Buying a canon 100-400 is a very good decision. As this is a L series lens...the results will be top notch. From what I have read from the reviews using any kind of teleconverters on this lens will lead to a drastic decrease in quality.

Even I had 100-400 in my list0 but because of budget constraits settling for a Sigma 150-500 OS. Will be buying it in the coming week

Hope this helps!

Not really. One just needs to invest properly. I have seen result from Canon's 2X. There's nothing to complain.

Ummm I would beg to differ a little bit here. I had Canon 2x converter and the image quality does degrade a lot, even at f11 and more. I was not much into birding and hence sold it off. I used it with 70-200 f2.8 so can't say how it behaves with a prime. Have a 1.4x too and that is much more better behaved than the 2x. Another issue with TC's is that the focusing speed reduces a lot. [BTW, should these equipment discussions be moved to the DSLR thread?]

For primes lenses a TC would be a good investment but for a zoom like the canon 100-400 L IS it would be risky as there would be loss of sharpness at the tele end. As Kaushik rightly said focusing isn't fast at all. If you shooting action wildlife/birds the least you would expect from your telephoto would be to focus fast.

2X for the 100-400 is a no no but 1.4 x will help on the reach and provided you have good light, shooting at f8 u can get decent snaps.

Plus i don't think it will auto focus (100-400 has f 5.6 at tele end) unless you are not using 1D series.

Thanks

After watching lots of bird activity in the garden yesterday morning, I tried to capture some of them today morning at the same time. Zip, zilch, nada! Not one of the birds made an appearance today. Must be the monday morning blues. So I shot some landscape instead.

Ah! the fun of using double negatives... Tell me why it won't auto-focus in 1D series?
