My Ecosport loses power & speed suddenly on the highway: Here's the fix

Ford's service centre agreed to replace all the parts and re-program the ECU.

BHPian W.A.G.7 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

So, just to put another perspective. I am facing the same issue with my 2018 Ecosport - Titanium 1.5L petrol. Prior to COVID-19 - Dhone Ford tried resolving the problem by "re-routing" the wiring harness (according to them) and flashing the ECU.

A couple of weeks back, we faced this problem a lot while driving on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. It could have turned fatal for us, as the power and speed dropped, almost instantly. Thankfully we were able to take it to the service lane on the left, all four times.

Today I gave it to Dhone Ford for another round of review. They scanned and traced the error to the powertrain module. The fault code shown was P2135. They agreed to replace all the parts and re-program the ECU. There may have been a silent recall for this problem, but I don't remember Ford giving any such advisory.

Here is the table from the rough estimate that they have provided.

BTW: Check row number 8 in the table. I have a feeling that this is tacked on - mine is a 1.5L Dragon engine, so why does the charge for the 1.0L G-TDI appear there? I am assuming this would be the 1.0L Ecoboost motor for which they have added the charge. On a hilarious note - they even added the charge for the adhesive tape!

I will get the car back on Monday, I will update here on how it goes.

How I got my 1.5L km run EcoSport running like new for just Rs 5,400

The car is peppier now & the mileage figures have also improved tremendously as well.

BHPian ABHI_1512 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Baahon is chugging along nicely after the 1,50k service which as expected, came to around ₹5400 out of which the servicing labour charges were around ₹2500. The usual suspects like oil change, oil filter change, and air filter change accounted for the rest. The discs are holding up well and don’t need replacement as of now. The rest of the mechanicals are all good and don’t need any interference. The battery is though, at the end of its life and will soon need replacement.

The car was getting a little sluggish and it was an indication that the EGR valve required a thorough cleaning. As Arjab also suggested above, the cleaning of the valve was impending anyways. So, the EGR valve was finally opened up and cleaned properly. The work was done courtesy of BHPian dip27in since the ASS’s will hardly do such a labour-intensive job. In fact, the ASS flatly said that Ford Cars don’t need EGR cleaning at all

The car was opened up and what followed was a test of patience. The opening of the EGR valve and the subsequent cleaning was as cumbersome and labouring as it can get. No wonder the ASS's don’t want to do that kind of work.

This was after almost 3 hours of labour that the entire assembly was finally out of the car. The amount of sludge which came out after cleaning was truly an eye-opener.

Anyways, the car is peppier now after the cleaning and is running like new. The mileage figures have also improved tremendously as well. So, with all these jobs done, Baahon needed a highway run and so the Independence Day weekend came in handy. A quick trip to nearby Murshidabad amidst blinding rain was made. Baahon performed just as it should and the car now looks good for munching more miles than ever. Sharing some pictures from the historical town of Murshidabad here :

So ending this post with a picture of Baahon in the midst of some monsoon greens.

Ford EcoSport diesel engine shuts down every 2-3 km: Advice?

SC said they were not absolutely sure about the issue but suggested changing the fuel pump.

BHPian Carpainter recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

My sister-in-law currently owns an Ecosport diesel manual (chauffeur driven) and for the last couple of weeks, she has been facing this issue (picture given below). This light comes on every now and then while driving and the engine suddenly shuts down in the middle of the road. There is also a message on the infotainment screen "Check immediately engine failure". Switching off the ignition and then switching it back on solves the problem but the light stays on and the engine shuts off again after 2-3 kms. She took it to the service centre. They said they were not absolutely sure about the issue but suggested changing the fuel pump for 30k which she didn't do obviously.

So does anybody have any idea about it or has anybody faced this before? She is actually thinking of selling it. Seems like Ford's service is not what it used to be since the departure.

Severe loss of power on my Ford EcoSport: Identifying cause & its fix

Earlier, this used to happen once in 3 months or so, but nowadays, it happens every single day.

