The autoindia must be of 1997 if I am not mistaken. In 2003 I had called Mr.Bedi on the phone number in this advt to find out the whereabouts of this car and he had told me it was purchased by Taj group for 1.5 lakhs

Early registration numbers in India-calcutta-policeman-1935.jpg

Calcutta, ca 1935.

The car looks like a 1926-ish Erskine. May be the experts can identify.

Almost certainly a 27/28 Chevy - though I haven't seen that style of bumper often. Lovely picture!

Don't miss the hood ornament - a similar one is fitted to the LaSalle in Hyderabad.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Attached are images of a 1948 registration book - I noticed a stamp "South Deccan Region, Poona" and the abbreviation S.D.R., Poona. The car was originally registered in Satara district with a BYF series. I assume at the time BM- series was Bombay city, and BY- series for the rest of the Bombay State.

Also found petrol rationing slips - or rather Motor Spirit Rationing Order as it was then called. Does anyone remember when the rationing stopped?

Very nice! Owned by the Reform Taxi Cab Co., Canal Street, Entally. It seems they also owned more similar Fiats, registered T 546, T 556, T 557, T 574, T 578, T 602, T 604, T 613, T 623 and probably many more!

Re: Early registration numbers in India

I was lucky to read a very interesting account of the earliest days of the automobile in Bombay. It mentions the first car registered in Bombay was simply No 1 - a 12hp Orleans car, of Sir Richard Lamb. No. 2 was owned by Mr. J Sladen, and No. 3 was a De Dion of Mr. Rustomjee Byramjee Jeejeebhoy. By 1905, 355 cars were registered in Bombay!

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Caught this screen grab from an old film shot in Darjeeling and Kalimpong if I remember right. Unfortunately forgot to save the link.

Early registration numbers in India-img_7071.png

It shows what is almost certainly a 1938 Dodge product, bearing registration what seems to read BCX 310? Could that be right? Note the white plate, implying it is possibly a taxi/commercial vehicle.

Karl,
Very interesting. I think this is a 1939 series number from Bengal state and would be BGX. I do not have a code letter for Darjeeling (which I feel should have had one) and I do not have the code letter X listed either although most letters are accounted for.
So, 2+2=4.5 means the BGX could well be Darjeeling.......(probably)

Keep watching those old films please!
Cheers
Cedric

That is so amazing that you found this photo or perhaps advert would be a better name.

Now that I see the advert and whole picture, I believe that this is a very early dealer plate from somewhere. I would expect Bombay to have been B or a number alone maybe so I just wonder if DD was Delhi???? The flyer seems to read (if my old eyes don't deceive me) that Standard supplied cars (plural) for the royal guests in Delhi so I think DD is indeed Delhi Dealer. 120 would be the Standard Motor Co. and 5 would be the 5th plate for that dealer.
Cheers
Cedric

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Hello all.
Here is an interesting plate for sale on Ebay just now. The owner claims it is a 1939 Delhi registration plate but I am not so sure. The 2 big holes and the plate in general look unused and there is bits of a Delhi sticker on the back. Why the third home made hole? The plate is enamelled so it is early for sure and red on white makes no sense to me as it does not fit regular, dealer or temporary styles of any period.
All thoughts, comments and suggestions welcomed.
Cheers
Cedric

Re: Early registration numbers in India

A lovely photo of a 1946 Chevy Fleetmaster taken in Rajkot around 1949.

Early registration numbers in India-reg.jpg

The plate probably reads RAJ - D - 121 in Gujarati? Never seen one like this before.
