What about two wheelers like scooters & bikes? Are they targeted too?

In the meanwhile, I collected some information and found that the Govt. has the right to requisition private vehicles; however, first the Govt. & commercial vehicles are requisitioned. An interesting conversation cum article is here: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/h...ow/7938613.cms

In the badlands of UP & Bihar, anything is possible - including bicycles

Is this some british raj diktat? How can they just take your vehicle. Sounds against the fundamental principal of democracy.

In the 'goodlands' of Calcutta also anythig is possible. Including flouting High Court orders regarding vehicle requisition.

During the last assembly elections, mobikes were requisitioned. IIRC, ADC's too.

I read somewhere that someone's Tata Safari was requisitioned forcefully. The owner had got fitted TV, sun shades and all those luxuries for his wife, since she was allergic to sunlight and moreover she needed the vehicle frequently to see the doctor. The owner then filed a suit against the officer who confiscated his vehicle. The court ruled in his favor and said that Govt. cannot 'forcefully' take away ones vehicle. Even after the ruling, his Safari was not returned. Due to this adamant behaviour of the officer, he was jailed! Justice finally served!
Though, we are going severely OT in this thread.

IIRC the 'jailing' was notional. The official was 'confined' on the court premises for a day while the court was in session.

Your version is absolutely correct Sutripta da, but for the respected, the term 'jailed' itself is worse than actually suffering the jail

Hi SS-Traveller

This classic thread is great piece of information for Delhi- Kolkata Travelers and I made full use of it when i traveled in Nov-13 even though it was 4th time since 2006.
Thanks for keeping this thread alive & updated.

My Observation after 4 trips.

1. Well great roads are being made but nos of vehicles outplay the infrastructure growth. As a result the 4 laned GQ will soon get chooked & you cannot expect same average speed. This happened to NH-8 and no wonder Kanpur-Etawa is being 6 laned

2. In U.P & Bihar, you make bypass for example- Etawa bypass and soon the whole village/Kasba develop on both side of the bypass road. Roads are means of earning for many people. Soon it may happen to Allahabad bypass.

3. Other than Yamuna Expressway & Allahabad bypass, best average speed is obtained from Sasaram to Govindpur and from Burdwan/Palsit to Dankuni

4. Its high time they make 4 lane Pannagarh bypass. (surprisingly the only 2 laned portion on NH-2 or for that matter it may be on entire GQ) In fact NHAI should bypass entire Durgapur-Asansol as in this stretch, the NH-2 has been taken over as the City Main Road.

In the political / business environment it is unlikely that a brave step such as Durgapur to Asansol bypass project will ever be seen with favour. Precisely because of the State's unenviable land acquisition record. Future govt. will be very cautious in doing so.

For the Panagarh stretch, much of the surrounding land is owned by Defense. And that negotiation between NHAI, MoD, and the state has languished for long.

However what might work is for the agencies to construct flyovers in congested areas and major intetsections so that thru traffic is less impacted. Doing so would likely not require acquisition of extra land, only the eviction of squatters and encroachers.

Did Kolkata-Delhi-Rotang la-Kolkata on 24-03-14 and back on 03-04-014, this time with my new Thar. Found cops with election people just before Sasaram and Varanasi. Entry of all passenger cars were video recorded and luggage checked though just a general scan. Did not see any cops to get hold of cars for election duty.
The road on approach to Varanasi from kolkata side is still broken. Rest of the roads are good. The road between Kanpur to Agra has a lot of diversions, due to the construction of flyovers. May be one year down the line, kanpur to agra should be a cake walk.

Absolutely! Or maybe, make that Kanpur to Delhi! With all this road widening work, I wish they also upgrade the Toll plazas on this stretch.

Agra-Delhi via the Yamuna Expressway is now the road to use. The NH2 from Agra to Delhi will continue to degenerate, with growth of population along its length making sure that average speeds on this stretch reduce further over the coming years.

Exactly what I meant. Kanpur - Agra on the 'widened' NH2, and Agra onward on the Yamuna Expressway.
