Next-gen Maruti Dzire spied with a sunroof

Maruti might offer a single-pane sunroof on the new model.

The 2024 Maruti Suzuki Dzire has been spotted testing once again. This time, the compact sedan was seen in Himachal Pradesh while undergoing cold weather testing.

The upcoming Dzire will share its underpinnings with the next-gen Swift. While the overall shape of the car looks quite similar to the current model, it will get a reprofiled front grille and sweptback headlamps. It has a coupe-like roof line and a short rear section.

Interestingly, the test mule seen in these images is equipped with a sunroof, which suggests that Maruti might offer a single-pane sunroof on the new model. The Dzire is also expected to get features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, keyless entry, and cruise control.

The new Dzire will be powered by Maruti Suzuki's new Z-series 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 82 BHP and 108 Nm. The same unit will be available in the new-gen Swift as well.

My Dzire is 15 years old: Can I replace engine & continue ownership?

Want to understand the cost & legal implications in this scenario.

BHPian YogiBear recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I have my dear trusty Maruti Swift Dzire VXI that is nearing 15 years of age in 30 days. Except for some rattling noise in the suspension, it is spick and span to drive. I am now developing FOLO (fear of losing out) with the looming deadline to scrap this lovely possession of mine. And the spectre of having to invest 8L+ immediately isn't very attractive as well.

Is it possible that I get the ICE engine replaced with a new one from an authorized MASS and then the RTO allows me to continue running it for another 15 years??

What might be the cost and legal implications in this scenario?

Here's what GTO had to say on the matter:

No, and with good reason too.

  • India is a country of jugaad & fake paperwork. If the government allows this, we'll see all sorts of 20-year-old cars back on Delhi roads with supposed new engines. But which were never really fitted.
  • The cost of getting a new engine etc. with installation from MASS will exceed the value of your car.
  • 15 years is a good enough time to have enjoyed your Dzire, Now, its time for you to buy & experience something newer & fresher.

Here's what BHPian headbanger had to say on the matter:

Accept the inevitable and move ahead though it may feel grossly unfair deep within. Get a new car and extract as much as possible for the faithful Dzire by selling it.

Unfortunately for our tribe, we fit in that space within the financial pyramid of a country where it's easiest to hit by regulations. Try and plan your life around this simple fact.

I have a Ritz and Dzire that will be done within the next 2 years due to the same rule. The only difference is that this isn't my first experience. Hence I have accepted the unfairness of the framework and started to plan the future keeping Govt. whims as one of the parameters. Our first car Zen met with the same fate for no mistakes of ours. All I can say is I hear you, my friend.

Here's what BHPian ike had to say on the matter:

Even if it were possible, remember that you will have a car with a new engine but every other component(the chassis, the shell, upholstery etc.) will be fifteen years old. Such a car is likely to be a headache in the long run in terms of reliability. Not worth the hassle IMO, sometimes you have to just grin and bear it.

Here's what BHPian Fuldagap had to say on the matter:

To be honest, such a caveat can only be answered by an enthusiastic & well-read govt official or by a thorough agent (who would know a well-read govt official). I'm not sure even filing an RTI request would render this info.

What's sure is this, RTO needs to endorse & permit the change in engine before anybody changes his car's engine. People used to change their cars from petrol to diesel a lot. I'm sure some would be doing that even now. However, to use the engine change to avoid the 15-year ban in no way sounds even remotely mainstream.

If you don't know any concerned govt official through friends, try getting in touch with an agent. Visit the RTO and agents would approach you by themselves like honey bees.

Agents near your residence can also be found via Google search. Approaching the RTO officially might not be useful. If you are serious about it then you need to deviate from the normal approach to things to achieve it.

A Maruti service centre can give an estimate of the costs involved. In 2008, I saw a poster at a dealer's office in Ahmedabad advertising plonking a new Maruti engine in an old car, even the price was mentioned which I don't remember now.

It's indeed food for thought if this is really possible or not.

The report states that the new Swift and Dzire will use an all-new 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine (codenamed: Z12E). It will be paired with Toyota’s strong-hybrid system. Dzire owner gets a Nexon: Buying & ownership experience & upgrades

The engine has enough grunt to pull the SUV effortlessly, however, it becomes very noisy at high speeds, particularly in the Sports mode.

BHPian Valhalla recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hello, fellow BHPians,

I purchased a Tata Nexon XMS Red color in May 2022. It has clocked around 3000 KM.

