XUV300 made a loud bang at 3-digit speed & decelerated, had to call RSA

It happened while I was on a road trip with my wife. I was quite surprised as I got the 60,000 km service of the car done just 6 days ago.

BHPian Duckdoc recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I have a Mahindra XUV300 W8 O, bought in March '21. My wife and I had planned and did a 4000 km round trip to Central India starting the first Sunday of this month.

The first leg was 1030 km to Maharashtra.

We were making good time when 30 km past Cuddapah while travelling at low triple figures, I heard a loud bang, the vehicle decelerated, and the check engine light came on. I was surprised as I had done the 60,000 km servicing just six days earlier.

I stopped the vehicle on the side of the road and called RSA. They were extremely courteous and arranged a tow truck, which took an hour and a half to arrive.

I drove the car up the ramp and to the flatbed, and both of us sat in the car, enjoying a commanding view of the surroundings on the way to the ASC at Cuddapah. We thought we might enjoy the situation as there was nothing else to do.

As it was a Sunday, they initially said they could look at it only on Monday, but with some persuasion, they took a look at it then. The intercooler to the turbo hose had blown.

After replacing it and clearing the error code, we managed to reach our destination that day and complete our trip.

The story doesn't end here. Two days after reaching home and 4,000 km later, on the way to work, the check engine light came on. There was a whistling sound when the revs went up. I drove slowly to my regular ASC. The clip fastening the intercooler hose had come loose. After securing it again and clearing the error code, it has been fine so far.

The intercooler hose had been replaced in Oct '21 as there was a recall. I am unsure if the intercooler hose has an intrinsic problem. I have decided to travel with some scotch tape for an emergency fix, as everything else is fine with the vehicle.

Here's what BHPian sagarpadaki had to say about the matter:

The second time, the loose clip can be due to improper fastening when the hose was replaced. So I would not say that the intercooler hose failed twice.

PS - My bad. Did not read that hose was replaced in 2021.

Is there a chance that the hose is rubbing against something that is causing it to chaff and fail? Can you check the engine bay around the area where the hose failed to see if there are any touch points for the hose?

Here's what BHPian PaddleShifter had to say about the matter:

Issues like these cause loss of power and the car fails to accelerate. The car also shows signs of starting issues (longer crank etc.). Have experienced this twice in our family cars having turbo diesels. Did you experience any abnormality such as loss of power or sluggish performance when this happened?

Every owner having a turbo engine car needs to be able to identify the signs of a leak due to a broken hose or a loose connection/clamp as it is very stressful when this happens and the car stalls in the middle of nowhere.

If a car shows loss of power and stalls with a check engine light, the first thing to do is to check the hoses from the intercooler to the turbo, near the intercooler and then the turbo. If it is identified, a jugaad solution can be done to make the car drivable to the ASC using M-seal etc (have read people doing this on the road).

My experience with Skoda's RSA service after my Superb broke down

Learnt a few new things about my sedan, including that it has a smart alternator.

BHPian sudhir_vag recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

What's all fun if things go smoothly all day? So finally after running nearly 27,000 Km in a year and being the best man at my wedding. Superb failed to start all of a sudden yesterday morning. I drive from my in-law's place (around 70 km), went inside the house for 20 mins and when I cranked it again I was greeted with fireworks lighting in the instrument cluster and resistance from brakes.

Contacted my SA immediately and he found out it was due to the battery issue. And suggested calling RSA. Skoda India has now tied up now with Europ Assistance India for RSA. RSA helpline was pretty helpful and the technician reached my home with jump-start instruments within the stipulated time (90 mins). We were able to jump-start the car. But when after on and jump-starting the car it failed to crank again. We figured the issue to be with the jump start battery and with the help of a local battery dealer the car started all good. Initially, I suspected the issue to be with the Alternator as like conventional cars with a voltmeter plugged in on pressing the accelerator input wasn't increasing.

Folks at SGA Skoda suggested I can either drive the car or if I am not confident they are happy to send a recovery van. Decided to drive down to the service station at Coimbatore which is around 45 km from my home.