BHPian sporteco1.5drgn recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hi, I am currently experiencing a severe problem with my Ford Ecosport petrol, which is the popping up of SEE MANUAL warning along with a WRENCH SYMBOL and in addition to that, loss of power.

When I press the accelerator in this situation, the car will vigorously vibrate and the rpm won't exceed 1500. But when I stop the car and restart it, the warning and loss of power will go off. Earlier, this used to happen once in 3 months or so, but nowadays, it happens every single day, causing me more trouble on the road.

Does anyone know what this might be or any possible (affordable) solutions?

Here's what BHPian codeseo had to say on the matter:

I had the same exact issue, which was pointed to the fuel filter. As per the service centre, the O-ring went kaput and the diesel was leaking. After getting the oil filter changed the vehicle was running for a month but again the error popped up.

Were you able to point out the solution?

Here's what BHPian Bhupesh_2628 had to say on the matter:

Hi sporteco1.5drgn,

I faced a similar problem in my EcoSport which I have documented below. After the replacement of the damaged part, I haven't faced any problems yet.

You should visit Ford Service Center and they will help you out in finding the root cause and the fixes.

Here's how I solved it:

I went to Ford Service Center & they said that the O2 Sensor wires have been chewed by the rats.

So, it had to be replaced. However, the part was not in stock & it took 3 days to arrive but a wrong part was ordered. So, had to wait 3 more days for the correct part to arrive.

Today, I went to Service Center & they replaced the part which costs Rs. 1600 & they also updated the PCM to the latest version. The total bill came to Rs. 1900.

Now, the issue is solved with the replacement of this part & car is running smoothly.

I asked a technician how to prevent rats from entering the engine bay. He suggested putting 'Kuber' in dry cloth & hang it on the bonnet joints or at the windshield washer bottle container. This will prevent them from entering. Has anyone done this technique?

Road trip with my EcoSport TDCi: Completed 1.50 lakh km of ownership

I have plans for some interior refurbishment but it keeps getting delayed.

BHPian ABHI_1512 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

So Baahon (EcoSport) completed 1,50,000 kilometres run without any drama. Got stuck in some worldly affairs lately and hence the delay in posting about the same. This number on the odometer was achieved in April itself during another weekend in the Dooars region of West Bengal. The car is doing well and munching on miles just as it’s wont. Will share the service update once I am back in the city and the service is completed. The battery will need replacement in a few months I guess and so will the discs. The brake discs have never been changed and the lines on the discs are pointing towards replacement.

Other than some minor niggle like little noise from the boot, there is no major work which needs attention as such. The present odometer reading should be around 1,51,500 or something. I have plans for some interior refurbishment but it keeps getting delayed for some reason or the other. Let’s see when that comes along.

Meanwhile, sharing some pictures from the trip to Paren and Suntalaykhola in this thread. Paren is a small hamlet near the Bhutan border and Suntalaykhola is a river stream site which is located in the Samsing region of the Kalimpong division. Both the properties were run by the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation and are well maintained very remote locations remote.

I also met a few BHPians from Calcutta during this weekend and that bonus. To meet your friends while on a trip is something that is very cherished by me at least. So much so, in true to the essence of the forum, some of us even had a meet-up at Pedong after driving from Lava together- just for the love of chitchatting over some good food.

It’s always wonderful to drive in tandem with friends who share the same zeal with you, here are two pictures which convey the same camaraderie.

During our return journey, I had stopped for breakfast at this wonderful tea joint near Siliguri, on the Odlabaari- Fulbaari road. The food is delightful and the ambience is even better. The owner has kept the place cosy and steadfastly kept everything organic. I had the fluffiest French toast and aromatic Darjeeling tea while missus had ordered for the ubiquitous Maggi which was served in a large cup. BHPian Rdas81 joined us after some time and we spent some time chatting before I started my return to Calcutta.

That’s the update as of now, will share the service report after I am back in the city. I hope I get to keep enjoying Baahon and its drive for as long as I can before some stupid rule comes into effect !!

