Rumour: Mahindra developing electric SUV & performance car

Mahindra Electric is reportedly working on a 380V electric powertrain that will soon make it to production under an electric SUV and a performance car. This new powertrain was previewed under the e2o Sport hatch concept at last year's Auto Expo in Greater Noida.

Currently, Mahindra's Electric range consists of the e2oPlus, eSupro and eVerito, which are offered with either of the two available powertrains - 48V and 72V. With the larger 380V setup, Mahindra is aiming to enhance its car's range as well as performance. This new electric powertrain is expected to be used in an electric SUV, which might be based on the Mahindra Scorpio or the XUV500. Additionally, the company might also employ it for its range of commercial vehicles.

The manufacturer has also reportedly indicated that it will be developing a new high-end electric performance car. Reports further suggest that Mahindra will be using its racing expertise from the Formula-E race team to develop the powertrain, while the design will be taken care of by Pininfarina.

Mahindra to build world's most affordable electric SUV

Mahindra is reportedly working on a fully-electric compact SUV, which is being developed by its electric arm, formerly known as Mahindra Reva.

Internally codenamed the S107, the electric compact SUV is Mahindra's next project in the electric car domain after the recently launched e-Verito. The company had earlier announced that Mahindra Electric will be launching two new products this year. The said electric compact SUV currently seems to be the first priority for the electric car company.

The company is also planning to release an electric and a CNG variant of its popular hatchback crossover - the Mahindra KUV1OO.

Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra and Tata Motors had earlier formed a consortium, under which, the companies will contribute to develop certain components of electric and hybrid vehicles. This will reduce the Research & Development cost burden on a single firm, and will thus help in making the cars more affordable.
