re: Review: 2nd-gen Hyundai Verna (2011) 4000 KM ownership review:
When trying to upgrade my car from Swift, I have shortlisted, Altis, Vento, SX4, and Verna since all have diesel variants and I was looking only for a diesel car. Corolla Altis Diesel: Went beyond my budget for the features that I was looking for. The base variants did not have anything appealing except the engine and Corolla branding. So, dropped it from my list since the premium variant is costing a lot. Did not go for TD as well. Vento Diesel: I did TD the car and found the engine response was not too punchy. I am not sure if it is because of the TD vehicle maintenance. The engine noise was very high inside the car. I prefer quite interiors. Of course, the Swift was noisy as well, but when buying a C segment car, I think we have to take this as an important point. SX4: Average interiors and features list. The interiors are very outdated. Again, very under powered engine for a car of that size. However, I really liked the roominess of the vehicle. The driving seat position was high for a comfortable driving. When I spoke to the Maruthi sales guy, to my surprise, his response was very bad. All I asked him was to give a few discounts on the accessories and he did even oblige to that. His statement was “If you are interested with the price I have quoted, buy it and he also stated that he cannot do anything beyond that” I was not too happy with the response though I was a loyal Maruthi customer for 7 years. So, dropped the idea of looking into SX4. ANHV: I have a friend who is very much into cars. He owns a couple of car dealerships in Karnataka. When I spoke to him, he asked me to wait until the ANHV is launched and then take a decision. The first time I got to see it was on 10-May. The dealer received a car for the launch. The sales person called me to have a look at it, but couldn’t go for a TD. He called me again on 13-May that I can go for a TD. The TD vehicle was brand new, so a very apt vehicle for a TD. I did my TD for about 5 KM mostly in the city condition. No looking back, I went and paid the booking amount on 14-May. Got my car mid July. Engine performance: Very smooth and good responsive engine. No turbo lag. Very quite when compared to other cars that I have TD’ed. It’s really fun to drive such a smooth and responsive engine. I am more of a city driver than highways. Generally clocks around 40KM per day within city. The extra power helps in great manoeuvrability within the city. Of course, I hardly used 6th gear due to city driving condition. Interiors: Good fit and finish. Very good quality. I read somewhere about falling parts, which I don’t agree. Too much of beige colour was used inside. I had changed my seat covers to black leatherette, so neutralized it a bit. Please see attached photos. Seating comfort: I am 5ft 11in. The driver seat is comfortable with good support. The height adjustable feature helps a lot. The rear seat is a little low when compared to other cars that I have looked. However, no one in my family complained about it so far. I have asked the car accessories guy to put more cushion for the rear seat covers. I believe the height increased a little bit because of that. Handling: The most discussed topic in this forum. I felt the handling was much better than the previous generation Verna’s. The suspension is still more on the softer side. Within city the softer suspension is a boon, very comfortable. The suspension works great by taking most of the impacts on bad road conditions. However, I did post about the thud noise when going thru unexpected potholes due to softer suspension. I felt that was not good. I am not sure why Hyundai did not look into this specially for Indian road conditions.
On highways, when driving around 110 KMH, its Wallowy as Zappo review states. However, It did not bother me at all when driving at 110 KMH. None of the other passengers in the car complained about any discomfort. I am not a driver who goes beyond 120 KMPH, so I am absolutely okay with the current condition. FE
Manual verification: 14.5 + at least 4 times I checked under city conditions.
MID FE was showing: 16 average all the 4 times. Initially, could not understand why the numbers were different. I have changed the gas station last 2 times and the readings are almost matching now.
Did not go on a long drive to check the highway mileage ICE: Average. Definitely needs an upgrade (amp/speakers/woofer) for the music lovers. I am going to upgrade the speakers soon. Features and their quality: Excellent. Reverse camera, folding mirrors, blue tooth and so on are definitely handy. Bluetooth when synced with my iphone worked seamlessly. Remote boot door open button was one feature that I feel got missed. Ground clearance: So far no issues with the 163 GC. Overall: I am very happy with the buy. Very peppy engine and love the extra power. The engine noise is very low inside the car which makes the interior very comfortable. Definitely a head turner so far where ever I go with its stunning looks. :-) If anyone has any specific questions, I will be happy to provide more information.