How I've already spent Rs 5L on a used EcoSport I bought a year back

The power output at the wheels is 125 PS and 275Nm, thanks to a Stage 1+ remap from Wolf Moto.

BHPian jithin23 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

50,000 km in 14 months with my Red Dragon

Hey all, I’ve not been quite active on team bhp for a long time due to my professional commitments and very frequent travels which sometimes extend for several days (I’m out of town for almost every weekend after the Red Dragon arrived last year). Most of you might wonder how come I’ve driven so much, but yes, I take my car almost everywhere I go, be it to a nearby shop which is 5 km away or to Tawang which is 3,500 Kms away. That much is the bond with my Red Dragon and he has been my lucky charm through! I’ve made a lot of good friends who are like family, a lot of great memories with this car. This car somewhat reminds me of my Dad’s Red Yamaha RX100 which we repainted to black before selling as that bike was the one I grew up on and have travelled a lot on that bike! I still remember that bike’s engine number and the Made in Japan engraving above the gear lever.

Here's a glimpse of the Red Dragon now:

After changing the market lights to orange

Interior shot

I will share my travelogue of travelling across India by car within a few weeks from now.

Most of the drives were solo and planned on the go!

So far I’ve driven close to 50k kms in one year (48k to be precise) and I’ve had a stellar experience with Ford Service centres across the country be it for a simple repair or a clutch job. I’ve tuned my car from Wolf Moto (Engineering Exponent) with a stage 1+ remap and the car is quite peppy after.

The remap. The power output at the crank is 133PS and 295Nm. The power output at the wheels is 125 PS and 275Nm. These are the results of a Dyno test by Harmonixx.

I didn’t face any issues even while driving in the Mountains of Ladakh with the Wolf remap. Thank you, Jayant, Rakshit, Prajwal, Sreekanth Ettan and Rajeev Ettan! In the Ford community, if anyone wants a remap for their Diesel Ford, all they say now at wolf is I want Jithin’s map. That’s level of reliability the map has as this map has seen all terrains and calibrated for a balance of FE and Power.

I’m a person who is curious and determined to do something different and unique in my car. Over this year as my hands and head won’t stay quiet, I have done a few mods on my own.

Whatever I post here, I hope it benefits the community and Ford owners. Some mods I have already posted previously, so I’d be posting ones which are new and afresh. That gives me a different level of joy and keeps me happy! And most of the mods are done independently by me(though I work for an IT company by profession) as well as my love for automobiles from childhood makes it even more enticing. All the mods are carried out on my car only first and only then do I suggest it to others.

I’ll share the total expenditure for all my mods below. Whenever I get free time, I will share all the mods list in both my cars on a separate thread.

Mods Cost

All the mods are sourced from Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and different parts of the world, so I do not remember the exact location for most of the mod part sources, but I can certainly help someone find out some parts if necessary.

  • Wolf Stage 1+ remap(Done on Day 1 when I bought the car): 28,000
  • Dyno Test by Harmonixx: 5,500. I decided to get this done as no BS4 Stage 1+ remap had the exact figures for the power and torque mentioned and I thought that if I get it done, it will help thousands of people in deciding on a remap.
  • Headlights, roof and mirror blackening: 12,000
  • Upgraded low beams from Automotive Light Experts: 15,000
  • Downsized to 16” Thunder Alloys(Set of 5): 23,000
  • Fiesta ST Diesel Speedometer(Imported from UK): 15,000
  • Focus ST Steering(Imported from UK): 12,000
  • Sync 3 Nav Module(from a used Endevaour): 11,000
  • HID Fogs: 5,000
  • Euro Spec AC cluster: 15,000(For the controller, wiring and bezel(I’m yet to re-do the bezel and will complete it soon). This AC control is enabled in voice and climate controls on Sync 3(first in India).
  • The Euro-spec AC cluster

I’m getting a dual-zone AC controller soon.

Satya has mentioned elaborately on the connectors part and here are the links for the connectors for reference:

Female plug needed for global variants

Male plug which connects to the female harness

  • TPMS: 7,000 for a set of 4 sensors
  • Shelby Grill (made by 6th-mile customs): 9,000. For this mod, I had to give a used Ford Raptor-style grill and 6th-mile customs did the custom mesh for me.