SA and the technician were ready to receive the vehicle. OBD and battery tests were done.

Alternator diagnostics was run and it did not throw any errors. The battery test showed recharge status meaning the battery is not in a good state. And I asked questions about the alternator and I came to know about something called Smart Alternators it was news to me.

The reason why the voltmeter reading is the same is apparently the vehicle is Smart Alternator where charging is controlled by ECU.

It was done to comply with emission norms and the engine is charged on demand and when the foot is let off the accelerator. At that time voltage from the alternator spikes up fast and does a fast charge of the battery. During acceleration the ECU can effectively turn off the alternator, and this means the vehicle has more power as the alternator bears no load on the engine, and on overrun the alternator can be allowed to overcharge as this does not affect vehicle performance.

The battery is being replaced under the warranty and SA has confirmed the vehicle will be handed over today.

The new thing that I figured out in Skoda Service this time once required repairs are found customers get a mail/sms with details of the work and the cost for the same. Only after the customer has approved for the same digitally is work carried out.

My Tork Kratos R breaks down on a hot day: RSA & repair experience

While the whole repair was handled professionally, the turn-around time could be improved.

BHPian Venky03 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I've been using the bike mostly for weekend rides, on 4th March while riding towards Navi-Mumbai the motor cut off mid-ride and the bike was not responding to accelerator inputs. It was not switching to any of the Eco, City or Sports modes and there was no warning before the cut-off; fortunately, I was on the left-most lane so it was a tad easier to handle the whole situation. Initially, I thought it might be the stand sensor or the cut-off button causing the issues, it was peak afternoon on a very hot day so I physically inspected the battery (it was cool to touch) and motor (very warm), called the Tork Motors toll-free and explained the issue to them, they took a while to call-back, meanwhile, I tried turning on the bike again and it was able to switch to the ride modes so I started the ride back home after waiting for 30 - 40 mins. I encountered the same issue 2 or 3 times but reached home safely and called them up again to inquire if it was a software issue or a hardware issue, since it was almost late evening and the bike was safely parked I did not push for RSA.

Called them back on Monday to inquire about the same and they mentioned that I'll need to RSA the bike to the Pune service centre, called the RSA toll-free and arranged for a pickup. They came to pick up the bike around 3-4 hrs later.

They mentioned that it was a temperature sensor issue and that it has been replaced, the bike was delivered back to my home after around 5-6 days. While the issue was rectified in 3 days the unavailability of RSA from their side caused further delays. The entire process: Pickup > Replacement of the sensor > Delivery was FOC and handled professionally but the turn-around time can definitely be improved.

Rs 500 part failure on my Ford Figo left me stranded, had to call RSA

This part generally fails after 5-6 years and I have heard many people being stranded because of this.

BHPian AYP recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

A couple of events took place recently.

Event 1

I got to use one of the least used features of the Figo, or for that matter, any car. The warning triangle.

The gear lever came loose and wasn't slotting in any gear and as a result, my car came to a halt right on top of a bridge on the Thane Belapur road, just before Ikea in Turbhe. This happened on 13th January at around 6:30 pm. I wish that it had stopped a few hundred metres before as stopping right in the middle of a bridge was frustrating and embarrassing at the same time. I called HDFC Ergo and the pickup truck was allocated within 30 minutes though it took him an hour to arrive at my location.

Some pics from the unfortunate event.

It was good to see that they had sent a pickup with a flatbed at the back.

I sat in the car while they transported the car to the Ford service centre. When the flatbed was being lifted, it felt like I was on a ride since I was sitting in the car while looking down from the bridge.

What was the problem you may ask? The same old gear shifter bush which costs 500 bucks. This part generally fails after 5-6 years and I have heard many people being stranded because of this. This was an issue with the previous gen Figo as well since it also had the same gearbox.

Our earlier Fiesta (2007, 1.4 petrol) never encountered this problem for all the 9 years it was with us. Truth be told, the gear shifts (especially the 3rd and the 4th gear) had become extra rubbery for the past few months but I chose to ignore it. I have made a mental note to myself that I will get it changed again proactively in 2027. If you do own a car with the IB5 gearbox, it is better to get it changed proactively. Will hardly cost you 500 bucks. The part number of the bush.

