Rogue SMS's / text messages

I just got an SMS from the sender identified as "CONGRTS" and the content:

"00423662692193 I am Sofiya. I am in your city please call me now on"

Seem to be one of those scam sms's!

Call the number and get charged international calling charge and maybe an extra call charge also.

Has anyone else got any such sms?

I've not got any such messages, but even if I get one I would simply delete it. I treat any such communication and same as I would for spam emails...... straight into the trash. For all you know, confirming (dialing) back to the sender means that they know that this is a live contact, or else it can lead to a virus attack (have GPRS on my phone)

It could be sent by people involved in flesh trade. A random SMS, and if they get someone to respond it would improve their business. It also be a sting operation set up to trap people in solicit illegal trade.
Either way, best thing is to immediately delete the number, and report the incident to your service provider so they can do the needful.

Posted here to check if anyone else had received any such spam.

And no, I never call back! Would be mighty stupid in my part, if I did.

@Vivek: LOL! Good one.

Have you registered your number in the national Do Not Call registry?

Doesn't help!
I used to get SMS's when the elections were on and my post on my blog retaliating it turned out to be a campaign for the party! (And eventually I had to delete it!)

Usually, Spammers are never bothered about the DND registry and this includes Citibank! (I have lost count of the obscene words I have used to them!)

No, I have not.

Do you suggest I do? But then, the number of marketing calls are almost negligible now a days.

Not sure if not being reachable for close to 6 months got the number removed from any existing list.

Yeah- that probably got your number off the marketers "master list". I've registered on the DND registry and found it to be of some relief- I dont receive calls/SMSes from Airtel/most telemarketers. Some calls do come through - which I simply cancel - since I never answer calls from unknown numbers anyway since most of them turned out to be from marketers in the past!

I too registered on the DNC List and it was quite effective. I did receive some calls a few months after registering and I promptly lodged complaints with my service provider. Now there is absolute bliss. So please complain to your service provider if you get marketing calls after registering on the DNC list.

I however think that the DNC list does not apply to SMSes and the number of marketing SMSes is increasing.

Cheers,

Mrs X: I knew it all along Dear, just kidding with You (phew! what a relief).

The only calls that I get now are from Citibank, since our company recently moved the salary accounts to them, and those are few and far in between.

With few calls, I now find myself telling the marketing call personnel that I am not interested and thanking him for the call!!! Just realized that I am doing this without even giving it a thought!

Previously I used to get so worked up, for no reason, when I get these marketing calls.

That's ridiculous, why would a butcher send you such messages?