  • BMC Air Filter: 7,000. I do not suggest a BMC filter for a diesel Ecosport as there’s no significant difference in terms of output.
  • Thunder Bumper Applique: 3,000
  • Digital Speedometer: The cost for this I spent was about 20,000. This has an interesting story though.

One of my friends from Bombay had given me a completely broken meter (The meter is a ford Puma meter though) and told me “Jithin, do whatever you want with this meter and please do not pay me for it”. I said okay and he shipped the meter to me. To my dismay, when I installed the meter, there was a huge crack in the LCD.

Then I approached all the European forums and my sources and everyone told me that full meter replacement is the way to go and nobody has ever refurbished the Ford digital meter. I was still thinking about how to source the LCD alone and I did some digging and found out that the display was available on AliExpress and this LCD is common across Puma, Escape, Kuga and Focus. This gave me some hope and I approached A close friend of mine in Mysore who has some connections in China. Even the Aliexpress seller was curious to know if the meter will work after the LCD change. We got the meter LCD within a week and I spent one whole night dismantling and fixing the LCD.

The digital speedometer disassembled

Final results

After fixing the meter, I plugged it into my car and the display was in MPH and the dials weren’t working when the engine was on. Then I used my car’s as built file and everything started working perfectly including the readings in KPH. I thought my mission was complete with this, but the elephant in the room was locking the meter in place. So I had to trim certain portions of the speedo housing near the Dashboard and the speedometer itself and this was the most painful part in this process. However, the cuts aren’t visible as the speedo cowl covers it all. After 2 hours, the meter was sitting flush with all the panels intact.

Total mods cost: Rs 172,500

Here’s a video of me describing my car’s build in case you are running short on time.

Additionally, I worked on building the un-launched EcoSport too during Nov-Dec 2022 for an acquaintance in Bangalore. Most of you might have seen this car posted on Carblog India. That was the car I had worked on. He had a BS4 Titanium+ with fly audio and we went all out in changing the interior to the black dashboard, Changing the alloys to the un-launched version, converting from Fly Audio to Sync 3 and the whole front Fascia change. Personally, I prefer the current-gen front bumper as it’s a timeless and elegant design. Due to time constraints, I haven’t been able to post any of
these.

P.S: I have shared all this info to help fellow owners make an informed decision and not for any commercial intent

The un-launched facelift EcoSport bumper suits white! Helped a fellow enthusiast get the un-launched facelift EcoSport bumper at his residence in Kolkata and we got it shipped it from Chennai.

The total cost of rebuilding this car was:

  1. Sync 3 (consists of Sync 3 screen[16,000]
  2. APIM module[11,000]
  3. Audio control module[10,000]
  4. GPS antenna[1,500]
  5. Illuminated USB ports[4,500]
  6. Center Speaker, Bezel for the centre speaker and sync 3 bezel[5,000]
  7. Wiring Bunch from EcoSport S[13-15,000 depending on the seller]) Rs. 63,000 is the cost only for the parts and these prices vary for every part as I had sourced it from some Insiders at Ford.
  8. Bumper with the Bezel and DRL: About 25,000. We took the help of a known mechanic for removing and reassembling the bumper, Dash and Sync 3 wiring
  9. Euro Spec AC panel: The same cost as my car
  10. Alloys (again depending on the vendors): We picked it for about 40,000 for a set of 5.
  11. Cruise Control and TPMS: For the parts alone we spent about 13,000.

Total Expenditure: Rs 154,000

Here’s a video of what we have done on that car as well:

Fuel and Maintenance:

I’ve consumed 2,800 litres of diesel in 1 year and 2 months (For 50,000 km running). The total fuel cost alone is Rs. 257,600 (assuming Rs 92/Litre). Tolls I’ve spent about 20-25,000 through my usage.

