oil gurus,

What are the repercussions of using an API SN only rated engine oil on a diesel engine ?

Very challenging question indeed.

Not sure about specifics, SN oils are not tested for its soot-holding or anti-soot problems/phenomenon as a basic function of diesel engine oils.

If one is referring to light duty diesels like Maruti/SUV's etc an alternative to owner manual recommendation may be European ACEA spec'ed oils like A3B4, C3 etc.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

I see, what if the vehicle has already run for about 5000 kms? Any long term and short term damages expected?

For specifics, it is a combo of amsoil signature series 5w30 A5/B5 API SN and the multi jet diesel.

ACEA A5/B5 is rated for light duty petrol (A5 spec) as well as diesel (B5 spec) engines. Your MJD will do very well on it.

As per post above, your diesel is in good hand with Euro ACEA B5 (diesel spec'ed) oil.
You can go on as per Maruti/Amsoil recommendations, no worry.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Can anyone confirm whether Shell has discontinued offering Helix Ultra 5W40 at it's bunks.

Today I went to Shell bunk at Kharadi, Pune. Team there informed me that Shell has replaced Helix Ultra 5W40 with Shell Helix Fuelsave 5W30 across all of its fuel station.

It is fully synthetic oil with API SN Plus, ACEA A3/B4, A3/B4.

I thinking of using it in my Honda Jazz i-DTEC.All about diesel engine oils-20220119_144543.jpg

Re: All about diesel engine oils

It won't hurt your Jazz. Feel free. Also go to any engine oil shop or amazon and you will find the same thing for far cheaper. Shell bunks will sell at MRP.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Have been using the Amsoil 5W 40 for my XUV for the last 2 years. This time around, the oil isn't available on Amazon and the Mobil Delvac 5W 40 has me all confused.

Has run approx 1.10L kms

Should I wait for the Amsoil to restock or go ahead with an alternative ?

I get my vehicle comprehensively serviced at the start of the year.
Let me know.

This looks like a good fit, recently ordered one for my SCross-1.6, yet to use it.

You can use either Delvac MX or Shell Rimula R4.Both are heavy duty mineral oil and should suit the XUV well. Can be used upto 10K kms drain interval.

Or use the Mahindra OEM oil. That is also pretty good I heard.

Maximile FEO is a very well formulated oil for the price. Far better than some other OEM oils I've tried. Go ahead, use it.

I kept buying Shell, Amsoil and such for my Scorpio till I figured out that for my highway use pattern, Feo was about as good.

What is offending about it? Excellent oil, and has an ACEA A5/B5 rating and 5w30. It will work perfectly well with your MJD.

Are you facing problems with your engine using this oil?

No major issues, apart from the scare it gave me, when I saw it only had ACEA SN Plus. Thus, it was offending for me. The oil is good and car was very peppy after the change. I am approaching 6000 kms on this oil. Usually, I feel hoarseness in engine note post 8000 to 8500 kms on the oil, but not so sure how this oil would feel. If it can carry the current performance levels till 9000 to 9500 kms, then this oil would be a winner. It gives a very large drain interval, if you read the literature on the right side of the can. So, I am hoping, it can last for 10,000 kms without any major issues. I did a cursor check of the oil a few days back, the oil did not feel 'burnt'.

From experience on a Scorpio you can push the Amsoil to well past 10K but I wouldn't advise it. Your filter will give out far faster than the oil gives out, so change on whatever the manufacturer schedule is (which is 10k kilometers).
