Re: 2021 Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT | Ownership Review

After wash and polish. Despite taller, wider, longer, white color is easier to maintain. The Garnet red innova is a pain, especially if you are obsessed with clean car. White car is cooler too. Innova and Fortuner were sun bathing for 2-3 hours, while I could rest my hands on Fortuner bonnet, Innova was boiling.

Re: 2021 Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT | Ownership Review

Did some offroading today. The road is close to my home and is not in use anymore. Come monsoon this is strict 4x4 territory. In summer, my Endeavour 4x2 can do the descent but not the ascent. Thar does this with ease but need 4Low during monsoon. Got to try 4Lo, DAC in Fortuner, did perform well. No hits to underbelly, front/rear bumper. The Thar expectedly performs better, one need not worry about repair costs is anything unforseen happens. Dueler H/T are decent, doesnot offer you grip like a good AT tire but with strong off-road kit, performs well. Off road grip levels are on par with Endeavours MRF Wanderer but slightly lower than Geolanders.

Congratulations PrideRed on your new possession!
The Fortuner is quite a menacing beast inside out. What really appeals to me is the fact that the people move out of your way the moment they see this mighty SUV!

Do you have any future mods planned for the beast?

Here's wishing you tons of miles

Thank you. None planned immediately, have a list but that may be a year or two down the lane when COVID subsides.

Yes the pre-facelift had a button to switch off the electric boot (PBD Power Back Door in Toyota terms). But for the facelift it has been incorporated into the MID in vehicle settings.

Thank you, yes the option is present in MID. The Legender though gets a button to deactivate kick sensor.

Re: 2021 Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT | Ownership Review

With lockdown, ODO is stuck at 5500KM, 3 months since the Fortuner came home. Take it for a spin inside home once in a while and gets a good wash along with other cars in garage. Due to Lockdown I could not get planned PPF or a polish done after delivery. Luckily was able to get Turtle ceramic polish and have applied two coats. I am impressed with the polish, body panel feels smooth, has water bead effect and looks shiny. Got same applied on Endeavour too and results look great on an older car. Also applied water repellent to windscreen(waxpol), a VFM product.

Meanwhile 7 year old Thar came back after a full makeover. With Fortuner coming in, the garage now has a 4x2 AT, 4x2 MT, 4x4MT and 4x4 AT, all Body on frame.

Re: 2021 Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT | Ownership Review

Hoping COVID to end or atleast subside soon, so that Fortuner and me get some road time. Accumulated vacations and SUV calls for a long road trip, unfortunate that all those 200+ horses will remain confined.

Few shots clicked after weekend routine.

Re: 2021 Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT | Ownership Review

Since I got the car, I was contemplating on swapping tires with Endeavour, which has 4-5K run Geolander AT. My tire guy advised against it, primarily because Dueler HT is far more comfortable on highway and can perform decently off road too(which I witnessed during some of my off road too). Add to that Duelers cost 18-19K while the the Geolanders Cost only about 13K.
I was comparing Tread pattern of Geolander and Dueler, the AT actually did not look that different. Unless I get BF Goodrich or Bighorn(may be few others), there is no point in swapping to cheaper ATs atleast for my usage. Also since my Endeavour is 4x2, AT is a necessity.
Second thing I observed is Fortuner's 3rd row. Toyota somehow seem to have ignored 3rd row. For one it doesnot get perforated leather and secondly roof top lights are not LEDs.
I don't know if I am getting used too or if the suspension has settled down, I don't feel the stiffness I felt day one. Its more supple now and quite comfortable. After a full underbody wash, Fortuner feels even more comfortable, don't know if there is any contributor. While Endeavour still has the better suspension, I find the difference much lesser compared to day 1. I maintain 28-29 PSI on all tires.
Leather used on Endeavour's steering is much more softer. I prefer this over leather/wooden steering of Fortuner.
For my height(5'11), second row of Fortuner is much more comfortable. I get more under thigh support, and seats of Fortuner recline lot more too. Endeavour's seats are still set bit low, and is narrower too. I now understand why my family find Fortuner's second and even third row more comfortable. Front seats are equally good in both, I am unable to select a winner. Endeavour's are more like sofa and Fortuner is more sporty.

In Fortuner I drive faster. Not that I am pushing, but powerful engine, taut suspension and way the car masks speed, I am unknowingly doing faster speeds. Travel times are lesser compared to my other cars. Despite higher speeds on all situations Fortuner gives atleast 1 KMPL more than 2.2 Endeavour and around 2 KMPL less than my manual Innova.

Fortuner got to flex its muscle a bit during ongoing lockdown. Secluded, off road and some fresh air. Some good music from those 11 speakers made for an enjoyable drive!

Though I am not very sure, I believe there might be a reason why those lights are not LEDs. It could be to have lesser glare/sharpness in the rear view mirror as those lights can be directly visible from the rear view mirror. Also, probably to avoid the sharp LED light in the RVM (which can cause momentary blinding of the drivers eyes) if the auto-dimming is OFF for some reason. Similarly, the vanity mirror lights are not LEDs as well probably to avoid harsh light on to the eyes. Knowing Toyota, I don't think they will have these trivial inconsistencies without a reason.

Possible, however 2nd row gets LED. I have no issue and is a easy fix if one wants to change. Non perforated leather is a miss though. That said 2nd row and 3rd row is better place to be, given the flexibility it offers.

I had a good go in the Fortuner 4X4 yesterday. Got a closed road too.

In layman terms, I can bet, that the compound used in the 18 inch Dueler HT’s are *WAY* better than 17 inch Dueler HT’s in 235 section. And, there simply is no comparison with the Wanderers used in 18 inch.

I am just talking about feel, in terms of NVH etc. Outright grip in no road zone, the AT’s would fare better, but I love the way the Duelers scream and howl on good tarmac with corners . And they are sticky, hence they keep on protesting and do not give up easily.

If getting an AT, either a Goodrich or some really good tire with good dual compound is the only option.

And thanks for your review and updates .

Agree, there is no point in swapping to cheaper rubber just for the sake of AT. Just to add, Duelers cost 18-19K a piece, 13K for Wanderer and I paid 14K a piece for Geolanders.

Except Thar, rest 3 cars have audio systems from Harman. Crysta has JBL+Infinity , JBL in Fortuner and I believe the one in Endeavour is co developed with Harman(I might be wrong). Between Endeavour and Fortuners audio setup , even after 4 months I am unable to conclude which one is better. The endeavour has an edge in 2nd row and speakers are louder but the Fortuner one seems more clearer/richer.

Re: 2021 Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT | Ownership Review

Warming up for the weekend. Short trail, with monsoon kicking off, surface has become slippery. Used 4H in some places and was breeze. Same section in Thar breaks my bone where as Fortuner was lot more comfortable in comparison. Width can bother especially when roads get narrow.
