Re: Civved : Wayanad

Day 03
24th February 2013
Wayanad -Kabini - Bangalore

We started our drive back to Bangalore by 13:30 hours.

We drove back via the same unimpressive route
which we took to reach Wayanad in Trip 1

We have come a long way

Civved : Wayanad-dsc_4666.jpg

High impact zone
Civved : Wayanad-dsc_4673.jpg

The road ahead is closed, and that belongs to Nagarahole national park
Civved : Wayanad-dsc_4677.jpg

The diversion takes us through some very treacherous route

Also a checkpost

Road or no road, these guys are happy

The lone tree which symbolizes the end of the treacherous section.

We were done with the bad stretch by 15:00 hours and we drove non stop via Mysore road to reach our home by 18:00 hours.

The End

Re: Civved : Wayanad

Nice photos Lalu.
Lucky to have a hotel without any crowd.
Arecanut plantation photos were really nice.
Those Kabini photos are also good. Very calm.
BTW, that Sign board differentiates between a "Camera" & an "Outdoor Camera". What is the difference?

Out door camera - I have no clue. Probably the wedding photographers go there with all gears, and may be that qualifies as outdoor photo shoot and outdoor camera costs apply ?

How on earth did you manage to take your Civic on this road? This road has been wreaked from god knows when. This is the stretch where the other end leads you to a place called HD Kota.

In spite of falling in to this road once in 2011, that too in the middle of the night, I ended up at this stretch once again back in May 2012 when returning from Wayanad. I was in my Linea and my colleague in a SX4. Even the SX4 took a hit in some places. At some stretches, there is no road, just lumps of mud.

The two times I landed up here was due to lack of awareness. The first time was in October 2011. 3 days after my son was born, my grand father passed away so I had to drive my folks to Calicut. We could leave only by 4pm. We lost a lot of time getting out of Bangalore and ended up reaching the forest gates in Bandipur 15 minutes late (915pm). My father explained the situation to the forest officials but there was no way they were letting us in. We turned back to Gundlepet town where we were guided to this wreaked road via Mysore. We did not know it was wreaked nor were we told. Also; I can't say if we followed the directions we were told well enough. I do not think we did as we were advised to a road that stays open all night unlike the roads through the jungle. Did not have a smart phone back then. We drove back to Mysore and then landed in this no road area. It was 12am. We got lost after a point and reached the gates of Kabini Jungle Resorts. They were full for the night so we slept in the car. We were really lucky as the guard of the jungle resorts property allowed to use the restrooms. He served us Tea in the morning too. It was very stressful for my folks, especially my father. We left as soon as the sun came up. It was a nightmare dealing with this road even in broad daylight. I had a Ikon back then so managed to get it out of this crazy stretch without hitting anything.

The next time around was in May 2012 when I was returning from a long weekend with a close friend and colleague from Wayanad. My friend decided to follow me as he is not good with directions. My over confidence and poor memory landed us back on this same wreaked stretch but from the Wayanad end. Oh man. I was just cursing myself. It was too much to drive back to Bathery and take the normal road back to Gundelpet nor did I know of an alternate road to drive back.

The sad thing is all the premium holiday properties are in this wreaked hole. Water Woods, Jungle Resorts to name a couple are all in here. I don't see the point paying a ridiculous amount to stay at these properties and then have to deal with absolutely no roads to get there. Even a Innova had to take it easy inside this stretch. It is a miracle your Civic make it out of here.

Sandeep, the first trip could have been real tough for you. Indeed the watchman who offered you guys tea shows humanity still exists in this world.

Regarding Civic, considering the fact that I had to drive through Kutta, Tholpetty, Gonikoppal route in the midnight when there existed no roads, this was nothing. Civvy manages it all for me, since I take civvy where ever I go

Re: Civved : Wayanad

Dear Laluks!

You have an impeccable talent of photography and an eye for details. In fact, your detailed description of places along with eye catching photographs, give us an impression as though we had traveled to these places (virtual journey?). Though I had visited Wayanad some time ago during monsoon, I had actually cut my trip short as I was not greatly impressed with the place. In fact, after going through your posts, I am really ashamed of my decision and am itching to make a trip again some time soon. Armed with your detailed travelogue and with the inputs from other seasoned Team-BHPians, I hope this trip will be a memorable one.

Lalu,

Do you have the same in GPX/GDB ? GPX is much easier to open on Garmin S/W. Hence asked.
(Though KML gets opened easily with Google Earth)