I also got the brake pads changed. I had changed my pads earlier at 17k, 2nd service. The replacement pads lasted for about 3.5 years and 14k kms. I also got the rear bumper replaced under insurance. A bike had rammed into my bumper a few months prior during monsoon. The damage was minor though.

In my vehicle check-up report, I observed that my rotors are in the 'yellow' category (green being good and red being bad) and may need replacement next year if not in 2023. Has anyone got them replaced? How much do they cost?

The damaged bumper

Event 2

Visited the Samruddhi Expressway on the 25th from Navi Mumbai. I only went till Aurangabad which is 98km from the Shirdi interchange. The total distance was slightly over 700km.

The detailed post can be found here.

The current odometer reading is at 31,750 kms. Next update is mostly going to be about the tyre change. I plan to stick to the stock size to avoid warranty issues and to avoid any error in speedo reading. I also plan to take the extended warranty for the 7th year in July.

Battery drain issues on my Creta & pathetic experience with Hyundai RSA

After much deliberation and escalation they eventually agreed to send both the technician and tow truck together.

BHPian abhisekbit recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Complete lack of Common Sense from Hyundai RSA:

So my Hyundai Creta 1.5 petrol manual (Age 1 yr, 12k km ODO) had a drained Battery (2nd Time in 3 months) when the car was not started for 2-3 weeks at a stretch.

1st time issue: Called Hyundai RSA, very prompt in their service and sent a person to jump start the car within an hour. The person came in a scooty and jump started the car and asked me to drive for 7-8km or keep the engine started with 1000-2000 rpm for 1 hr. I asked him if he could follow me while I drive and if the engine stops and he could again jump start. I offered him a drive route which he will take to return home and he obliged. Drove for 5-6kms, stopped and started the engine and the engine started. No issues. Thanked him and left

2nd time Issue: Me being out of home location, the car was again kept idle for 3weeks and my mom wanted to visit someone and use the car. Again the car would not start. Called Hyundai RSA, again a person came within 1hr and jump started the car and told to keep the car on for 1hr with minimum revv which my driver did. But this time this guy was in a hurry and left within 10mins saying his job is done. After 1hr when my driver restarted the car, it would not turn on. All this was happening in the garage.

So I called the service center and explained to them the issue and asked them for a home service and pickup of the car. But came to know that this service is chargeable(650+ GST + 350 pickup charges, pickup and drop is only free when you send for service). They asked me to contact RSA and get the car towed to the service center free of cost as the car was within warranty (big mistake to save a few bucks),

So next day I called up the RSA and asked them for a towing service. In the next 30mins I got a call from the tow truck driver asking about the location. Asked him if he has a jumper cable and battery as he needs to start the car so that the steering unlocks and he can take it out of the garage. He said it was not his responsibility to start the car and he can only tow...!!!!

Called Hyundai RSA again and to my dismay they said as per process they will send a separate technician to start and take the car out of the garage and then a tow truck would come to tow the car. My argument was if the car is left on the road(alley) it would be an issue as it would block traffic. Again they started explaining the process and I got irritated and gave them a mouthful and asked for escalation. My argument was once my Honda Amaze had the same starting issue in the middle of the road at night and Honda sent a tow truck where the tow truck person had a jumper cable, battery and and managed to start the car before towing. So I had the same expectation.

After much deliberation and escalation they eventually agreed to send both the technician and tow truck together....and guess what...!!!! the same impatient Technician who came yesterday arrived without the tow truck and the tow truck was minimum 1.5hrs away...!!!!

Again the same argument and remotely doing all these calls and follow up irritated me no ends.

This time the technician jump started the car, kept it on for 15mins, stopped and started and it started normally. Tried multiple times and it worked. Maybe it had some juice from yesterday when it was kept on for nearly an hour.

Cancelled the tow truck and arranged for a driver personally and asked him to drop to the nearest service center for a battery checkup and possibly a battery change under warranty.

