I think the integrity of the tyre is at question once the sidewall is cut, since it flexes quite a lot. I had a cut on my tyre which wwas 2.5k kms old. Its a sad state to be in, but better to replace the tyre.

Yep, it has become a glorified brand new Michelin that will adorn the court of King Stepney I.

Re: Sidewall cut in tubeless tyre - repair possible?

There would be some 'puncture' repairers who would offer to 'repair' the sidewall cut. Don't believe them. You don't want a tyre blowout at high speed.

So replace rather than repair.

Tyre Guru Nikhil - Saw this rupture in the front right tyre sidewall. How big can it get or how dangerous can it get ? Advise please !!

Also the tread left in the tyre seems less. I havent measured the depth though. Its Apollo Accelere stock tyre with 26.5k on the ODO. Please advise here too.

Re: Wheel Alignment/Balancing : Madhus Enterprises (Langford rd, Bangalore)

Soumyajit, I'm no expert, but IMO the only way to tell for sure would be to remove the tyre from the wheel and inspect the inside of the sidewall where the damage has occurred. Photos don't tell the whole story. At least for now, swap it with the spare, and go to Madhu's as soon as you can.

Re: Sidewall cut in tubeless tyre - repair possible?

Looks like a surface scuff, you probably hit a kerb / road divider. The tyre should last it's lifetime, as it would've bulged if there was major internal injury to the carcass.

Re: Sidewall cut in tubeless tyre - repair possible?

Bumping up this thread. My santro driven for hardly 18k has got a small cut on one tyre sidewall. It is tubeless. The cut is small but looks to be 5mm deep. The piece of rubber is not sliced off. I drove the car in this way for say 5k but once realized kept the tyre as stepny. My question is whether I should keep the tyre as stepny or replace it. Checked at few places for possible repair but only answer got is to keep as stepny. It is a tyre with hardly 10k on it with nice condition otherwise. It is bit painful to throw away a kinda brand new tyre but nothing beyond safety. Please suggest. It is goodyear 155/70 R13 tyre.

You can use it as a stepney by putting a tube inside.

Re: Sidewall cut in tubeless tyre - repair possible?

Hello guys,

Yesterday while filling air, I noticed a 2 inches long crack on the rear tyre side wall. There wasnt a drastic change in the air level inside.
Can this be repaired or is it best to get a new one.

All my 4 tyres are 41k kms old and i'm expecting they will run up to 50k kms based on the tread depth. In this case, is it okay to run with 1 new tyre and 3 old ones.

This crack will propogate as the tyre rotates under the load during the use. This looks to be dangerous even if you put a tube inside. Better to change this.

Replace this tyre with a spare tyre. Buy a new tyre and keep it in the boot as spare. Start using the new tyre when you replace the other tyres.

Thanks Rahul, swapped this with the spare tire.
Looking at changing the other 4 tyres in a month or two. And then I'll send this back to the boot as the spare tyre.

@tud are your tyres older than 4 years ? They seem to be 'drying' up.

The damage is in the sidewall. Also I see a crack starting from this damaged area. So, as explained in this thread, do not use the tyre.

If the treads are good, you can put a tube and use as a spare tyre.

There is a treadwear indicator mark inside the tread grooves. This mark is there at 5-6 places in the groove. It is something like a bridge at the bottom of the groove, connecting the two inner sides of the same groove.

In the new tyre, this indicator is seen deep inside the groove. As the tyre starts wearing out, the indicator is seen as a lesser depth.

When the outer rolling surface of the tyre is flush with the treadwear indicator, we shall replace the tyre though there is some tread depth left.
