Re: A Guide: Eating out in Mangalore/Udupi/Manipal

My Mangalore visit was very eventful.Visited the below mentioned Restaurants

Lunch on 24th July

1,Woodlans Restaurant, which is next to Vinaya Hospital.Ordered the following

1, Chicken Sukka (Half)
2, Anjal Masala &
3, Zeera Rice

Chicken Sukka was mind blowing and so was Anjal Masala.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dinner on 24th was at Narayana Mess

1,Meals with Anjal Fry.Awesome to the core.Anjal fry was delicious.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lunch on 25th was at Abhiman Residency and ordered

1, Chicken Sukka
2, Pomphret Masala
3, Naan &
4, Dal Khichdi.

Pomphret fry failed to live up to the expectations.Chicken sukka was also very average.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dinner on 25th was also at Narayana Mess
1,Meals with Anjal Fry.Yummylicious.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lunch on 26th was at Manjas, car street.

It is on the lines of Narayana mess but the food is mind blowing.Ordered meals and Anjal fry.The fish was tastier than Narayana and this place is little on the hygienic side as compared to Narayana. The rates are at par with Narayana.
Had icecream at Ideal, which is near City center Mall.Delicious.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dinner on 26th.

I plan to visit Narayana mess as Manjas is open only for lunch.

Waseem.

Waseem Sir,

If you are deeply into seafood then I would highly recommend 'Gajalee' located near Kadri Park. Their seafood is excellent!

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Mangalore/Udupi/Manipal

Having spent now more than 2 years in Mangalore, here's a list of all the places that i frequent and some must-have dishes too.

Continental : Diesel Cafe at Balmatta.
Must-haves: Chilli Cheese toast, Pastas and Risottos and their Chocolate Mousse comes in a bowl the size of a cereal bowl. Good luck finishing that.
Service: Prompt, but more partial towards regular customers.

Burgers/Steaks: Froth-on-Top, Balmatta
Must-haves: Grilled Chicken Cheese Sandwich, Kheema Rice and they also serve a variety of Goan dishes as well.
Drinks: Only beer is served though.
Service/Ambiance: Top-Notch, ideal to go out with a large group.

Pure Vegetarian: Shiv Sagar at Bunts Hostel
Yes, it's the same chain that has an outlet at Churchgate, Bombay.
Must-haves: The Pav bhaji will definitely remind you of the Bombay Pav Bhaji.

G6/Mangala Hotel at Valencia.
Though their food isn't great , the best thing about them is that they have gigs almost every day of the week and every Wednesday they have Karaoke nights. A must-visit on Wednesday's with a large group.

Will add to this list as and when i visit more places in Mangalore. Till then, happy eating!

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Mangalore/Udupi/Manipal

Ive been in manipal for the last two years and was elated when i found this guide to eating around manipal/udupi/mangalore. The one thing that i really miss here is jalebis . Does anyone know a place where i can get good or even not so good jalebis? With the festive season i have this craving for last one week.

You can try Venkateshwara sweets or Parivar sweets in Udupi. Both are on the road going from the mosque to sanskrit colllege. I prefer Venkateshwara. You wont get it hot, fresh off the stove though. Parivar sweets has a branch in Manipal in the road behind the university building.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Mangalore/Udupi/Manipal

Cakes at Bon-bon. Try the Day N Night, mango fresh cream, or delroy.

Ice cream at Pabbas. Parfait is my favourite.

Narayana mess for Anjal fry. This is not meant for families.

Deepa comforts for Kane rava fry and anjal fry.

Abhiman at bunts hostel for Chicken ghee roast. If you can travel to Kundapur, you can try Chicken ghee roast there at Shettys luch home. If not Abhiman.

Chicken or Mutton ghee roast is an original Mangalorean dish. There are 4 places you can sample it: Shettys lunch home, Abhiman, Ocean pearl hotel or Maharaja.

The other dish unique to Mangalore is Kori Roti. This again you can try at Abhiman.

Sweets: Taj sweets at Hampankata. Try wheat ghee halwa. Its again a Mangalore special. Also you get the best jilebis here. The jilebis are really special here.

Kababs and Mughalia food at Royal treat or Mughal darbar. Try the mutton biryani here its great. The Kara kababs are also my favourite.

Haven't seen anything like that in Udupi.

Anupama Restaurant (Hotel Usha, Balmatta I think) in Mangalore was run by the late 'Kane' Mohandas Shetty, son of Tejappa Shetty who set up Shetty Lunch Home in Kundapura. He passed away in August this year. His family must be still running Anupama.

The other son Ravi Shetty runs Coast to Coast in Bangalore.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Mangalore/Udupi/Manipal

Many a new restaurants have cropped up in past few years in M'lore. The place has changed from a small coastal town to a city now. Heard good things about 'Froth on Top' and few other places.

I think we need to spread the net wide and add notable restaurants from Karkala, Moodubidre and Puttur also. I for one, stop for sure at 'padiwals' at Moodubidre and if i recall right it should be 'sagar'(They own the ocean pearl at M'lore) at Karkala. Both of them are good for vegetarian cuisine.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Mangalore/Udupi/Manipal

This thread came too late for me. My son studied and worked in Manipal 1997-2013, my daughter-in-law is from there, and grandson was born there. I was visiting Manipal at an average more than twice a year. They moved to Gurgaon in late 2013. Now chances of going there are very small.

Its easy to miss it, but you usually find a few people waiting for the bus here. The road on the left goes uphill diagonally towards Gangolli. Dont take that. Take the right turn and after about 200-300 metres and you would find a bar & restaurant (on left) called Annapurna or Aishwarya (dont remember the exact name). Its a large building and you wont miss it.

The ambience of this place is like a small village smalltime bar, with mainly locals. You can either sit outside or take the large cabins on one side of the bar. The fish here is very fresh and excellently prepared.
Did you happen to visit this place again? If so, please let us know the name of this place.

Are there any other beach side fish fry restaurants/dhabas on the coast from M'lore to Kundapur?
