Re: Indica Vista - list of Known problems

One short update:

Today visited Phoenix Tata Motors Service Centre, Katraj Pune.
I talked to the Service supervisor about the peculiar problem I am facing with my Vista TDI. The head mechanic had a longish test drive and we tried to simulate the 5th gear, Gear shift lever vibration on low rpms.

Please note that my car is now functioning smoothly only in 5th gear only when driven 95 kmph! and above with A/c on and with A/c off the minimum speed in 5th gear I can drive smoothly without any vibration is 85 kmph!. Both these speeds lend my vehicles fifth gear useless on Indian roads. Please note here that Indica Vista TDI engine generates max. torque at 2500 rpm. As soon as my engine rpm falls below 2500 rpm in fifth gear the gear stick vibration creeps in and continues till I maintain engine rpm above 2500 which is highly impractical and also takes a toll on the fuel economy of the vehicle.

As of now my present driving style is- I use 4th gear to accelerate the vehicle upto 110 kms/hr and then shift to fifth gear. As soon as I shift to fifth gear the engine rpm falls down and if it falls below 2500 rpm I cannot touch my accelerator pedal, because the moment I press the accelerator pedal gear shift lever vibrations creep in and will vibrate endlessly. So I will coast in fifth gear till the speed falls down and again shift to 4th gear and repeat the process. I have to repeat this process throughout the day.

Imagine the thought of repeating the above process in a 16 hour drive on highway. Its really irritating and lending the fifth gear nearly useless on highway. My fuel economy has fallen below 15 kmpl.

Off late I have been doubting the root cause of the problem to not be of the gearbox but of the engine not able to take load in fifth gear at lower rpms below max torque rpm of 2500.

The head mechanic at Phoenix Tata motors agreed there is a problem but the only answer he had was that Tata Vista TDI has this inherent problem

On pushing him, the only truthful comment he said was that I can trying all injector checking and other stuff but there would not be any improvement in the performance

I have been told to live with the problem. This is the third Tata ASS I have visited and returned without a solution to the problem.

Re: Indica Vista - list of Known problems

My indica turbo had a similar vibration of the gearbox, and two workshops tried to pass if off claiming its natural, and happens with age. Finally got it resolved by a mytvs workshop as part of my 100K service where a lot of things were changed, and nothing specific was done towards this particular issue. Perhaps you need to ask around and find a good tata specialist (try asking a cabbie/other members here). clearly this is beyond the capabilities of your FNG/TASC

@greenhorn could you please elaborate as much as possible what were the things changed that led to resolution of the dreaded gear stick problem. Your information will give me a direction to work on. Yes as you said I am collecting the Indica expert mechanic information from the cabbies. Thanks

Re: Indica Vista - list of Known problems

For guys like me who are still suffering from Gear shift lever vibrations. I have found one more way which can be tried to solve the problem before opening up the gearbox.

Re: Indica Vista - list of Known problems

Hi Guys

Looking for some expert advise

I own a 2008 Indica Vista Safire Petrol, a Fiat 1172 cc engine with 65 PS power

I am a wanna be DIY guy and was looking up various YouTube channels for DIY car maitainace stuff

Came across Periodic MAF sensor cleaning and EGR vale and manifold cleaning

And I thought to check out the same in my car, and what do I find, I find no MAF sensor or any EGR intake. I am not able to locate it

Am scratching my head, since so little information is available on this model on th net

Can you expert advise, I am assuming either this is to do with the fact that this model, the 2008 one were BS 3 and might not mandate a EGR and maybe the MAF sensor is tucked somewhere internal Or I am still too much of a noob to find it

Anyway, any expert help will be appreciated

The EGR is present in the diesel engines. In the Fiat powered diesels, the issue of EGR valve clogging is quite common and a clean-up, approx an hour's worth of good old effort, sorts out the problem.
The first signs of a clogged EGR valve in the diesel are an increased amount of black smoke in the exhaust & a commensurate drop in fuel efficiency.

Re: Indica Vista - list of Known problems

My Father-in-Law owns a 2010 Vista Quadrajet that has done around 1,55,000 kms now and hasn't given him any major problems till date (even after his rash driving and countless belly scrapes )

Off late, the car had a minor issue - it wouldn't crank on the first attempt, especially in the mornings. Second attempt would make it come to life. My FIL said that the fuel line has taken in air and that was causing the issue. So we decided to do a little DIY to remove the air bubbles from the fuel filter.

Indica Vista - list of Known problems-20210919_150017.jpg

We simply loosened the nipple on the fuel filter using a 12 mm ring spanner. After this, I put on the ignition to get the fuel pump to start and squirt out diesel from the loose nipple. This was followed by tightening the nipple and it worked like a charm! The car starts on the first attempt now.

The air may have entered through this joint which appears to be leaking as we found oil drops right beneath it.
Plan to get it looked at, at our FNG this week.

In my Indica Vista TDI a leaking fuel pump bolt caused fuel to spill on my alternator causing premature wear of alternator slip rings and alternator to fail.
First symptom was that my tachometer was not working. Being a new battery never faced starting issues but after a week the car stalled midway onroad.

Took it to authorized TVS lucas shop. He quoted nearly 10k for brand new alternator and another 1.5k he would have taken for labour charges. I knew he was ripping me off, told him to replace only the slip rings for which total including labour charged Rs 3800. I bet same work would have been done in 2k at specialised local alternator shop. But car being immobile settled for it.
