Re: Engine trouble in Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton EDIT: Turbo replaced under warranty

Safari TCIC Turbo costed Rs. 33K - Including labour and fitting in an outside garage.
Laura 1.9PD Turbo costed Rs. 75K - Including Labour and fitting in an outside garage. It costed Rs. 1.3L with Intercooler in ASS.

Both are outside garage prices are with kaccha bill.

Re: Engine trouble in Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton EDIT: Turbo replaced under warranty

Replaced a Swift Diesel Turbo recently and costed Rs 18 K. Mileage of 60000 Km. Maruti Service Masters was the service station.

The Rexton case is awful. It plainly goes out of my list for a buy. Pity, I was seriously considering owning one.

Well, well, that's good to hear. I hope it stays that way for a long time to come. Thanks .anshuman for bringing out this story as well as the update.

I will be watching out keenly before notching up Rexton on my 'next car' shortlist.

After reading the posts in the Thread and having countless number of personal experiences, I feel our nation is a nation of escalations. We are a democracy on paper, but a monarchy by actual process. Can't believe that Anand Mahindra (or people reporting to him) has to get involved to fix the issue with one car, that too their premium offering.

I feel every company in India need to have a new post added, incidentally that will also be called CEO - Chief Escalation Officer

It is true with many of the services availed in our country, be it automotive, or banking, or home appliances. One good thing with automotive sector is, QUICK RESPONSE. If issue escalates, like this instance immediate attention is ensured. But when it goes to banking or home appliances, escalation has little role per my experience.

Thanks to Mahindra to consider this problem like war front and as per one of the internal sources, TBHP thread had given heavy weightage and become a hot topic in their meeting! Thanks to TBHP team for making such prestigious reputation. Cheers!

Though I'm happy that through t-bhp one car lover's problem got solved, I think this is an even serious issue. 'Unless Anand Mahindra tells us to, we won't solve your problem or take it seriously', that's what Mahindra is all about is what this thread tells me.

I feel bad about those non-members who love their cars equally dearly however don't have t-bhp to put pressure on these idiots who would promise you the moon while selling a product but won't budge unless the company Chairman tells them to.

The only thing that I've learned from umpteen such threads is that if I have to buy a Mahindra or Tata, that better be my second vehicle, I better have enough time (if not money) to spend on it and should be prepared to get shocked in the most unimaginable way possible, which shouldn't actually be shocking since I bought something from the biggest shockers of all (if Skoda isn't offended by this please).

1.3 L for a turbo break-down? Two such break-downs in 2/3 years and all the diesel running cost advantage will be negated. It will be cheaper to run a petrol City/Civic.

Turbo's hardly fail early "if" they are looked after properly. They easily last for 1 lakh+ kms without needing any attention. All you need to do is put the right amount of oil and don't prolong oil change intervals. I have seen an innova @ 4,50,000 kms running on stock turbo. What you are projecting about 2 turbo failures in 2/3 years, i presume, is the worst case scenario, correct?

In this Rexton case, it was a manufacturing defect!

The Laura is known to have early turbo failures (especially early units). I had the first failure at 31,000 kms and it was repaired within warranty .The second failure was at 68,000 units and this was repaired outside for about Rs. 75,000.

The Safari TCIC Turbo needed to be replaced around 160,000 kms - So that is quite fine. I believe the Safari Tubro would have lasted atleast 250,000 kms with any other driver, I tended to race the engine hard and did not bother to idle the engine before shut down in the Safari - the turbo anyways was just about Rs. 33,000 of so.

Precisely.

Also Anshuman, this thread should now be closed and it could be reopened as the mother thread for all Rexton issues, if and when reported.

Couldn't agree with you more. It's quite unfortunate though. Have always had to escalate the matter to the top most authorities to get issues fixed...be it maruti, tata motors, Hyundai or Mahindra, my experience is the same...the degree of responsiveness varies though.

The latest was my buying experience with Mahindra wherein the company dealership- NBS tried to hustle a showroom display Rexton to me. Fortunately during one of the many trips to the dealership, my paranoia led me to note the engine, chassis no of this display vehicle and when I got the engine no etc details from the sales guy, it matched! It took an email to Mr. Mahindra to get the dealer activated and thereafter things fell in place.

Apart from this, my vehicle (like a few others), had alignment and balancing problems and I had a tough time getting this resolved as well.
After getting an appointment for getting this fixed, when I landed at the NBS' workshop, i had to wait for over an hour for the RM. Later I was informed that their balancing and alignment machine was out of order and that I will get the car the next day.

I fired those guys and got my RM changed and shifted to Infinity. There too the machine was out of order..though they didn't inform this to me.

Apparently on the pretext of understanding the problem and test driving the vehicle, (they were quite adamant to not allow me to go for the test drive) , they were getting this done from a nearby tyre shop! I came to know this as the TD lasted 45 mins and I was told the driver had gone till BKC (from andheri east) but when the car came back, the problem was resolved and the car had clocked just 6 km.

In another week I shall be going for my first service and hope I'm not in store for any more rude shocks. Having said that, I'm extremely satisfied with the vehicle and no issues so far...hope it stays that ways!

Oh oh! Another bad experience by a Rexton customer. So far there are only two or three Rexton owners here in T-BHP and already we are hearing horror stories. All this even before an official test drive and review is done.

Sad to see a nice and capable vehicle being tarnished due to unprofessional dealers and ASCs.

I'm extra sad as I am (was?!) seriously contemplating on RX7 as it was ticking lot of boxes for me. Well, I'll wait for couple of months to see if there's any improvement. As such I'm mentally prepared to let this go and wait for another ideal vehicle. Lets see if Mahindra really 'rise' and pull me in!

Yes, if it is a small issue such as plumbing, but replacing the bearings are a tricky job and best left to manufacturers' authorised shop as they have the requisite testing tools.

Fiat and MUL have similar Turbos but not the same IMO, though the engine is the same, the ECM and other electronics are different.

My Take:

Actually though service center should have their own allignment equipment, it is quite common for them to get the work done outside either due to their machine not working at a point of time or if they have a high amount of load. Has happened to me a few times with various brands and I wouldn't even know how and where it was done at other times.

Yep we would hope for them to be transparent about this, but they rarely are and actually if one thinks about it, we would not really look at them in good light if we knew that they get the allignment and balancing done outside and further charge a higher rate from us so can't blame them hiding this fact from us.

Actually Infinity worked to get your issue solved (though they hid how they were going to do it) and valued your time while NBS did not value it and were prepared to call you on another day.
