I have shot a video on my phone but have to read up on how to attach it here.
Not sure if you are being sarcastic here, but that's a Jeep Wrangler.

An actual Jeep Wrangler.

No, that's an actual Thar AX.
The soft tops on all three are different.
Thar hard top has a different look, and the convertible soft top is a lot more loose fitting

Doesn't this only reinforce just how much of a rip off they have done with the new Thar?

Don't know if you are being sarcastic here, but that is the original based on what the Thar has 'allegedly' been inspired/copied from. Wrangler.

No way it's a Thar
1. Door handles?
2. Taillights?
3. HMSL above the spare wheel.
To name a few.

This is a jeep wrangler, or a clone.

Had it been a 5 door Thar, it would come with a curved rear wheel arch (as opposed to the angled rear arch of a Wrangler) and that would be the Thar's signature giveaway - angled arch in front and curved at the rear.

Re: Mahindra Thar Review : First Drive

Just test drove Thar Diesel 2020 in both manual and automatic avatar. Drive was done in heavy city traffic.

Critical observations on both:

Manual:
1) Bad brakes.
2) Cramped driver footwell.
3) More spirited and controlled while driving.
4) Fit and finish of gear lever better than in automatic.
5) FE as displayed on MID: 14 kmpl. (TD vehicle)
6) Doesn't require frequent gear shifts in city traffic.

Automatic:
1) Acceptable brakes.
2) Manageable driver footwell. Dead pedal would be sorely missed.
3) Smooth automatic shifts. Triptronic pretty handy in overtaking.
4) The embossed 2H, 4H, N, 4L IMO would fade away with time imo.
5) FE as displayed on MID: 12 kmpl. (TD vehicle)
6) Easier to manoeuver in city than manual.

Re: Mahindra Thar Review : First Drive

Hi All,

Great write up GTO and practical observations and I also think Convertible Top is the best thing offered in new Thar, but wish it was across the trim and slightly cheaper than current price (only 10k difference between this CT and HT is not clear)

Lots of useful information and mixed reactions on this thread. To me, this New Thar (as a product it is intended to be) is a great new piece of engineering over earlier model. We get much more than what was complained or desired in earlier Thar.
Certainly leaps ahead of previous gen.

I dont understand why people here compare it with a car, LWB, MPV or other crossovers. Its better for them to consider Creta, Innova or Seltos etc. which are more suitable as safer, more comfortable and practical family cars. Those can be considered as ONLY vehicle in the family for their versatile nature. With something like Thar, if you dont need offroad capabilities of Thar and want it ONLY for the jeep/ macho looks then you will get disappointed with its lack of practical usage compared to other softroaders in same price band.

There are some points rightly mentioned by others that it should have some more options for storage, as boot is less and useless, then there could have been some alternative given (eg: roof rack mount points on body) or complete metal body (as an option)

Also, we can imagine the risks and annoyance associated with moving bags or things flying behind driver if we keep rear seats completely flat and uses entire rear area as cargo bay. Things must be secured in such situations and I dont know if there are any points /loops given to tie the luggage securely inside.

Also there could have be storage boxes given on either side on top of rear wheel wells from factory that could be used to store tool kits securely along with other stuffs and when closed, could be used as handrest or having cup holders etc. Considering the glove box is only suitable to keep gloves now this will be better alternative for keeping less frequently used stuffs including other recovery gears (like tow rope, some documents, portable air compressor or first aid kit etc.)

Also the brakes could be feeling spongy on some TD vehicles than other TD vehicles, considering they are brand new (May be same feeling we get when we replace the brake pads?)

Anyways, I wanted to also highlight one difference I noticed with the diesel engine noise heard from the Red AX (6 seater ST) compared to LX series. I saw two offroading videos posted few pages ago of AX and guess the engine noise is much louder in AX compared to other offroading videos seen for LX (assuming 4 low gear) . This is strange considering both versions do not have any padding under the boot lid, yet that AX sounded more crude compared to LX.
Does anyone else also thinks same?

Drive safe, Stay safe.

Its RWD. Most ladder on frame vehicles sold are RWD in 2H

Re: Mahindra Thar Review : First Drive

I am stuck in a no man zone. I tested Covid Positive and was hospitalized for a week followed by another 2 weeks of quarantine.

In the meantime, Thar seems to have become a run away success. I desperately want to get the test drive and choose the color. But I have to wait till the 25th at the least. I was hoping to get it in the first lot. But looks like I may have to wait for January based on the booking numbers.

Any idea what is production plan for the Thar. At 3000 units a month, we are looking at close to 4 months booking with limited cities. I see it further raising than slowdown for the foreseeable future.

In between, what colors are available to look t in Hyderabad. I saw Black and Mystic Copper. I was hoping to see other cars and test drive the Automatic Diesel before taking the plunge.

The way the weather has been in Hyderabad over the last couple of days, it would have been perfecting outing for the THAR.

I was wondering how legal is it to get the Winch. Any minor modification seems to trigger the RTO. And winch would be against the pedestrian safety norms. So how feasible is it to get it added.

Hope we can get some of these right out of factory iself.

A Malayalam daily quoted Veejay Nakra that the initial production capacity planned was 2500 units, which they are planning to increase to 3500 units after the announcement of 9000 initial bookings. I haven't been able to find an online or English source for the same.

Also as per my local dealer - their allotment is likely to be 40 units per month. He had 277 bookings as our conversation happened, which means a 6-7 month waiting list in case there are no cancellations, increase of allotments etc.

The winch itself would require a heavy duty front bumper as well. Wonder how does one stay on the right side of the law and install a heavy front bumper and then mount the winch on it.
