Tata Safari facelift: Pros & Cons after 1,500 kms of ownership

In love with the looks and the road presence the Safari offers. Coming from a low-slung sedan (Civic) it is such a good change to be in a vehicle which offers a commanding seating position.

BHPian Enigmatic recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

1500 KM Update!

Overall it has been a smooth journey so far. I haven't been able to drive the Safari much and it is mostly being used for daily office duties (approx. 10 kms in total). Listing down the positives and negatives so far:

Positives:

  • After Sales Service. I know it is shocking to read Tata ASS as being a positive point for the Safari (I too am surprised). However, credit where credit's due, the Tata ASS has been nothing short of ideal. Yes, there are minor issues (as highlighted by the respective owners on this thread) but what matters more to me is how these issues are handled by the ASS. For eg., the two most critical issues I was facing (which I had also mentioned in the thread above) were (i) a squeaking sound from the rear end; and (ii) front-connected DRL not working in sync on locking the car. I had highlighted these issues during the first service, post which I was informed that the same are resolved. While the squeaking sound was rectified, the front-connected DRL was still not working in sync. Subsequently, the squeaking sound from the rear end also reappeared and I was forced to write an email to the Tata ASS highlighting my disappointment. To my surprise, the Tata ASS took up this matter rather seriously and called people from the Tata Plant (from Pune) to check the issue and provide a solution. My car was called, thoroughly inspected and the issues were rectified. Subsequently, a home visit was also scheduled by the Tata ASS and a senior technician (who I must say was very motivated) was sent to examine whether the issues had reappeared. He once again examined the squeaking sound from the rear end and showed me the spring that holds the spare wheel that produces the squeaking sound (for which a replacement has also been ordered). Regarding the Front DRL not working in sync, he explained that this issue has been highlighted to Tata through TDC (Tata Development Centre (?)), and a software update is expected to rectify this. Overall, I am completely satisfied by the support provided by the Tata ASS.
  • Road Presence, Ride Quality and Drivability. In love with the looks and the road presence the Safari offers. Coming from a low-slung sedan (Civic) it is such a good change to be in a vehicle that offers a commanding seating position. The ride quality is also pretty good. Glides over the broken roads of Mumbai. Regarding the drivability, I am surprised as to how nimble the Safari is to drive in traffic. The steering is super smooth and makes handling the Safari a breeze.
  • ADAS and connected car features. While I haven't been able to use ADAS to its fullest, it is definitely a great feature to have. The auto emergency braking is a bit too intrusive at times (i.e. it suddenly brakes if the car in front brakes) and I am tempted to switch it off however I would rather change my driving habits than repent switching off a safety feature. Also, the 360 cameras are the best in the category. They switch on when required and do a great job in traffic situations. The connected car features too are useful and helped me in tracking how the car was being driven while it was at the service center.
  • Lights. Presently surprised by the headlights on offer. While they are definitely not the brightest, they do a very good job of lighting up the streets. The auto headlights work very well and switch on/off as intended. An interesting thing I noticed was that while the headlights are a single LED projector unit, when you switch on high beam, the cut-off shield does not physically move to let more light out (like it does in other projectors) but a different set of LED's (inside the projector) light up to provide the high beam.
  • Ancillary items already highlighted before i.e. bone chiller of an AC, amazing sound system, etc. still hold good.

Negatives:

  • Fuel efficiency. While it is wrong for me to expect crazy FE numbers from a car of this size and weight, I am currently getting 6-7 KMPL in Mumbai traffic. Hoping that it improves after the first oil change which I understand will happen at 15,000 KM.
  • Gearbox. While I don't have any complaints regarding the smoothness of the automatic gearbox, the 1st gear is just too long. It shifts from 1st to 2nd at around 2000 RPM and around 21-22 KMPH while it shifts from 2nd to 3rd at 1500 RPM and around 30-32 KMPH. Can't understand why the first gear has to be this long. Also, on a couple of occasions, I have felt a strong jolt when the car downshifts from 3rd to 2nd gear. Hoping that this is not a serious issue.