This is the best part now! In terms of maintenance, I’ve spent Only 5,000 for every service apart from Clutch replacement (14,000) Tyre change: Yokohama Earth 1(30,000), first 2 tyres at Gangtok and the next 2 In Bangalore by Keerthi(Tyre Stacks,

TC Palya road) and Battery Change(4,000) from Ford itself at Saluja Ford, Chandigarh. Alignment and Balancing I do it every 10,000 km.

Detailing at Turtle Wax: 12,000

Post detailing!

So the total cost for my joy is Rs 3,55,600. I’d say it’s very reasonable as I’ve travelled across 24 states in India and this car has been like a mini house on wheels for me. Heck, even flights to travel so much would have been way more expensive(also the unlimited luggage carrying capacity while driving your car is priceless!). I haven’t included the washing cost as that is frequent and imperative to keep the car clean.

The overall ownership cost with mods is Rs 5,40,900. I could have cleared my car loan with this amount but the joy, the time spent travelling and understanding my car and the experiences that I’ve acquired by travelling across India cannot be replaced with money and it won’t do any justice for the loan I’m paying if I’m not using my car to the fullest! Even Red Dragon’s twin brother the Blue Baby is running fine and covers miles equally.

I do have a few more enhancements to be done on the Red Dragon, those are EGR and Intercooler clean and Bette brakes as the brakes are not completely sufficient for a remapped car.

I’m contemplating Brembo or EBC with disc change and TPMS display in sync 3 (most of the Europeans, Thai and Vietnamese people have done it but I’m asking them to ship the module for an EcoSport so that I can study and custom tweak it to show TPMS and some values such as exact oil temperature and boost pressures).

The one I'm aiming to get on sync 3 next is the TPMS and telemetry data pic. Works on Android auto too as per Polish sources.

Someday I wish to add even rear discs and a 4x4 1.5 EcoBlue Diesel manual engine with a 6-speed gearbox from UK or Germany. Till then, Keep revving and travel often!

Traded in my EcoSport for a Hyryder: Pre & post delivery experience

It's not a fun car to drive but I try & to make it fun by achieving the best fuel efficiency I can on every drive.

BHPian Cruzn recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Finally received my S variant after 4 months. Before I mention my experience, I would like to also talk about how I came to this decision. I used to have a 2019 EcoSport AT which I treasured. It was an absolute joy to drive and would never have given it up if it wasn’t for the mileage. With the current rate of petrol and a mileage of 10 km/l, I was spending 10k a month just to fill her up.

I heard about the Taigun having slightly better mileage and also the same fun experience, so decided to take a look. I had pretty much decided on the Taigun and doing the test drive was just going to be a formality.

One morning, while my family was getting ready to go for the test drive, I was surfing on YouTube and came across a video for Toyota’s next vehicle. I saw the word ‘Hybrid’ and immediately remembered my experience when I first drove the Prius a few years back in the US. I told my family that we aren’t going anywhere. I decided that I would wait and see how this turned out.

As we all saw, the launch was a disaster with the pricing being so secretive for quite a few days. Nevertheless, I was still adamant about checking the car out.

Pre delivery experience

I had initially booked the G variant with Nandi Toyota (Banaswadi) on October 10th. After my second test drive on October 20th, I noticed the cabin was warmer than usual. Driving the V variant I realised that the sunroof was the cause. I then decided to downgrade to the S variant. Looking at some of the reviews here, I'm glad I did! Apart from the extra airbags, I don't miss the other features missing between the G and the S variants.

My SA Richard was kind enough to keep me posted on the status periodically. My only concern was selling my EcoSport on time so that I can make the payment as soon as the PDI was done.

On the day of the PDI, I received a quote from Spinny but decided to go with Toyota instead so that I could drive in with my EcoSport and drive out with my Hyryder. Unfortunately, that couldn't happen as Toyota's policy was to complete the trade-in process before the delivery. This was the only disappointment in my entire experience with Toyota. I just wished I had another day with my EcoSport.

