Samuari, I agree that the lense matters the most. I have a 5D but with Sigma 170-500 I have not been able to take very sharp pictures. I am thinking of swapping it with an affordable alternative and seriously considering Canon 100-400 + 1.4X adopter.

You need to push ISO very high in this case. 100-400 is f4.5-5.6 as standard. So it'll be 140 mm - 560 mm and f stop will go to 6.7 - 8.
560 mm at f8 and lens collar sitting on the tripod won't allow you to use lower ISO.

Check out with regular bird photographers before going ahead with your purchase.