Best,

Enigmatic

Loved the new Tata Safari but still finalised another Indian SUV

Once on the highway, it’s a smooth cruiser but not as smooth as the Mahindra XUV700.

BHPian sapien recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Did one final test drive of the latest Safari diesel AT before finalizing the only other Indian option in the segment.

Here are some quick observations

  • Looks properly big from the outside, in terms of appearance, can manage to be in the same league as Fortuner if not the Legender.
  • The interiors are a right balance of modern and timeless. Just the steering is overdone. Tatas are just getting better at interiors with each passing day. In terms of features, it’s super loaded, except for those ADAS lane functions which are likely to be enabled with a software update. Who would have thought cars would get OTA updates just a decade back?
  • The drive felt uninspiring, quite a lot of engine noise when at idle, on the move it’s mild but noticeable. The pick up is good but not great, if you’re incremental with the accelerator input, it has a nice linear pull. It kind of nudges you to sit back and relax.
  • Noise insulation is good, keep’s outside noises outside, other than that engine thrum. The vibrations are not much, but they are present in the background. Sound system is outstanding, probably the best in the segment.
  • Once on the highway, it’s a smooth cruiser, and the new steering is very well-tuned, sporty on the highway but lighter in the city. It’s not XUV700 smooth though.
  • Fuel efficiency is ~12 with a combination of city and highway driving, which is decent for such a huge vehicle! My petrol Tiago gives 14-15 on the same route.
  • In terms of ride, it feels like a king, you are sitting on something really large and goes over rough patches without worrying too much. For the same reason, it doesn’t feel nimble and requires effort to change directions, feels ungainly! The Jeep Compass is still a benchmark in the ride and handling department. The XUV700 falls right in between, neither too sporty [Compass] nor too plush [Hector].

I really had my heart set on this one, but the mind prevailed.

Paint peeling off the wheels of my Tata Harrier #JET edition

Initially, I thought it was a kerb rash however I noticed the same on all four wheels.

BHPian ike recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Bliss is a shiny car freshly clayed and waxed!

I have noticed paint peeling off from the alloys. Initially, I thought it was a kerb rash however I noticed the same on all four wheels. It seems that for the #JET edition, they probably put a layer of matte black paint over the existing alloys without sanding them first, which isn't holding. The surface where the paint has peeled is very smooth to the touch. A few pics below:

12,600 km in just 6 months with my Safari: Ownership updates

The indicated fuel efficiency is not that far off from the actual tankful-to-tankful method these days.

BHPian ike recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Another month and another couple of thousand KMS. The car is performing OK and is at 12600 KMS in about six months. Yet another roundtrip to Chennai from Thrissur in Nov. I enjoy driving the car, and the convenience of an automatic is just awesome, especially in the city.

Onwards stats. I travelled on Sunday, the 19th of Nov. I patted myself on the back while starting early in the morning from home to reach Chennai in time to watch the World Cup finals. A lot of other people too had the same plans and I encountered significant traffic till Salem. Turns out everyone's too clever by half these days.

A Tata without niggles is like masala dosa without the masala. I observed that sometimes one of the headlamps was turning off when in auto mode, mostly the one on the left. The first time I encountered it I switched the headlights off and then back to auto again and the issue cleared. This time that didn't work. I also tried switching the headlights to "ON" from "AUTO" and still only one headlamp was working. Restarting the car(switching the engine off and then back on) fixed it. I took pictures of it, hopefully this can be addressed during the first service that will be due soon. The other interesting aspect is that both instances of the left headlamp turning on happened in similar conditions, once at dawn and then at dusk.

The return stats. Drove out of Chennai as there were heavy rains predicted for the first week of Dec. Was bogged down by heavy rain for the first hundred km and took it easy after capping my speed at 90 km/h. The result was my best-ever FE so far. The other noticeable thing is that the MID seems to have learned how to do its job and the indicated FE is not that far off from the actual tankful-to-tankful method these days.

