandruff ridden, red and itchy scalp and she prescribed me this tablet which is scaring me,
an ointment called Onabet SD for scalp, and a shampoo called Salisia KT.
I asked her clearly if I really need the tablets and she dismissed them as not a big deal. After buying the tablets I see that they have a warning about hepatic toxicity and that patients should be informed of the risk.. this is something which she did not despite me asking her.
My dandruff is not terrible or an emergency, I have had seasonal problems for years which would usually be fixed by using nizral for a couple of weeks, I don't feel great about taking what seems to be a serious anti fungal medicine.

Not a doctor, so no comments on medications. After treatment, may I suggest using Baidyanath Maha Bhringaraj oil. It is a non drip and non sticky oil. The base is til oil with many more herbs with no added preservatives or synthetic additives. In a world of dubious ayurvedic products this one truly stands out. Buy from a shop if possible or order directly from their site. Buy powder shampoo consisting of shikakai, multani mitti and more(without any preservative and synthetic additives of any kind).

I am a practicing Prosthodontist so i can advise you on this. You seem to have a vertical fracture in your molar. If the fracture goes deep enough to the roots, sadly there is not much that can be done to save the tooth.
You may have to get it extracted and replaced with a bridge or implant. An implant is undoubtedly a better option than a bridge.

I would suggest just go ahead with the solution and shampoo which should work just fine to clear the dandruff. We have used Ketoconazole extensively orally in patients and it is quiet safe. In my 20 year experience no hepatotoxicity so far. But a drug is a drug and behave differently in different people. Best is use the application and shampoo for now.
Hope this helps.