Post delivery

Received my car on Feb 5th. Now we’ve all read and watched the reviews, so I’m not going to repeat the same. However, I would like to repeat that it is awfully quiet in EV mode. I hadn’t informed my driver and he ended up restarting the car about 4 times before he realised that the car was actually on. Hence, please inform your drivers.

The pros are the same as others have mentioned so will go through some of the cons (some of which have also been mentioned by others) that I’ve noticed so far after 300 km:

The driver's door does not close easily. On average both my driver and I take at least 3 attempts to close it. This was something I noticed during my test drives and PDI as well but was told this is normal. Is it though? The other doors are fine but is there a reason that this happens only with the driver’s door?

It’s 2023 and we still see cars with just 2 airbags. We keep reading about how automakers care about their customers. Really Toyota?

Finally, this is in no way a fun car to drive. But I try and make it fun by achieving the best mileage I can on every drive. My driver and I do get some honking and abuses hurled at us once in a while but that’s alright, we still reach our destination safely, on time and with an average mileage of 27.6 km/l.

Haven’t seen a lot of reviews on the S variant, so please feel free to contact me for queries.

From West Bengal to North Sikkim: 1500 km road trip in Ford EcoSport

The car performed superbly throughout the trip. On the serpentine mountain roads, the handling & the steering feel was putting a wide grin on my face.

BHPian H0RSEPOWER recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Sikkim is a state which is closest to both my state & my heart as I came here for my honeymoon 7 years back apart from multiple other trips as well! The state is having so many small & large waterfalls, Himalayan passes, high-altitude lakes, forests, snow-covered small mountain villages & serpentine roads. In a word, it’s simply splendid!

Though I have been to North Sikkim itself thrice before this trip, none of them was self-driven! So when I could finalise the days of leave I made a sudden plan to go there in the last week of December 2022. It was finalised only a couple of days before the trip, so the preparation was really quick.

A few starting snaps from the trip:

25th December

We started from our hometown in Krishnanagar on the Xmas day morning. Currently, the road condition from Krishnanagar to Siliguri is quite good after the opening of the Dalkhola bypass. Though some repair work on the Farakka barrage was going on, it did not give much of a problem. We hardly had to wait for 10 minutes or so. Currently, the only thing pending in the entire stretch is the Raiganj railway over the bridge. We took the only break at Ghar Dhaba for having lunch just after crossing Dalkhola.

We reached Siliguri by the evening. After taking some rest went for a sumptuous dinner for some typical Bengali food in Bhooter Raja Dilo Bor, which is a renowned Bengali restaurant chain. The food was as usual mouth-watering.

The delicious dinner at Bhooter raja dilo bor Siliguri outlet

26th December

We woke up in the morning and had a call to an agent regarding the permits for North Sikkim. We have already sent our documents a day earlier. And he confirmed that he would send the permits by WhatsApp. Then after having breakfast we started our journey to Dzongu, a small hamlet in North Sikkim. We skipped going to Gangtok. Just before Rangpo, there is a place called Melli. We suddenly stopped there after seeing the signboard of river rafting! It was a shock to my wife who was really not in any mood to do rafting. But after pursuing her for half an hour she finally agreed!

It was a superb experience to do the white water rafting there! After completing it & changing our wet dresses, we started our journey after a few hours! At Rangpo we took the new bridge which is made for private and goods vehicles. Then we proceeded towards Mangan. The road condition was bad at places. After reaching Singtam we received the permits over WhatsApp & made a few printouts of the same, as it would have been not possible to find places to have the printouts of the permits.

We reached The Mandarin Retreat in Dzongu for our stay by the afternoon. It was very close to the Teesta river & was newly built. The entire area was surrounded by orange orchards. And those trees were full of oranges! It was a very calm place without any other tourists. We spent a really nice evening over there.

The owner & his cousin were chitchatting with us for quite some time. The owner’s cousin was pursuing B.Tech & was in the final year, and was asking me about my project that I did during my college days more than a decade back! I was feeling embarrassed as I forgot most of the technical details about the same. Then we were talking about the local culture & development plan for the local people as well. After that, we had dinner & went to bed.

