Mahindra has been testing the new Bolero (codename U301) for a while now. Test mules of the car have been spotted on the roads on numerous occasions. This time an image of its interiors has been put up by Motor Vikatan.
While the dashboard is heavily clad, the image does reveal that the new Bolero's interiors will have a rather more upmarket look than the current-generation car. There is a 3-spoke steering wheel, rectangular air conditioner vents and a modern centre console with an infotainment system.
The new Bolero has a straightforward, boxy design with no curves or frills, five doors and carries its spare wheel on the tail gate. Reports say that it has a new ladder-frame chassis and will be available in various body lengths. The car is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. A petrol unit is also likely to be offered. The vehicle is also expected to be equipped with off-roading features. It is rumoured that the current generation Bolero and the new one could co-exist.
Last month Mahindra announced that is planning to introduce three compact SUVs over the next 24 months. With these vehicles, the company intends to offer an alternative at every Rs. 50,000-75,000 price points over the entry-level vehicle.

Mahindra recently announced that it plans to introduce three new compact SUVs over the next 24 months. One of the three will be the next-generation Bolero, codenamed U301. Mahindra has been testing the SUV on Indian roads for a while now. However, the latest set of pictures of the vehicle comes in from as far away as Germany. This does not mean that the Bolero is going to be launched in Germany.
The images show the compact dimensions of the U301. It has straightforward, boxy design with no curves or frills, five doors and carries its spare wheel on its tail gate. Reports say that it has a new ladder frame chassis and will be available in various body lengths. The U301 is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. A petrol unit is also likely to be offered. The vehicle is also expected to be equipped with off-roading features.
It is rumoured that the current generation Bolero and the new one could co-exist.

Mahindra & Mahindra is planning to introduce three vehicles in the lucrative compact SUV segment over the next 24 months. These will include SUVs codenamed S101, U215 and U301. With these vehicles, the company intends to offer an alternative at every Rs. 50,000-75,000 price points over the entry-level vehicle.
The S101 is expected create a new price-point for Mahindra. It is likely to have a compact, car-like appearance and will be pitted as an alternative to premium hatchbacks.
The U215 will be the Quanto facelift. The current Quanto has not had much success and one of the reasons for that is the vehicle's unappealing look. Mahindra plans to give it a more rugged appearance compared to the boxy design with which it was launched. The vehicle may get better interiors as well.
The third SUV will be the U301, which is likely to be equipped with off-roading features. While it is rumoured to be the replacement for the Bolero, there are reports that both vehicles could co-exist.
While Mahindra leads in the utility segment, its market share stood at 42% for the fiscal ended March 2014 - a considerable drop from the 55% that it commanded two years earlier. One of the reasons for his drop is the emergence of the compact SUV segment, which includes the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster. These vehicles have been responsible for their manufacturers grabbing 8.68% and 9% of the market share respectively. With the S101, U215 and U301, Mahindra will hope to recapture some of the ground that it has lost.

Pictures of the test mule of a new utility vehicle have surfaced on the internet. The vehicle, which was spotted near the Mahindra Research Centre in Chennai, has a more upright stance, shorter overhangs, flatter bonnet and more compact side profile than a Mahindra Scorpio. Additionally, this test mule has halogen tail lamps unlike the Scorpio's LEDs.
All these points lead us to believe that the vehicle spotted is the next-generation Mahindra Bolero (codename U301). Like the present-generation car, the U301 is likely to feature a body-on-frame construction. Reports suggest that the car will be available in various body lengths. There could even be a sub-4 metre version of the car.
While it is not clear which engine will be used to power the next-generation Bolero, it is rumoured that the car could be given the Quanto's 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder diesel motor.
The Bolero is a very important vehicle for Mahindra. It has been the company's (and India's) largest selling utility vehicle for a long time now, regularly touching sales figures of 10,000 units a month.
