The Food

We've always looked forward to good food at all places we've visited, and Goa was no different. The gastronomic experience at Goa was good to start with, and vindaloos and xacutis (of the prawn and chicken varieties) ruled the table.

Then there was the Goan chilli chicken, distinctly different from the Indo-Chinese standard fare we get all over the country.

There was batter-fried squid at Dona Paula...

...and a whopping selection of seafood at this little restaurant unusually named Electric Cats, at Calangute.

They even had the raw seafood on display in a glass case out front!

Highly recommended by some locals was the Souza Lobo and Lobo's Palm restaurants, again at Calangute, where one sits out on the beach and enjoys the food along with the breeze. However, their approach to service put us off completely, where choosing not to participate in alcoholic products is considered a sin by the waiter. And yes, they didn't have roti and I didn't want rice.

We found this Punjabi Dhaba at Calangute too, and although the service is lightning fast and the food tastes great (the usual north Indian fare with a hint of grated coconut to go - and yes, they had rotis!), the cleanliness leaves some doubt - though our stomachs collectively reported no issues at all here.

SS, was the pictures of welcoming rain in Goa was compressed quite a bit - looked grainy compared to others shots.

Great snaps. Liked the beach view from that fisherman's village.

Nice pics there SS. Didn't you go to baga beach?? We spent most of our time there and the waiter there had no issues with us in terms of fast delivery of our order and some nice Karaoke stuff.

I gave a skip to calangute bech per say considering N number of visits to Goa and that beach. Have also planned not to visit Goa for at least next 3 years

Yes, a couple of pics appear a little blurred - happened due to condensation on the lens.

Thanks, Harish. No, we didn't make it to Baga beach because of a traffic jam on the road.

More food in Goa

This garishly coloured rest(aurant!) at Vagator beach had served up some great prawn dishes when we were there some 15 years ago, but we didn't try out the fare only because we just had lunch before arriving there.

Cashew is supposed to be abundant in Goa, and one expects the stuff to be cheaper than at other places. To our surprise, we found the prices at multiple shops to be about at par with what we would pay in Delhi, and more expensive than the prices in Manipal and Coorg later.

Our favourite - green coconut - always costs more in the coastal areas of South India where it grows in abundance. In the eastern parts of India (OR & WB), green coconuts can be had for as low as Rs.5, but here they were Rs.20 each. Good stuff, however.

Tomorrow morning, we drive to Manipal.

Goa to Manipal

The Goa-to-Manipal drive was uneventfully and leisurely done in 8 hours, in constant rain. A short stopover happened at Kundapura to locate Shetty's Lunch Home as per advice from friends on this forum, to pick up the supposedly famous Chicken Ghee Roast. This, however, proved to be elusive, because the wait period between placing your order and getting it, we were told at the counter, was one hour. One full hour!!! I guess that'd be how long it takes to milk a cow and freshly prepare the ghee.

Anyway, here are the visuals from the drive.

Fishing nets spread out to dry for miles on end.

Driving alongside the sea - a visual treat, and probably the best part of our journey.

Manipal & Samurai

All along the drive to Manipal, we were greeted with incessant rain and dark grey skies, something we are not used to in North India, although I must say we enjoyed the cool weather.
Hawk-on-fours on a pan-India tour: Delhi-Mumbai-Goa-Manipal-Coorg-Kolkata-Delhi-manipal.jpg

The first agenda at Manipal was to meet up with Samurai, since he would be leaving town the next morning. Soon after we arrived at my B-I-L's place here,
Hawk-on-fours on a pan-India tour: Delhi-Mumbai-Goa-Manipal-Coorg-Kolkata-Delhi-manipal-6.jpg

off I went to meet up with him here.
Hawk-on-fours on a pan-India tour: Delhi-Mumbai-Goa-Manipal-Coorg-Kolkata-Delhi-manipal-1.jpg

What ensued was a spot of off-roading in Samurai's front yard, and here are a few pictures and a video of the same.

It continued to rain, and the spots on the pictures are raindrops on the lens.

A last picture after dinner!

Amazing snaps and travelogue.

Log every thing fast, before enormity of mundane work takes over, and before all the delicacies etched in your memory gets re-written by paraphernalia of daily work.

Samurai's front/backyard has been on this forum many a times in the 4x4 section. Why do you want to know my lucky number?!
