Bentley sales went down due to 'emotional sensitivity', says CEO

The company reportedly sold 13,560 cars in 2023 - an 11% decline from 2022.

According to reports, Bentley sales witnessed a decline in 2023 compared to the previous year. Adrian Hallmark, CEO of Bentley, stated that there were three main reasons for this; first being the weak economy and second, the high interest rates.

The third reason for the decline was the interesting bit. Hallmark acknowledged "emotional sensitivity" as a cause for lower Bentley sales. He stated, "We had an uneven performance for the first time in about four years. Even though our customers can still afford our cars... there was a level of emotional sensitivity that slowed down demand."

The company reportedly sold 13,560 cars in 2023 - an 11% decline from 2022. This dip translates to a 13% loss in year-on-year revenue and a 17% loss in operating profits.

Coming back to emotional sensitivity, a spokesperson from the company clarified, "It’s caution showing displays of wealth in some markets, China, U.K., that are experiencing continued economic and political difficulty." This means that while the rich can financially 100% buy a Bentley, they are cautious to be socially seen in one.

Having said that, reports also showed that while the brand faced a decline in sales, its higher specification derivatives like the Azure S and Speed models accounted for 70% of all sales last year, compared to 30% in 2022.

Bentley's EV to pack 1,400 BHP; 0 - 97 km/h in 1.5 seconds

This performance figure will not be the main selling point of the EV.

Bentley's first all-electric car is scheduled to arrive in international markets in 2025. The company's CEO, Adrian Hallmark, has indicated that the EV will pack around 1,400 BHP and will be capable of accelerating from 0 - 97 km/h (0 - 60 mph) in just 1.5 seconds.

According to reports, Hallmark mentioned that the Bentley EV will come with an option of accelerating slower, where it sprints from 0 - 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. This is because the quicker 1.5-second acceleration can become uncomfortable and nauseous for some occupants. Although, Hallmark did clarify that this performance figure will not be the main selling point of the EV. Instead, the Bentley EV will shine between 30 - 70 mph (48 - 113 km/h) acceleration or 30 - 150 mph (48 - 241 km/h) if in Germany.

The Bentley EV will use the PPE platform, which also underpins the Porsche Macan EV and the Audi Q6 e-tron. However, there is no information on the body style or design the company will adopt for it. In terms of pricing though, the CEO did mention that one variant of the EV will cost above 250,000 euros.

Bentley cars getting too heavy for EU driver's license

Bentley is Volkswagen Group's heaviest automotive brand, averaging 2,308 kg from its four-model range.

Bentley recently unveiled the Extended Wheelbase version of its Bentayga luxury SUV. With all the added features, the larger dimensions and the powertrain on offer, it is quite obvious that the Extended Wheelbase version weighs more than the standard model. However, with a gross vehicle mass of 3,250 kg, the luxury SUV is getting dangerously close to the weight limit for a European driver's license, which stands at 3,500 kg.

Not wanting customers to get a truck license to drive their cars, Bentley is now lobbying with the European Commission to increase the weight limits on the driver's licence across the continent. Reports suggest that Bentley is Volkswagen Group's heaviest automotive brand, averaging 2,308 kg from its four-model range.

Chris Cole, Bentayga's product line director, stated that with the current technology, cars will hit the weight limit across all of Europe. He further adds that going forward, the weight is only going to increase as the electrification of vehicles expands.

Bentley seems to be the only company lobbying for an increased weight limit. Brands like BMW & Mercedes-Benz are satisfied with the European Union's weight limit. Both companies stated that while today's electric cars are heavier than their IC-engine counterparts, improvements in technology will bring down the weight of EVs in the near future.

Bentley unveils the world's largest carbon-fibre wheels

The pricing for the carbon wheels will be announced later.

Bentley has unveiled what it claims to be the world's largest carbon-fibre wheels to go into production. The wheels measure 22-inches in diameter and will debut on the Bentayga SUV later this year.

The luxury car brand claims that the wheels comply with Technical Inspection Association (TUV) standards. These are also the first carbon wheels ever produced to pass biaxial stress testing, radial & lateral impact testing, tyre over-pressure and other excessive torque tests.

The carbon wheels have also gone through a range of impact and performance tests, including testing on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, before its final sign off.

Bentley claims that apart from weight savings, the new carbon fibre wheels offer a number of advantages over aluminium rims. These include increased safety, better steering control, improved braking performance due to the reduced unsprung mass and reduced tyre wear.

The pricing for the carbon wheels will be announced later.

Bentley's Adaptive Music plays music based on driving style

The technology can compose up to 100 billion unique soundtracks on a single 60-minute drive

Bentley cars now come with the ability to compose an instrumental soundtrack in real-time, based on the driver's inputs and driving style.

The luxury carmaker has partnered with LifeScore - a company that has expertise in 'Adaptive Music', to create a unique soundtrack for every occasion, be it relaxed grand touring or spirited driving on the open road.

This industry-first driver-vehicle-music synchronisation is said to use algorithms created from vehicle inputs, such as engine rpms and acceleration to compose a soundtrack in real-time. The algorithms also help the technology adapt to the changing inputs and driving conditions.

While the music itself has been recorded by real artists using classical and modern instruments, the sounds are broken up into files, which the technology later selects, combines and plays in real-time. Bentley claims that with the amount of audio data available, the technology can compose up to 100 billion unique soundtracks on a single 60-minute drive.

The technology, however, is still in its early stages. It will debut on the brand's first fully electric vehicle, which is expected to arrive sometime in 2025.