The entire episode has left a sour taste in ownership.

Always was of the opinion that Hyundai service was excellent until now when experiencing 1st hand.

Couple of areas of concern:

  • 1 yr old car with 12k in the ODO is having a dead battery if not started for 2-3 weeks. This cannot be normal because I have seen my relative's Hyundai Grand i10 and i20 sitting idle for more than a month or two. Even my old Honda Amaze with a 4yr old battery started normally when it was sitting idle for a month during COVID-19 time. Before anyone asks, there is no external accessories except the touchscreen as this is a Executive version. There might be some current leakage here but let Hyundai establish that. I made it a point to disable the quick boot option in the Android Headunit. Also the same Headunit was installed in my old car(i ported the same unit from my old car to this) and it never had any issues.
  • What is this process with Hyundai RSA ? Completely lacks logic and common sense. They are saying once the technician starts the car and if you feel there is an issue with the battery then drive to the service center. What happens if the car stops in between and cannot be started. Their argument is then call the towing service and then the car would be towed, so basically asking the customer to be stranded on the road. Also a complete lack of Communication and Coordination between Hyundai RSA, Alliance or something who assigns another 3rd party for the towing service/technician plus the people on ground.

To top that up, once it reached the service center, the service advisor's first dialogue was -- this is quite normal. If you don't start the car for 15 days the battery will be dead. Asked to give me this in writing and then he said would look into the issue and revert back. Lets see where this goes.

Got scammed & mentally harassed by fake RSA service calls; Lost Rs 4500

I was amazed by the sheer confidence and audacity. Unlike regular fraudsters, they didn't hang up the call but kept calling me again and again.

BHPian Scammed_NowWhat recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

10 days back I received a call asking how many kilometres my honda car has travelled after the last service? I said I didn't know and the caller asked if she could call the next day.

A few days later she called me to tell me that they were sending RSA card from Honda. I believed it must be a genuine Honda so I trusted them. She had told me it would be Rs 3500.

I also received a WhatsApp message from Shiprocket that my courier will be delivered that day. It was Rs 4500 now. I discussed with my family that I was 3500 on call. But we trusted Honda so went ahead with the plan.

Received the package and paid Rs 4500 to the delivery boy. Instantly got a call from the centre saying you have received the card and now send the photos on WhatsApp. This is when my instincts clicked but it was already late. I contacted my dealer who denied any such scheme.

I called the centre number and she said that it is a genuine registered company and they have bought my details from the insurance company that registered my car. I said I wanted my money back and she said "I guarantee you I will return your money tomorrow morning. I am also a human. I have to tell my parents where I work. Please be assured."

The next day I got a call from her senior who said that she will send me the recording and she never said she was from Honda. She had said "service 24x7" so she will not return the money because I consented to it. They denied admitting that they were fraudsters. They were saying things like "we are a registered company. You called my employee at midnight. I am calling you from my personal number. Which company does that? You have to trust me." There was no Truecaller complaint against their numbers. She even used reverse psychology on me and said that I will face karma for getting angry at her.

They asked me to send card pictures on Whatsapp and the delivery boy's number to authorize my card. When I deleted the messages she replied "aisa thode hota hai". She called me many times and when I picked up I heard another girl saying to some other customer in the background "yes be assured you will get your money back". She even said that I was lying that I had received the card when I refused to send its pictures.

This is how I figured out that they are rooting me in for an even bigger scam by promising to return the money. I blocked the numbers and considered the fraudulent money to be a type of charity donation to someone who might have needed it for something in their life.

I called the number on the card. The man who picked up the call acted shocked that I called them a scam. He said it was genuine RSA service and I should not bug him because I might need to call him someday for service. I was amazed by the sheer confidence and audacity. Unlike regular fraudsters, they didn't hang up the call, but kept calling me again and again. They kept insisting that they were a genuine company and that I would get service after registration.

