Thank heavens Uthappa messed up in the Zimbabwe series. I don't think he is in contention.

I blame Dhoni for that. Just because we had him captaining all three sides we never had a reliable deputy who could do the job.

Just because Australia were so fortunate with Gilchrist, every other team now wants an attacking Wicket Keeping batsman losing the basic requirement of having safe WK. People do not realize that Gilly is one of a kind and there is not going to be another like him ever!

Here the comparisons of the role of the current Indian keeper to that of Gilly is unfair. Gilly wasn't the first keeper who could bat. Why he was revolutionary was that even while being a wicketkeeper, he also was a game changing batsman on his own, and one of the best batsmen of what was one of the greatest teams in the history of the game.
Here in the Indian team, we're not expecting a wicketkeeper who can bat oppositions out of matches on his own at all. Neither are we comparing him directly to Dhoni or expecting similar skills from him. But the current composition of the team is such that with five regular bowlers, a keeper needs to be responsible with the bat, and score some runs while at that. With already a long tail in a batting dominated era, we cannot carry a pure wicketkeeper for his keeping alone. Neither are our bowlers so effective that a pure keeper is a necessity.
A good wicketkeeper is necessary for a team like Pakistan who have the effective enough bowlers, and rely on the bowling to win them games. There, a good batsman who is shoddy with the gloves may actually put down many chances of dismissal. Not exactly so for our team. Maybe we need a good keeper to control the extras from Aaron and Ishant!

Re: The Cricket Thread

It is simple actually. If you are playing 5 bowlers, your top 4 should be solid batsmen. 5th should be some one who can change gears quickly but again proper batsman who can score big if needed. The wicketkeeper, needs to be a decent batsman and one bowler should be one who is almost a bowling all rounder.

"Talent" has come out to bat. Let's see if he can last longer than the edit window for this post

He's survived this first hurdle.

Now he has to ensure that we reach 375-400.

Re: The Cricket Thread

6 Overs
6 Maidens
0 Runs
4 Wickets

Axar Patel blows away SA "A" team in the 2nd unofficial. This, after a five wicket haul in the first innings and a 69 with the bat.

Frankly, he's the most over-rated spinner i've seen in a long time! He doesn't exactly give the ball a tweak, rather just rolls the ball.

Re: The Cricket Thread

He's not a spinner at all. But a good limited overs bowler nonetheless.

"Talent" has been awarded with the Arjuna award today!
After getting out, he could have easily taken a flight to Delhi and collected the award.

Shows how much value these awards hold.
Brilliant innings by Pujara today.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Sometimes, It does seem funny when No hit sharma was awarded the Arjuna award. Apt comparison. Both of them had talent and both of them were preferred over more talented/skilled people due to blinkered views of their superiors(Ekalavya/Karna were similarly not given chances to shine, but they did in the end)

Re: The Cricket Thread

After a day of play with wildly swinging fortunes, a situation similar to the first test of this series yet again but Sri Lankans will play the 4th innings this time!
Just hoping India can get to a decent defendable total and try to win this test. Kohli has to come good, he's been failing too many times and No-hit needs to become Ro-hit again

Even if we score 150 with the lead I don't see SL making 250 to win on this pitch.

Don't under estimate Nohit. He is the brightest talent we had in 100 years