Likes

  • Handling and driving dynamics.
  • Torquey yet fuel-efficient engine.
  • ESP Package and 5-star safety rating
  • Comfortable suspension and rigid body (no undulations on the highways are felt by the occupants).

Dislikes

  • NVH Levels at high speeds (had double damping done, but still engine is noisy over 130 KMPH+ in Sports mode).
  • Dealership and service centre experience.
  • AMT lag in city driving conditions.
  • Stock headlights and interior quality

My previous car ownership

I own a Maruti DZIRE ZXI 2015 model. It has clocked about 60000 KM and I wanted to upgrade to a pseudo "SUV" (since most Indian SUVs on sale are crossovers in reality).

New car requirements

Should be a diesel (or an efficient petrol), AMT, 6 gears, SUV stance, high ground clearance, compact to mid-size in length, in the budget of 15-16 lakhs.

Car hunt-  Alternatives considered

  • XUV 300- no black edition in AMT variants, no projector headlights in mid variants (W6 AMT), also Mahindra is reducing features very frequently.
  • Creta EX & Seltos HTK: AMT in only higher variants, lacklustre build quality. Both cars were not stable at high speeds.
  • Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun 1.5 TSI DSG models were out of my budget, 1.0 TSI had air-conditioning issues in both the VAG cousin test drive vehicles.
  • Tata Harrier was out of budget and only Nexon was the viable option, test drove a high-end AMT Nexon, liked and booked it.

Booking experience

Nexon XMS A Red Diesel was booked on 21-2-2022 and allotted on 6-5-2022. Booking experience was smooth but the delivery was quite rough as I had to follow up with the dealership executives for more than 5 days after the full payment on 17-5-2022. I had to pressurise the MD of the dealership through political interference just to get my vehicle delivered on 22-5-2022.

Extended warranty

Cost about Rs. 21000 - covers 1.25 lakh kilometers, 5 years. Initial warranty was for 75k km or 2 years.

Driving experience

Excellent driving dynamics, superior cornering ability, stable at very high speeds (I tried to get it up to 170 kmph), highway mile muncher- comfortable suspension setup and strong chassis torsional rigidity.

Safety equipment

Full ESP suite by Bosch, electronic stability, cornering stability, traction control system (front two wheels though), hill ascent, hill descent.

Brakes

Disc wiping through ESP, brake pre-fill, bite of the brakes is good, can get the car to a halt from triple digit speeds effortlessly.

Engine performance

Meaty engine with enough grunt to pull effortlessly. Very noisy compared to the competition particularly in the Sports mode at high speeds.

Fuel efficiency

City mode gives an average of 17 KMPL at 120kmph on highways and 13-14 KMPL in city driving conditions.

Sports mode gives an average of 16 KMPL at 120 kmph on highways.

AMT

Very laggy in city driving conditions, takes around 3 seconds to respond after crossing over a speed breaker, I've had to manually shift in order to derive the best out of the engine in city driving conditions. It's a whole different machine on highways in Sports mode though, responds sharply at higher speeds and ensures smooth overtaking.

Build quality & looks

  • Looks - Subjective. I find the front side better looking but the rear is polarizing.
  • Solid exterior - all doors felt hefty, mediocre interior, sub-standard plastic quality (felt like Renault Kwid from a few years ago).

AC

Chills up faster even if the outside temp. soar above 40 degrees centigrade.

MID

Felt like a toy car, Tata should've used Harrier or Altroz MID.

Steering

EPS works flawlessly, soft in the city and hard on highway driving conditions.

Niggles

  • Wheel Alignment issue from the factory (car was dragging to the left side by a point), sorted out during tyre upgrade from outside (not from TASS).
  • Paint chips here and there across the car (quality control from Tata is worst).3. Clunk sound from the front left side (fixed during the first service from TASS, a loose clamp below the diesel hand pump had been the culprit).

Service center experience

Poorly trained executives and technicians. They gave the car without sorting the above clunky sound. Had to force them again and get it fixed.

Upgrades done

  • Tyres: 195 60 R16 TO 215 60 R16
  • Wheels: Neo Royal Series alloy wheels
  • Tweeters: 4 - JBL
  • Reverse Parking camera
  • JK TYRE TPMS
  • White line painted black to make it look sportier on the sides and back of the car
  • Lights: Headlight low beam - HID, High beam - LED, Fog lamps - 3 in 1 Bi-LED projector
  • Manually adjustable IRVM
  • Horn upgrade
  • Leather seat covers, leather steering wheel cover, bumpers
  • Doors - double damping