Ford EcoSport service updates after a recent road trip: 1.40L km done

The total cost including the service and labour charges came to around ₹13,000.

BHPian ABHI_1512 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Baahon just crossed the One lakh forty thousand mark some time back and the usual service was done at the Ford Authorised Service Center at Calcutta - Ganges Ford. The service experience, just as usual, was great and it couldn’t have been better. The front ball bearing hubs were changed and so did the two bar bush stabilisers. The car probably now needs an interior makeover, just to make things a little interesting inside.

The following items were changed:

  1. Oil Filter
  2. Gasket plug
  3. AC Filter
  4. Air Filter
  5. Engine Oil
  6. Bar Bush stabilisers
  7. Front Bearings
  8. Retainer Log Nut

The total cost including the service and labour charges came to around ₹13,000. After the change of bearings, the car is back to its original real self. After the NE expedition, the car needed some thorough cleaning as well and which was done at the service centre only. Ganges Ford has two service outlets here in Calcutta and the one at Maheshtala is pretty efficient in the washing and cleaning department. So, Baahon is doing what it does best- bringing a smile every time I drive it.

The recent NE travel sojourn is documented in the thread.

Finding a fix: My 2015 EcoSport gearshifts have become a bit tight

I've been having to put in twice the effort to shift gears.

BHPian Anees_Offl recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Team,

I have a Ford Ecosport (Diesel) bought in Dec 2015. Has run around 70k kilometres as of now.

Since I continue to work from home, I use my car only once or twice a week. And once in three months, I drive to my hometown Trichy.

I have had this problem with a tight gearbox for the last one year. During my last service at Ford, I did inform the guys over there about this issue. They informed me that changing the gearbox oil would help. It did help for a little time but the issue is back.

On August 14th I drove to Salem - Trichy - Chennai. On my way to Salem, I had to put in twice the effort to shift gears. From Salem to Trichy, it was not that tight but yes additional effort had to be put in.

What would be the reason for the issue? How to rectify this, and how much would it cost?

Regards

BHPian carthick1000 had a few queries:

Some questions:

  1. Is it tight to shift from gear to neutral or neutral to any gear, when the engine is running and the clutch is pressed?
  2. Do you feel the same tightness to shift when the engine is running and not running?
  3. Is there a difference in tightness between forward and reverse gears?

Replying to BHPian carthick1000's questions, BHPian Anees_Offl answered:

  • A1: Yes, it is very tight when I shift from neutral to 1st, 2nd and 3rd. When I move from 3rd to 4th, and 4th to 5th it is relatively easy.
  • A2: When the engine is not running, the effort is less. When the engine is running, I need to put in more effort.
  • A3: No difference. It's the same.

Here's what BHPian ObsessedByFIAT had to say on the matter:

I can think of two reasons which can cause gears slot with difficulty:

  1. The gear boot sits at the bottom of the gear lever. I believe it's a rubber part and wears out with time. Had this issue in my Figo diesel.
  2. The other can be a worn-out clutch assembly. Was the clutch assembly (clutch plate, pressure plate and the release bearing) changed recently?

Here's what BHPian amit_purohit20 had to say on the matter:

  1. First try to adjust the clutch by reducing Freeplay ie the clutch will start biting at the pedal's uppermost position while releasing the clutch. Hopefully, this solves the problem.
  2. Check for free movement of gear shifter cables and greasing of the gear shifting mechanism. Do not replace unnecessarily the cables and gear shifting tower.
  3. If you have a hydraulic clutch check your CSC (slave cylinder) for leakages or wear. Replacement should solve the problem. But as you said you have no problem in 4th and 5th gear I doubt whether this is the issue. CSC going kaput will make clutch hard irrespective of any gear and it might have an impact on shifting forces. -Gearbox needs to be opened.
  4. Replace with a new clutch, including the clutch release bearing. - Gearbox needs to be opened.
  5. If your synchronizer synchronizing rings are worn out, replace all of them in one go for all the synchronizers. - Gearbox needs an overhaul.