The scam didn't hurt me as much as the emotional abuse and verbal attack. I got a call from Maya who said she was from Honda. Later she denied ever saying Honda; she said she would only return my money if she had said Honda company. Then I got a call from Neha Verma who said to me that I will face karma for getting angry at them. Then Maya asked me to send documents and pictures to her WhatsApp. I denied and she yelled at me about why I had lied to her. What did I lie about? If you have received the package; if you have got the package then send the pictures. I said I don't want my money back, keep it.

Yesterday they relentlessly called me once again. Neha Verma said I am ready to return your money on PayTM but you have destroyed your card and sent me a picture on WhatsApp. I folded it and sent it to her. Then I got a call from Shweta Tiwaari who downright abused me that I need to learn conversational manners, and do I want my money back or not, if yes then do what they say.I kept insisting I knew they were frauds and I did not want my money back but they were harassing me mentally. I could not believe their audacity and confidence. They have extorted my money fraudulently. On top of that, they are psychologically harassing me "Why are you being so hopeless? Why are you being so negative? You have set in your mind that it is fraud so you're not listening to me."

I told her my father is undergoing cancer treatment and we need every single rupee right now, I genuinely believed they were from Honda. She said that she also had a family she understood my emotions and will return my money. The next day they were harassing me in a group.

I think it was the last time I believed in humanity. I have blocked their numbers. Hope they don't misuse my database. I watched tons of scammer videos on YouTube today to educate myself on their tactics.

I finally realized that they will not refund my money and this promise is another scam. They will probably send fake money and then harass me more. So I blocked them.

Here's what BHPian ashis89 had to say on the matter:

Several members, including me, have received such calls and shared them on different threads. I must have received such a call twice or thrice in the past 2 years. The price was 3500 for 15 yr (!) RSA contract. Hearing this deal, I simply disconnected the call each time without any further interaction.

Found these two threads on such scams:

  1. Thread 1
  2. Thread 2

Here's what BHPian lsjey had to say on the matter:

Sorry that you got scammed. You did well in blocking their numbers. Please move forward and enjoy your car.

I too have received multiple calls from such RSA scammers. A lot of new timeshare tourism guys also call. These guys buy our data from unscrupulous dealers and employees of insurance companies.

Here is how I deal with them:

  1. I pick up the phone and say only "Hellloooo" in a sing-song voice. Then wait for their response.
  2. When they start talking, I pick out if they are from a local call centre or not and choose Tamil if they are not local and Hindi if they are from TN. The point is to act like an uneducated villager and that they have got the wrong number.
  3. If they ask me if I'm so and so and all, I only act confused and don't respond. If the caller is genuine, they will tell me their name and organization and why they are calling first.
  4. I do get brickbats for speaking in Hindi from local call centre guys, but I bear with them. The Tamil call centre guys will immediately switch to English when I start responding in Hindi. I keep saying that I don't know any other language than Hindi.
  5. My personal experience has been that the number of calls gets drastically reduced based on this strategy.

These cold-calling fraudsters are becoming more and more sophisticated. But they have a big Achilles heel. That being their recruits are fluent only in their mother tongue. They mostly do not have skills in either English or other vernacular languages of India. We need to utilize the diversity of our country to our advantage.

Here's what BHPian vredesbyrd had to say on the matter:

  1. Always cross-verify/avoid deals related to insurance, car warranty, car insurance, credit cards
  2. 90% of commercial dealings on WhatsApp are a scam (unless it's a restaurant)
  3. Always stick to dealerships and your insurance provider for RSA. These usually are the best sources
  4. Every company in India leaks data like a poorly maintained E39 leaking oil. Half the country already has your mobile number, credit card, address and car registry (so they have mine as well)
  5. The scammers you dealt with are of the opposite gender and they can simply call false harassment police will be ready to ruin your life without evidence so let it go

Here's what BHPian lonetraveller89 had to say on the matter:

Look buddy, they played you good and you fell for it. What’s done is done and you have emerged from this situation as a wiser man. It’s ok, it happens to the best of us. But don’t let that bring you down. And you should’ve chosen a better forum handle. Because the truthful answer to “scammed, now what?” is “nothing, let bygones be bygones and move on”. Just block these numbers or mark them as spam via TrueCaller and go take a long, spirited drive in your Honda to shrug this off.