My Tata Safari involved in near-miss accident a day post 3rd service

Next Day enroute to meet a few Friends what seemed to be a peaceful day turned out to be a proof of What all Things could have gone wrong but didn't

BHPian iskandariya recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Third Service & Near Miss Accident Update

Third Service

My 3rd Service was due in Nov'23, but my dealer had billed my vehicle internally in Oct'22 itself hence I started receiving pesky calls about service from all nearby Dealers.

I ODO reading was less, plus my replacement parts were still awaited and hence went for Service in Jan'24

Since there was no issue of Left Right Pull or so in my vehicle I said no to Wheel Alignment and rotation and, the rest all standard stuff of 3rd Service.

Windscreen Washer Fluid I always refuse (even if it is INR40)

DEF I again refused, it is way cheaper outside at Indian Oil Pump.

Entered Service station at 12 PM exited at 7:30 PM

  • 12:25 PM - Job Card Created - which also showcased a BCM update R19 is the latest I think
  • 2:45 PM - Bay Assigned
  • 03:00 PM - 3rd Service work started

Additionally, I inquired about replacement parts, They are still nowhere to be seen. Part No. Mismatch for Driver Side Seat. This time again they took out the seat made its video and then seemingly tried to show as if they were trying to get something done and action would be seen on this soon - to which I have little hope. The best part is every time I come new Service Incharge engineer is assigned who needs to listen to the whole story again, then next person comes to whom I have to explain again, and then his manager who wants to listen to me the complete scenario again.

I also pointed out that since 1st Service 1 Clip of the fender flare is not properly installed which I had highlighted earlier also and it was not done. Same was the case for Door Buffer rubbers which are conical in shape. --> Both items were not attended too.

While I was at service there was one Safari Top Model 2023 Model which had a Head Unit issue for which its Silverbox and screen were removed. I did not like the no Touch button layout of the phygital Buttons. The Dash looks Bland , and lacks character, could be that I am old school and newer generations like this look.

I finally got the vehicle by around 07:30 PM with 10k invoice

Near Miss Accident

What I like about my Tata Safari XZA + after 4000 km of ownership

I had also become apprehensive about my liking towards the car but I feel now it was only a matter of adapting, coming from super smooth Hyundai Verna petrol.

BHPian Rodie09 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hey Friends,

Have been wanting to write a proper ownership review of my Safari XZA+ Adventure in Orcus white. However, just not getting the bandwidth to do that. In my earlier posts, I did mention some initial issues I felt (not niggles) around the stiffer ride, steering left pull, and a couple of software bugs. I had also become apprehensive about my liking towards the car but I feel now it was only a matter of adapting, coming from super smooth Hyundai Verna petrol.

But Safari has so many things that I am in love with:

  • Amazing Street presence and looks - Adventure edition with blackened trims takes it to another level. Still an eye turner I'd say.
  • Lots of torque and power at the tap - never feels underpowered even in City mode
  • Nice interiors and features
  • Huge panoramic sunroof
  • Superb ICE setup
  • Space management except for the boot
  • 2nd and 3rd row seats with stadium seating. The family just loves it
  • Ventilated seats - my favorite and 'always on' no matter what the weather is like

Dislikes - Few. But I'll keep them for another day.

In summary, the beast is growing on me and I now look out at every opportunity to take it out on the roads. Gotten used to all its quirks - there are not many. And boy o boy, it's a hoot to drive on the open roads and highways. Solidly planted and I actually love the feedback from the Hydraulic steering.

Yes, I am in love with the car, and no major issues so far, not many niggles either. Experience has been smooth for the last 4 months. And I do turn back at her every time I park her in the parking:

I'll write more someday in detail, but for now to mark my 4k km with this beauty, here is a casual pic from this morning

PS: There are no tints on glasses although it appears so in pics.
