Found this picture of Sh. Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati on wikipedia.

According to details on wikipedia, "its described as Sh. Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati riding in car to Naimisaranyaon, the picture is supposed to be from Circa 1930."

Just bought (rather- lent!) the Marathi book- Merchants of Poona.

The book itself is excellent- Providing many views of Poona, in the older days. Plenty of Delights about, MTJ registered, in all probability.

There was an article about the Sable's- Reading it, I stumbled upon BYL 6932. Typical Puneri decorated truck.

I used to see a BYL registered Parrot-Beak Dodge parked near my house for nearly 6 years. The truck itself was abandoned, but I've spent many an idle afternoon, climbing onto her, looking at the (broken and cloudy!) gauges, and trying to turn the steering. Strangely enough, I never managed to turn it. She was a darkish metallic green in colour. Scrapped- I guess, in 2008. I never saw her saw her after 2008, maybe she is still around, who knows?

I still recall, how I had heard her start in 2008 (the last time), and the moment she started, the typical old diesel note- So very characteristic of the old Perkins Diesels! Ah- A Tata Mercedes Benz L-312 I know can come close to the racket she made, though.

'Neways, ladies and gentlemen, BYL 6932. IIRC- this style of wooden body on a rolling truck chassis- is known as 'Satara Body'. So many trucks used to- and still feature this distinctive style of truck bodybuilding, so very unique to the Poona-Satara region.

Dear Fintail - taking a cue from BYL6932, a scrapped chassis with a completely dilapidated body of a similar truck is lying in a compound bang opposite Silver Jubilee Motors showroom at Moledina Road in the Camp area.

Let's go and see it! Strangely enough, Silver Jubilee was instrumental in the founding of PMT- circa 1940.

'Neways- Another nostalgic Pune () pic. Keen observers of the Times of India, Pune will remember encountering this pic, sometime in 2013. A BYL registered Mercedes Benz is observed here.

The pic was taken in the Swargate STC depot, in Poona- Circa 1957. Today- The same depot is known to be an MSRTC (MH State Road Transport Corp.) hub- from where buses regularly head towards Bombay- and primarily towards South MH.

Swargate in '57 seems to have been a much simpler place. There is, strangely, an USHA Sewing machines board in the background- perhaps an advertisement. The buses have been parked in a leisurely manner. Today- This is not possible. Lest we forget, a bus was hijacked from the very same depot in Poona, a couple of years ago. There is a rigid security system in place now. The laid-back pace of life back in the 'Fifties, the electric power cables hanging low from the top...Lest we forget, power was still a luxury in the Socialist 'Fifties. The Mercedes, in all probability was headed in it's next trip, to somewhere in South MH. Baramati...Bhigwan....Satara- Who knows.

The Bombay Presidency Road Transport Corporation would've operated these buses- I guess.

Dear Fintail - we can go and see the truck opposite Silver Jubilee Motors but you'll be disappointed because it's just a skeleton, there's almost nothing left. That's a nice photograph of Swar Gate, thank you. Today, it's completely crowded all the time. By the way, if I am correct, the name of the second bus from the left hand side was "GUY"! I vaguely remember my grandfather mentioning this name to me and I also remember travelling in it.

Some more pics. from my friend Samanyu (who'd earlier shared some pics. of cars that were in his family) shared with me today on whatsapp, of cars that were in his family- a 1936 Desoto that was his great grandfather's, purchased in the 1940s at Madras (though the regn. is of a 'Madras District' though not sure which) a Wolseley that was again in his family and a 'lowlight' Morris Minor that was his grandfather's friend's!

As this one is a Dodge Kingsway Convertible- This one is a Made-In-Detroit (aka USA!) one. The regular sedan's were, of course, assembled by Premier Automobiles Limited (aka PAL! ) in Bombay- by using CKD (Completely-Knocked-Down) kits of the sedan, which came in wooden crates from Detroit.

In her 2010 avatar, she is still wearing the plates, thus depicted in your pic:

She still survives today. In the very same colour that she used to be in- all those years ago.

Knowing how big an auto-nut I am, my sister had brought me these postcards when she visited the Manjusha Car Museum as part of her college trip back in the late 90s.

Nice to know about such scooter. By the way what are 3 brake like paddles on the floor board? 2 in front and 1 at back where bajaj scooters used to have foot rest.
