Re: The Writing instruments thread

So I have this one now! The Waterman Expert ball point. I call it the affordable version of the Montblanc meisterstück! It holds very solid in the hand and I feel it has a balanced weight!

Just stumbled on this thread and saw the question. Surprising what one can find on T-BHP. I was actually restoring this very same pen yesterday and based on the pictures, it is definitely original. Heavy to use though, especially when posted. Un-posted, it's fairly alright. Mine has unfortunately developed a problem wherein the cartridge doesn't seem to sit flush. Do let me know if you're facing this issue as well. A handsome pen nonetheless.

Re: The Writing instruments thread

I use the Meisterstück LeGrand ball point most of the time, the M fountain pen when ever I can find paper that will actually allow me to use it, and the monstrous Rudyard Kipling homage edition isn't used much - I bought it cause I love Rudyard Kipling and they pen has a part of his poem "if" engraved on it.

Re: The Writing instruments thread

So glad I discovered this thread. The love of pens runs in my Mother's side of family and it has come to me.

Having owned the ubitquitous Cross, Sheaffer, Parker and Lamy ball pens only to store them away in their boxes as they look a bit ostentatious at the work place where most use disposable ball point pens. Plus I hate lending these pens and it's rather difficult to say no to a colleague. A theft would be heartbreaking!

So, after many decades after I finished school I recently rediscovered the joys of owning and writing with a fountain pen and purchased a Lamy Aion to begin with. Only due to my assignments some of which are required to be hand written not typed on a computer keyboard. It is funny that how we hail the advent of technology in our lives and decades later hanker for the old stuff and old ways of doing things. The examples in my life have been analog automatic watches for time, LPs/record players and cassette tapes/tape decks for music, fountain pens for writing and lastly 35mm film for my SLR cameras. Well back to the future.

On my wish list is the Lamy 2000 (soon), a Pilot Metropolitan (soon) and the Mont Blanc Meisterstuck 146 or a 145 if the wife ever approves.

Re: The Writing instruments thread

My work involves quite a lot of writing with a pen, and I figured out if I have to write non stop for hours on end, why make it a mundane experience?

My love for fountain pens is an acquired taste. Owing to long study hours in college, I used to buy fountain pens every few months to keep things fresh and interesting (nerdo 🤓 spotted) !! These were usually run of the mill fountain pens : the parkers and camlins of local stationary shops.

My first experience with a proper fountain was with the Lamy Safari, college time itself. The writing experience that it offered was unmatched, and I still prefer the Lamy experience to some of the more expensive pens.
I also own a Sheaffer 100, a Waterman Hemisphere Dlx CT, a TWSBI Eco, and quite a few pens from the Pilot Metropolitan Animal collection.

I have dozens of cheap fountain pens also (for work mostly) , many don't even deserve mention. Most of them I lose within a few weeks and reorder. But I have bought some Gold Leaf Jinhao fountain pens that are knock offs of some popular brands. Although the body gives these cheap pens away, some of my Gold Leafs have surprisingly great nibs. I'll be sharing pics of my collection soon.

Also, inks. Another dimension altogether. Looking forward to sharing my collection and observations with fellow nib enthusiasts here!!

Re: The Writing instruments thread

Wonderful to come across this thread. I have these 2 Montblanc Fountain Pens. They have gone to the HO under the nib exchange program and should be back in my hands by January 2021.
Both are Montblanc Meisterstuck special edition pens.
One is a Le Petit Doue Classique Special Edition.
The other is a Around the World in 80 Days Jules Verne Legrand Special Edition.

The second pic is of the special elusive Montblanc Meisterstuck 149 Calligraphy. This is a super elusive pen and we were able to locate a couple of brand new examples after a long and hard search. This too is on its way to me and should be here by January.

Along with these I have a few different colour inks in some simple and some special editions.

I was always fond of fountain pens. Always limited myself upto a Parker at max. I used to lust after a Rs.7000/- Waterman when I was a kid knowing that we could not afford it back then.
Very happy to continue this love of mine with fountain pens with these beauties.

Will post some more pics once the pens are back after the nib exchange.

Can you please tell us more about this program and how one can go about getting their nibs replaced.

I have a 'regular' Montblanc Meisterstuck given by my father and always felt I needed to get it 'serviced'.

Please contact your local Montblanc boutique or authorized reseller. They will guide you with whatever you need. They have a selection of nibs in test pens which you can try out and then decide which one you want.
By default Montblanc pens come with Medium size nibs now a days.

Re: The Writing instruments thread

Made another beautiful addition. This one is a revelation!
For the price it is a real gem of a pen. Smooth, decently wet and very very comfortable to use. It has fast become my goto pen for anything and everything.

The Pilot Custom 823 Medium 14K gold nib in Smoke black.

What a beauty! Japanese art and engineering at its value for money best!

Re: The Writing instruments thread

I have a couple of Sheaffer pens in need of service (?) if that's something that is usually done.

My son broke the nib of one and the other one which i kept as spare randomly leaks.

Checked with a reputed dealer here who says as per the company these pens are part of some vintage collection (no no, they are not that old) and so spares are not available.

Sent a mail to Sheaffer USA who asked me to contact their vendor here in India at Mumbai. But the listed number is wrong and they don't have an email id.

Can someone offer some advice?

Re: The Writing instruments thread

This is my collection of fountain pens. I'd acquired these over a course of the last 10 years. I had a passion for fountain pens in general as I am a teacher. But I don't think the people I cared about appreciated it very much. I thought of just sharing it in this Forum.

Re: The Writing instruments thread

Did not read the whole thread. I am sure it might have been said somewhere. But just for the benefit of users here I will repeat it again.

European Fountain Pens Medium nibs actually write too thick. So if you are starting out better start with a Fine nib. That is what we in India are used to. And also the ink won't bleed on the other side of the paper.

Japanese Fountain Pens are different. If you are going for them then go for Medium nibs. Their Fine nibs are almost like needle pointy thin.

American Fountain Pens are somewhere in between. I found Sheaffer 300 Medium nib just to be somewhere in between the Japanese Medium and European Medium.

And finally pay attention to the grip of the pen, where you hold the pen with fingers. Though steel/shiny ones look nice you want a plasticy kind of grip there. You need a good grip to write pages after pages without fatigue. Though I am not sure of anyone doing that nowadays.

Re: The Writing instruments thread

Team-BHP never stops to amaze and surprise me! What an amazing collection you guys have. Reminds me of my childhood, when starting to write with a pen in class 4th or 5th I had only 2 "papa approved" pens that he wanted me to use. One was a Luxor Pilot and another was fountain pen. I was made to write one page everyday during summer vacations to improve handwriting and speed.
Ironical, that being in IT, I don't even recall when was the last time I wrote one full line with a pen. But at the same same time I am glad that being a 90s kid, I grew-up in the era of love letters and not tinder.

Fernang is fantastic. There are no words to explain it.

In Trichy, there was a shop named Joseph Pen Corner that sold and serviced all kinds of vintage fountain pens.

Re: The Writing instruments thread

It is a wonderful thread. This is something that is vanishing from the society. I hope the newer generations keep using these and these stay alive. Fortunately, my son (class 11 student) uses a fountain pen for most of his writings (70-80 percent) and has got a small collection of old fountain pens thanks to benevolent friends.

Also, what fabulous collections people have. This page made me happy today.
