He is right and I mentioned you are right too when you say ambient temperature doesn't matter.
But, we should understand one important aspect when we compare 0w20 with 15w40, Base oil.
While the 0w20 is synthetic, 15w40 is pure mineral. Comparing synthetic oil with mineral oil is incorrect.

Provided a 0w20 and a 15w40 has same base oil, 15w40 will out perform on every test for the hot climate condition, whereas 0w20 will just meet the requirements.

We should take the learnings from West with a pinch of salt, as unfortunately, they will see -15 deg C and +35 deg C in an year. Previously, they had different multigrade oils for very cold temp and very hot temp. But with acceptance of high cost of synthetic oil and move towards more fuel efficient oils, they have an option of using a 5w20 throughout the year. But, in hot summer of India, I will beat this oil with a cheap 15w40 on every testing parameter.
A comparison:
5w20, price 1000 per liter, change interval of 10,000 km, just meets specification.
15w40, price 300 per liter, change interval of 15,000 km, superceeds testing specifications.

Imagine the cut to cut competition we have between various car manufacturers, and the worldwide known fact that 0w20 is good enough and still provides better fuel efficiency of ~2%, we still do not see car manufacturers in India shifting to 0w20 throughout their stable.

There is no harm in going to 0w from 5w to the engine, but I cannot say about its impact on your pocket.

Your second question has the answer to bobistheoilguy assumption. They should be used right? Especially with air cooled engines we need the fast heat transfer properties of 0w20, but alas it is not the case. Thick oils like w40 or w50 (with rich additives) protect better than thin w20 oils (which cannot have a high additive content).

Also, wet clutch bikes cannot have high friction reducing additives otherwise clutch will start slipping.

The car in question is a w212 e 350 cdi, 145k on the clock, looking at changing the oil outside the Mercedes dealership this time, wanted to check what oil do people use for their cars with DPF?

My other car is a cruze where I use Motul Xcess 8100. Merc uses some Mobil 1 0w30 co branded oil that’s not available outside in Kerala.

Shell Ultra ECT 0w30 or Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 are available on Amazon and Shell should be easily available in Shell bunks / oil stores in Kerala.

Mobil 1 in 0w30 grade is not available and there are no shell pumps in Kerala unfortunately, anything from Caltec or liquimoly?

Any good 5w30 - Shell HX8 has so far made my Endeavour (newer, fine - but similar sized CRDI engine) run butter smooth.

If you don't mind a much higher cost because of the whats it, 9 litre oil fill in the fortuner, get Castrol Edge LL 5w30 or 5w40 and enjoy life. Far and away the best oil on the Indian market.

Thanks, its run 5W30 all its life, but after buying it a month ago, reading the manual, and a lot of this thread, a 5W40 seems more appropriate IMO, summers are hot.

I just changed all the oils, the new 5W40 will have to wait for another 5-10K Kms.

Is Castrol Edge LL really better than Amsoil 5W40?

It is a much more recent formulation than the Amsoil formulations available in the Indian market (not that it matters for an older generation of engine like the d4d) and the base oils are of the highest grade. Amsoil has an excellent additive package so you can buy that too.

Note - Your Fortuner will be just as happy on standard Toyota oil if changed at the 5k mark or so.

I don't suggest any injector cleaner or flushes, your engine isn't a toilet.

You can add diesel additives from STP or Amsoil - they are just cetane boosters, and some additional additives if you like, once every two or three tank fills.

The package was delivered today, but the specification says 5W-30 ACEA C2 instead of ACEA A5/B5.

I read that ACEA C class oils are for engines with DPF. Can I use C2 instead of A5/B5? Is that Okay?

Sourced Shell Helix HX5 CH4 15w-40 for my Verna CRDI 2014 model. For 5 Ltrs it costed me just Rs1400 although shopkeeper said that this is old print and new one has got costlier to Rs1600, still I find it very cheap.

Seek reviews if it's the right oil as I saw on this post that Hyundai ASC use same oil in drums.
